Who is the more popular commentator in Finland: Antero Mertaranta or Saukkonen?

Somehow Mertaranta was funny to listen for no speaking and understanding Finnish listener.

Mertaranta by far.

Saukkonen is hated. I myself hate him. He is wrong so many times during games...how that is even possible. He never knows who gets penalty and why until it says on screen. When its offside or not.. etc..

Mertaranta. Saukkonen is worst commentator I have heard. Mertaranta aint good also, but he is still better than Saukkonen. But must give props that Saukkonen tries his best and shows his feelings.

And he can't pronounce the names of any foreign players. Not even Swedish or English names.

Saukkonen is just bad. But I don't hate him, he gives he's best effort for he's job and it's all we can ask for him.. It's up to MTV to get better guys there, they always throw him to the wolves* but at least he has been clearly doing the job as well as he can..

*(if you're commenting Finnish national team games, its pressure situation, when usually over 50% of the nation watches the game easily. Saturday it was 1,7 million viewers and that doesn't count the restaurants ect, so its around 3 million I bet)

MTV3 owns the tv rights of the tournament. They have two channels, one free with ads and one premium channel. Saukkonen does most of the commentating on the free channel and his role is to be so bad and unpopular that people buy the premium channel where Mertaranta announces.

 Funny as its true. They could easily put the same announcer to both signals.. they even pay saukkonen to make it worse.

Looks like they consider our guys making the final special enough, as per the MTV site, they'll put Mertaranta on air even on the free channel.

It's one thing to try milk buyers for your pay TV solution but a completely another one to screw your (ad-)watchers when the team actually makes it to the finals. Skoda Cup in May is a national institution and MTV3 has to step carefully after already having turned it to their profit-churner.

I laughed yesterday though when they told that "On MTV3 we go now to the commercials but on Max Sport we'll look what social media has to say." Perhaps not your best pay customer milking strategy.

How come Jori Lehterä isn't in the NHL? Guy was drafted in 2008, played 7 AHL matches and then never came over again. Looked at his stats and his 0.86ppg both in Liiga and KHL. Solid numbers. Add his size 6'2 and 212 lbs to that and it sounds like an NHLer to me. What's stopping him? Does he just not want to play overseas or what has been the problem here? Is there any chance he comes over next year?

More money and top3 center in KHL versus less money and twoway contract with blues wheres possibility his a depth guy.

Outstanding effort from the team and they can be very proud of the silver. Gold medal was possible but referees didnt want that.

swedish commentator said that finland is the country that have most final losses. true or false?

anyways, sweden is probaly the second.

This team massively exceeded expectations and played well above their abilities. Very happy with the result, and I think we might have some new NT regulars out of this. Ohtamaa, Palola, Jormakka and Pakarinen seem to be able to perform at this level at least, so they should be good options for the future especially when they can play in a comfortable role.

Overall I'm very happy about this tournament. I still think more skill players and a couple of AHL defenders would've made the team better, but this is a tremendous result nonetheless.

The team certainly exceeded all expectations. Congratulations for the medal and great effort.

Of course a few bounces going the other way could have won us the game, but I think this did in the end come to lack of high end finishing skill. The lack of skill also cost us some penalties throughout the tournament. Still, amazing for all the first-timers to go this far.

Still feels like **** though.I hated losing to Russia, starting with the whole Belarus setup and everything that is going on in the world, outside of hockey. I'll just leave it at that.

Well the russians sure seems happy, now I can take the loss better. Im happy that Russia has come a step towards playing a more teambiased game. Znarok doesnt seem like the typical russian coach. He shows happieness :E

Well deserved russia! We are the Lions, we will be back!

Great achievement from our D-level guys. We didn't play great hockey at any point but Rinne got us past Canada and Czechs.

More young guys and skill players next year, please :)

I wouldnt give a **** if we lost10-0 but when the whole game was pure ******** and we played ****ing great and got ****ed by judges i cant ****ing stand this ****.

Sweden has 19 world championship silver medals
Finland has 7
get new commentators.
I suggest you take a long hard gander at the tournament format pre-1990s.

Most of Swedish silver is from that era. No playoffs, no finals - just simple group stage play and the one with most points is the champion.

The Swedish commentators were right. Get new history books.

EDIT: Since 1991, Finland has 7 final losses (1992, 1994, 1998 1999, 2001, 2007, 2014). Sweden has 6 (1993, 1995, 1997, 2003, 2004, 2011). Canada has 4 (1996, 2005, 2008, 2009). Russia has two (2002, 2010) and Czech Republic 1 (2006). The rest of the countries have obviously not been in the finals enough times for this stat to matter.

Congrats to Finland about Bronze. It was a great effort after a disappointing round robin play.

I would also like to mention Jori Lehterä here. He is a special player and clearly the best Finnish player outside the NHL. This guy is a true superstar in the KHL. I have watched him play a lot of KHL games and he can occasionally take over a game there.

Now Lehterä managed to translate his KHL success to international level. He was the best center in this tournament, far above any NHL player.
