For fun i used capgeek

Link for my roster: http://www.capgeek.com/armchair-gm/roster/12762

for FA's i decided to stick with their current salary per capgeek.
some interesting notes here, surprised this team actually fits under the cap, crazy amount of bonuses.

why would you be surprised? that's what happens when you take so many rookies and players still on ELC. This team runs the risk of getting lit up and laughed out of the tournament if the coaching staff can't come up with an effective game plan and get this this group to buy in... But for what its worth, I'm always a pessimist.

Read between the lines, dude. Giroux got screwed over. Now HC can go **** themselves. Flyers are taking the heat for him.

I think Giroux screwed himself over. but that's besides the point. Snider is still throwing hissy fits pissed at S.Y. for not picking his guy...all the while complaining about the NHL in the Olympics to begin with. It's great theatrics.

How dare giroux finish 3rd in pts and elicit a hart trophy nomination while putting his team on his back leading them to the playoffs. How dare he skip team canada camp because he had to rehab an injury that clearly affected his play the first month of the season.

Oh come on...he couldn't get on a flight b/c he had a sore finger. The fact of the matter is, missing camp with a lame excuse, a god awful start...he didn't do himself any favors. He never got screwed out of anything. I was hoping he would be on the team despite the poor start..but as it turns out, he wasn't needed nor was he missed.

he severed a tendon that originates at the wrist and is quite crucial to grip strength. He was getting treatment twice a day by team physicians who felt he would be served best by continuing his treatment in the area. By the time the teams were selected only a handful of team canada's players had more points.

Ya I'm still skeptical as to the severity of that boo boo... but whatever. I hope HC and Giroux can kiss and make up by the time the World Cup rolls around.

Your skepticism is coming across as an agenda, and it is unwarranted especially after the publicity and notoriety the injury received.

Flyers’ general manager Paul Holmgren released the following statement on the team’s website:
“Philadelphia Flyers captain Claude Giroux had successful surgery this afternoon on his right index finger performed by Dr. Katherine Boyd at the Ottawa Civic Hospital in Ottawa, Canada. Giroux was golfing today when his golf club shattered and splintered into his index finger. Although there were no broken bones, there was some damage to his extensor tendons in his finger. He is expected to have a full recovery in 5-6 weeks.â€

As a fierce critic of HC and supporter of the players 99.9999% of the time, the suggestion I have an agenda is laughable. The fact of the matter, Giroux wasn't screwed out of anything. I hope he is on the World Cup team if the World Cup happens...but if he isn't, or doesn't want, he can be easily replaced. No biggie.

He was screwed.

Oh yeah I'm sure it was totally merit based when HC chose St Louis over Giroux for a replacement spot. That didn't have anything to do with a star player feeling slighted and asking for a trade from his NHL GM. That was totally fair. How dare Giroux be mad about that.

No, he shouldn't be upset. St Louis was a unanimous choice as Stamkos's replacement (according to Babcock) - the entire management team and the coaching staff (who had one vote combined) voted for him. I preferred Giroux, but I don't think politics played any part in him being left off.

The man is a top 5 forward in the NHL. He can play the wing and centre. He plays the PK and is arguably the best PP quarterback in the entire world. If you don't think politics had anything to do with it then you clearly don't know how Hockey Canada works. It starts from the age 4 when kids are in tyke to the professional level. Politics are in hockey and quite evident in the Canadian hockey development system and its made it's way all the way to the top.

I don't think anybody would argue that fact... what I'm arguing is the suggestion he was screwed out of something. The only way to buy that is if you buy in to the notion that he was entitled to a roster spot. And he was most certainly not entitled to jack****. nor is any other Canadian forward. The should be no sense of entitlement among any Canadian player vying for a roster spot. He was passed over...he can line up behind some other Canadian greats (Hall of Famers) who were also not selected for various additions of Team Canada.

I wanted Giroux on the team at the time, and I still think he would have been a valuable addition. Still, there is no reason to think that HC made a decision just to screw over Giroux. Team Canada always cuts great players. Steve Yzerman himself was cut from the 1991 Canada Cup team despite just having finished 7th in NHL scoring, after two seasons of finishing third (including a year with 155 points when he finished only behind Gretzky and Lemieux). You could make the case that Yzerman was "screwed" over in 1987 a well. Canada has harder decisions to make than any other country by far. There is no evidence to suggest that it was a decision made just to slight Giroux in any way.

How can you say Giroux got screwed when Canada won gold? They clearly picked the right players.

Hence Giroux got screwed. They most likely would of won gold with him anyways. And yeah he did deserve a spot. You could leave Crosby off the team and they still could win gold. They won without Stamkos or Tavares as well.

The start of the season is why Giroux was passed over. 0 goals, 7 assists, and -11 in his first 15 games. He came out of the gate so utterly flat and bad you can hardly blame team canada for 'screwing him' because he was pure awful at that time.

GUYS

We need to STOP talking about Giroux and his Olympic omission...start a new thread if you want, but this is WHC 2014 and we are here to talk about the current situation

Entitled? The man has EARNED his status because he is a big game, elite talent. He leads the NHL in scoring over the last 4 years and after a rough 15 game start you negate that fact? Are you kidding me? IMO thats like team USA declining Patrick Kane because he had an awful start to a season. Claude Giroux was not apart of the Olympic roster because of politics, plain and simple. The moment you grasp the concept of politic's in sports is the moment you realize Giroux was snubbed. At the end of the day i'd love to see Giroux at the Worlds but Hockey Canada is one of the most arrogant, self entitled organizations on this planet and it looks good on them seeing a top player in the world throw it back in their face after the ******** they pulled with Sochi

While Giroux is an amazing player, it's not really screwing him over when he wasn't selected to TC in Sochi. My opinion of course.

Notice all those complaining are Flyers fans.

After that ridiculous rant I'm done arguing the point. And it was more like 30 games and well into the 2nd week of December before he got his ass going, just a few weeks before the team was announced. He ran out of time. The right choice was made... next time in an Olympic year, stay off the golf course.

Pretty excited to see Monahan play at a higher level, felt bad for him after Calgary didn't let him go to the World Juniors. I wonder if his speed will hold him back on the big ice surface.
