im one of Larssons biggest fans, but id keep Schneider before him

If the majority weren't on board with Larsson for Yak, it would be even slimmer for the Schneider for him.

I get that... but having a pending UFA (in 2 years), at a position that seems relatively easy to replace according to our board last year, it wouldn't be all that bad IMO.

I'm not hating on Schneider at all. In fact, I think he's our best asset but everyone seemed to think that landing a netminder was the easiest of things cause there's so many quality goalkeepers around the league and there's only 30 starting jobs.

I just think we'll have to face reality head on and live with the fact that we'll need to rebuild sooner rather then later and with the performances we've been putting up, I just don't see why Schneider would choose to stay here when he'll have all the options in the world in 18 months from now.

God knows how great our odds are of keeping our own stud pending UFA's :help:

I'm not really worried about him re-signing. Marty will be gone by then and the job will be unquestionably his.

The job is his in about 2 months IMO, that's not the problem. The real question is, will Schneider choose to stay on a "rebuilding" team or decide to go somewhere else, where he won't have to wait several years before playing on contending team.

If I were Schneider, I don't see why I'd stay in Jersey in all honesty. The future doesn't look all that bright and the present is a dark hole that just keeps getting darker and darker by the second.

the outlook of the team could be completely different 18 months from now.

the last thing I am worried about right now is Schneider re-signing. and I think Lou will get it done early, aka next summer.

Again, Lou doesn't hold any leverage when trying to sign our pending UFA's. The player hitting the market holds all the cards and if that player doesn't want to ink his name on the piece of paper Lou will throw his way, there's nothing management can do really but hope that the player they're trying to lock down will eventually agree.

I've seen too many elite pending UFA's skip on us to not be worried. If we were playing solid hockey, I wouldn't be as worried but like I said, with a aging roster and minimal depth in our pipeline to pick up the slack, I'm having a hard time seeing why a up and coming netminder would choose to stay here when the future doesn't look all that bright.

Never in a million years did I think we'd stink this bad but after watching all of our games so far, it just looks like we're playing in quick sand.

if we continue to suck we will sell off a lot of pieces at the deadline for picks and be able to stock up.

again, the last thing I'm worried about is Schneider leaving. thats a long time away to even think about.

How many contending teams even need a goalie and are willing to pay for one? It's not like he's going to Boston, Chicago, LA or Detroit.

Maybe Pittsburgh but I don't think they'll continue to hold their nose and play Fleury the next 18 months waiting for Cory before he becomes a FA. Especially with Lundqvist going FA this offseason.

I really really hope if we suck we turn Jagr into a 1st round pick. Would be so huge to get a 1st rounder even if it's pick 25+. Would soften the blow of not having a pick a little.

Getting two picks in the top 35 would be great :sarcasm:

If there are only 30 starting jobs and a big supply of goaltenders that can start and we can offer one of those starting jobs to Schneider in two years along with a reasonable contract, why would he leave?

I predict when Clowe is ready, Gionta will be waived. They're not gonna keep Clowe out of the lineup after those two games if he ready to go, just because they don't wanna waive somebody.

Especially if Gionta goes 8 games without a point.

Any chance Lou will try to extend the forfeit? Seems more plausible than getting it completely revoked. Le sigh.

Let's play a fun game. Using callups, re-signings, and UFA signings, make your ideal lineup for NEXT YEAR'S team. Let's pretend the cap goes up to 68 mil.

Add:
Tomas Vanek- UFA- 7 years at a 6.5 mil cap hit. He's making 6.4 in actual salary now. Front load a 7 year deal from 8.5 mil to 4.5.
Anton Khudobin- UFA- 2 years at 2.5 per. Skilled #2 goalie same age as Schneider.

Re-Sign:
Adam Larsson- 2 years 1.5 per
Eric Gelinas- 2 years 850k per
Andrei Loktionov- 2 years 1.2 per
Jacob Josefson- 2 years 900k per
Mattias Tedenby- 1 year 850k (Traded or demoted)
Mark Fayne- 1 year 1.75
Steve Bernier- 1 year 1.00
Ryan Carter- 1 year 800k

Subtract:
Anton Volchenkov: Compliance Buyout
Martin Brodeur: Retire
Marek Zidlicky: UFA
Jaromir Jagr: UFA
Rastislav Olesz: UFA
Stephen Gionta: UFA (Unless re-signed for Albany)
Rod Pelley: UFA (Maybe re-signed for Albany)
Cam Janssen: UFA (Maybe re-signed for Albany)

FORWARDS
Thomas Vanek ($6.500m) / Travis Zajac ($5.750m) / Michael Ryder ($3.500m)
Patrik Elias ($5.500m) / Adam Henrique ($4.000m) / Damien Brunner ($2.500m)
Ryane Clowe ($4.850m) / Andrei Loktionov ($1.200m) / Dainius Zubrus ($3.100m)
Ryan Carter ($0.800m) / Jacob Josefson ($0.900m) / Steve Bernier ($1.000m)
Reid Boucher ($0.925m) / Stefan Matteau ($0.925m) /

DEFENSEMEN
Andy Greene ($3.000m) / Adam Larsson ($1.500m)
Bryce Salvador ($3.167m) / Jon Merrill ($0.900m)
Eric Gelinas ($0.875m) / Mark Fayne ($1.750m)
Peter Harrold ($0.800m) /

GOALTENDERS
Cory Schneider ($4.000m)
Anton Khudobin ($2.500m)

OTHER
Buyout: Trent Hunter ($0.667m)
Buyout: Anton Volchenkov ($0.000m)
------
SALARY CAP: $68,000,000; CAP PAYROLL: $60,858,334; BONUSES: $375,000
CAP SPACE (23-man roster): $7,516,666

I personally hope the new ownership tells Lou to go for it with an open checkbook and the Devils can land Vanek and Stastny. They ABSOLUTELY have to give Volchenkov a compliance buyout for any of this to work.

He would leave because the team would suck. If we're staying competitive, I doubt he leaves. If we suck, I doubt he stays.

They'll probably just blame Larsson and send him down.

I don't see any reason why the league would grant that. We had 4 years to forfeit the pick and Lou missed his chance when we made the finals.

But something tells me Lou will try to fight that ruling regardless. At least i hope so.
