I said he was the guy Fenton was going to take.

AZ didn't jump 3 spots in the draft for nothing. Philly wasn't going to take him, otherwise they wouldn't have made the trade. FLA was taking the goalie was almost a given. That leaves MN as the only real reason to move up like that in the draft.

It’s possible the plan was never to take him, but to throw other teams off of who we were really going to take.

Arizona trading up really isn’t enough to convince me that the Wild planned to take him. And frankly I wouldn’t rule out Philadelphia either.

I agree the Wild are and where so devoid of high end forwards, I don't think there is a scenario where they take him over Boldly. Fenton might have been a dink but it seems he does a good job drafting, 2018 first pick aside.

Bruins fan, watching BC and UNH and Boldy has been the best player on the ice. 0-0 game in third but he has been the most noticeable player and definitely has a pro friendly game that will translate and play better with pro players.
He's looked good and came close on a shot that the UNH goalie bobbled. He can stand to get stronger on the puck, but that'll probably come with time.

McBain's looked pretty good too. Doesn't have near the hands that Boldy does, but they're not bad and he uses his size well.

Fenton got "his guy" for a high end FWD in trade. Picked up a red hot Donato to end the season. Has Kaprizov coming in a year. Not to mention JEE, Greenway, and Kunin as young FWDs.

It's not like he was bending over backwards to re-sign Spurgeon, or even seemed to have him in his long term plans for the team. He was NSH guy with a build from the d-corps out mindset. Loved his Swedes. Reached for a RD the draft before and saw rotten results from that pick in D+1 season. Nope, no reason at all to think he would have taken Soderstrom if he was still available when his pick was there.

I 'm not talking about his trades, they all look bad. However both his drafts are trending upwards, outside the Johansson pick. Although he is trading up as well. He also had Leipold sitting next to him during the first round. My guess it was a forward regardless which D was on the board.

An owner sitting next to the GM in the first round is common. They all walk up the the stage together, do the handshake line, and picture with whoever is picked after it is announced.

The owner doesn't seem to much of anything about scouting and drafting. He's been fine trading away picks (at the time of the trade), and has been near the bottom of the league in the amount of scouts on staff.

Didn't Russo report he was sitting in on the pre-draft meetings/discussions, which hadn't happened much prior?
Sitting in on and influencing are two different things. He's been interviewed on draft day many times saying he's just there to observe and take everything in and enjoy it.

I would agree but this offseason was different. I thought Russo said that Leipold sitting next to the GM during the draft was unusual. The team received a lot of shit for the Johansson pick and the media, most notably Russo, gave him him all kind of grief for his hockey trades.

I'm not suggesting that Leipold is a Jerry Jones type owner, but if you owned the hockey team wouldn't you want to some say in the direction of the club, draft, farm system. And if you thought that the person who was representing you, in this case Fenton, wasn't up to the job wouldn't you influence him.

CL admits he doesn't know anything about incoming players. I have always seen him sitting next to the GM even back in the Fletcher days. I would be SHOCKED if he tried to influence at all.

He has always let the hockey people make the hockey decisions. He isn't this interfering owner people try to paint him as.

Again I would agree, and again this was a strange offseason were I think the normal Leipold decided to be more active. My original thought/point was that there was no way Fenton/Leipold were taking a defense this draft when the club was so devoid of offense.

I think Florida really wanted soderstrom, actually.

Thanks for the reassurance. His production has been worrisome

He looked very good with the puck and gets a fair amount on net, but as a whole that line didn't seem to get much going offensively. I thought Newhook looked a little better, though.

The whole game was kind of a slog all around.

I’m loving picks like beckman, Firstov, khovanov, etc. right now. I don’t know that they all become top 6 guys, but I feel that they can add skill to the bottom 6 that we’ve really never had before

McBain's also looked like a guy that could fit in well in the bottom-6 someday. He's not quite Greenway, but he seems to have a similar ability to use his size and reach to take pucks and make a nice pass.

Did he move back to wing this game?

Well, that is just not correct.
