Simpson will keep roster spots open for Nino, Diaz or Sbisa. All three are down in their series.

Any of the three would be a welcomed addition.

Bodenmann left yesterday's practice with a wrist injury. Doesn't seem too bad, but I guess he will rest tonight.

Sbisa seems pretty weak this year. But with the defense we have this year, it could be a good addition. Of course, Diaz would be way better.

We're all aware of Sbisa's limits, but with the way Ramholt and Grossmann have played during the exhibition games, I'd definitely take him. At worst he can be a more reliable option for the fourth pair, at best he can jump into the top 4 and allow Simpson to give sheltered minutes to Kukan or Schlumpf.

In this case I'm not sure why Fiala was called rather than Pestoni, he clearly looked out of place against Germany.

Anyway, things could be worse. Bodenmann is probably the only top 9 forward we could afford to lose.

This could be the year of the Swiss. A lot of the other top countries Russia/Sweden/Finland/Canada have on paper much weaker teams than in years. And Switzerland has been very good on international stage for years now this could be the time. No offence to the swiss but because the other top countries are weaker this year due to olympics and so forth you guys might not have this good chance for gold in a while. Time to strike!

Don't think the swiss squad send one of his best team. It's the same problem for Switzerland. The swiss defense looks quite weak. But we ll see what they can do. The last year was our year despite the loss in final.

That was true 4 years ago. This year, regretfully ... we are like all others. Many players did not participate ... and the coaches have officially complained about that.

Nonetheless i'll keep your last sentence : time to strike !

Since Berra joined, I actually like this year's team better than 2010's. The 2010 team had 7 defensemen including Helbling and Bezina, Ambühl and Monnet on the top line, and two lines (Lemm-Romy-Savary and Jenni-Trachsler-Duca, keep in mind that we're not talking about 2012 Romy and 1998 Jenni here) at least as questionnable as the current fourth line.

As I said already, this team is only two defensmen and an experienced fourth liner away from last year's team.

Some thought about tonights game:

In general:

In the first two periods nobody attacked the puck carrier. They were all just floating around and I´ve got the feeling that they tried to adjust to a very complex system. It got better in the third.

Everybody who got the puck in the offensive zone tried to carry it into the net. I´ve seen dozens of toe-drags where there would have been the opportunity for a direct shot.

On a few players:

:eek::eek::eek:i: Some horrible turnovers and just plain bad defensive play just before the first goal. He should have intercepted that pass. On the plus side he seemed to be the only swiss forward to be able to gain the offensive zone while holding on to the puck.

Fiala: The best forward today and the only one who created chances. His hockey sense is incredible, he´s strong on the puck and his speed allowed him to back-check. I´d put him on the Ambühl line since I saw a little bit of chemistry there.

Brunner: Did he ever even shoot the puck? All I saw was that he tried to carry it into the net and never even got past the first defender. He played the same lazy, ineffective play as he did at the Olympics.

Froidveaux: Brought energy on every shift he was out there. He fought for his spot on the fourth line and did most of the things he was supposed to do.

Stancescu: Secured his place on the fourth line. Strong in the corner, very solid defensively. In general I thought that the fourth line was the best line out there tonight.

Schäppi: Didn´t notice him much besides some chances he created by getting the puck into the slot. His line looked very good.

Rüfenacht: He´s supposed to play physical and that is exactly what he did. His check on MacKinnon was just something to enjoy! But he can´t continue taking stupid penaltys, that always costs the team.

Moser: Did not notice him much except for the stupid penalty.

Plüss: Did not play well at the start of the game, he lost many pucks. Then he somehow disappeared from my view?

Ambühl and Suri: Some good work in the offensive zone, nothing else mentionable.

Seger: Probably his worst game for the national team. Too late on the first goal, too inconsequent on the second. Today he was just too slow and gave away too many puck, especially on the PP.

Kukan: Made some good passes. But he got schooled time after time by the canadian forwards.

Josi: His usual strong play

Schlumpf: Did not look too bad at Josi´s side, but who wouldn´t?

Weber: The only defenseman besides Josi I have any confidence in. Always looked very calm and in control

Berra: Neither one of the goals was his mistake but if he would have been in shape he could have stopped one or two. I noticed that his rebound control got better.

Well, i wasn't impressed about tonight's game !!

A couple of bright spots described by Richi, Fiala is amazing ! He is smart in all he does. and in most of the situations, he outsmarts the others.
The articulation of the team is non-existent.
How many times they didn't understand each-other ? that was unreal.
Awful turnovers. maybe time to go for Simpson.

Probably better to have bad games before then during the WM.

Ahhh ! big source of worry ... are we again in a scoring desert ?

++

Compared to 4 years ago ... 1 person really changed ... and that is Simpson. 4 years ago he was in position of power. having achieved with Zurich the Euro-cup, he was in full confidence and the team was powering at 300 km/h.
Now i see a team that is almost a bit frustrated. He complains instead of valuing who is with him. His mind set has changed.

That pathetic game killed the optimism I had slowly rebuilt since Friday. I'm not sure how a team so well organised one year ago can look so confused now. I mean, look at the first goal: :eek::eek::eek:i (what a terrible game he had) and Hollenstein both skating the wrong way, Blum standing near the board and Seger not realising he had to backcheck.

I know we weren't too optimistic last year either, but back then they managed to score more than one goal over the last 3 exhibition games, and none of them was played against a jetlagged team a few days removed from meeting for the first time.

I guess we won't ruin Victory Day.

Kamerzin last scratch.

I think Froidevaux and Plüss might not getting registered for the first game.

Froidevaux and Plüss (I just can't understand why he was picked over Pestoni, or even Monnet) won't be dressed for sure, that's pretty obvious from yesterday's lineup, but I wonder if Simpson might chose to start the tournament with less than 8 defensemen, depending on how the Rangers' serie goes. There's a chance they will be out on Friday already.

And Berra vs. USA, probably the right decision. There is more to win vs. the US boys.

Probable Line-up according to sda:

Simon Moser - Kevin Romy - Damien Brunner
Sven Bärtschi - Luca :eek::eek::eek:i - Denis Hollenstein,
Reto Suri - Andres Ambühl - Kevin Fiala
Victor Stancescu - Reto Schäppi - ??? (Plüss/Froidveaux/Rüfenacht)

Mathias Seger - Yannick Weber
Roman Josi - Dominik Schlumpf
Robin Grossmann - Eric Blum

Dean Kukan and Tim Ramholt might be scratched.
Up to four licences (I guess 3 and we dress a 13th forward) might be kept open for the starting game (for Diaz/Sbisa/Niederreiter and possible injury replacement)
