Please stay on topic, this thread is about the Team Canada WC roster. If you still want to discuss the Olympic roster, you can dig out the appropriate thread.

Thanks.

Pretty excited to see Monahan play at a higher level, felt bad for him after Calgary didn't let him go to the World Juniors. I wonder if his speed will hold him back on the big ice surface.

I'm not too worried. He's likely going to have a more defensive role. Too bad to hear Gio declined his invite. Would have loved to see him go.

If Colorado was not in a playoff position I would have picked MacKinnon. I would also have included O'Reilly and Duchene. I think that Duchene would play in the WC if healthy. Among other Canadian Olympians, I would guess that Benn and Subban would go if the option presents itself. I put Weber on the team but I am very confident he will not go given the Olympics and also the weird situation last year.
the WHC is for 20 and over meaning Mackinnon would not be able to play in this event since he is only going to be turning 19

Waaaaaa what you saying??

Remember when Murray played before his draft...he was 18 i think...

I think what you are saying is wrong

Really, that's a stupid rule. Mackinnon would instantly be the best forward on team Canada by quite a margin.

No such rule exists. Canada has had numerous players under the age of 20 at this tournament... including Monahan this year. As long as a player has the right paperwork they could even be 16 and play.

The Sedins played in the World Championships before they were even drafted, so unless there's been a rule change MacKinnon should be eligible.

Patrice Bergeron won a WC Gold at 18, BEFORE he won WJC Gold for our 2005 Junior Dream Team

Plenty of 18 year olds have played WC's, probably some 17 year olds too. How old was Kopitar when he first suited up for Slovenia?

Ok, we'll just chalk that up to a rookie mistake. Sidney Crosby played as an 18 year old in 06 and was the leading scorer and won best forward award. The only age restrictions for IIHF tournaments are the underage junior tournaments, U18 and U20. As for senior men, there is no such restriction.

Not true, there are age restrictions regarding the seniors' championship as well. Each player must be at least 18 years of age on the day the respective championship starts, or be at least 16 and obtain an under age waiver.

Yes, that's the rule.. but since all you have to do is obtain a waiver to allow an underage player at least 16 years of age, then I'd say that equates to no age restriction imo... but that is all semantics.

We knew Schenn already. Read seemed like was just confirmed today

Well those additions are surprising. Too bad about Perron as well. TSN is also saying that they took Sam Reinhart along to Europe as well for the training cam and exhibition game. I am glad that at least MacKinnon is there, as he has a good shot at contributing to a full team in the future.

An 18yo is the best player on the roster. This should be interesting.

It's a very good move by MacKinnon to start his campaign for a 2018 Olympic spot. If he has a big tourney, his star will shine very bright in the faces of the Hockey Canada. You have to start from the bottom and work your way up, this is definitely a big opportunity for him.

With a strong tourney, he should leapfrog a host of others that either couldn't make this tourney or chose not to go. Like it or not, there are politics involved in team selection so it's on the player to do everything in their power to tilt it in their favor. The combination of his talent and the desire to play the good soldier should move him up the ranks of candidates.

certain players if they have the skill level to play with players older are allowed to play at 18 Mackinnon was invited just now as a injury replacement
