Anyone been following Ryan Johnson’s season ?
I'm on 7 viewings IIRC - still a very good defender, would like to see more offensive output but he's about a .5 point/game player again this year.
Good to hear. I'm still very high on this player after his WJSS, WJC, and a couple of other viewings. He is going to be a very good player. But with Samuelsson's play it seems like there's going to be no way to fit him in on the left. I'm not a proponent of moving Dahlin to the right either as I don't think he plays as well there.
Either way, I think the priority should be to get him signed and have him play in the AHL next year. Run Dahlin/Samuelsson/Power on the left with Bryson filling in and let Johnson develop in the AHL. Re-assess the situation in 23-24.
Unless a trade partner values Johnson pretty highly and there could do a LHD/RHD swap.
Don't worry about it until he's actually ready - sign him and put him in Rochester and go from there. We have no idea what happens in the future, including injury to others.
Can’t see them being outside the top 5.He hasn't gotten to his ranking of the Sabres yet, but Wheeler is doing his reveal/countdown for all 32 teams:
Wheeler: 2022 NHL prospect pool rankings
Can’t see them being outside the top 5.
To be eligible for inclusion, a skater must be:
To be eligible for inclusion, a goalie must be:
- Under 23 years old. We know that by the time a player turns 23, he is largely done the steep upward progression we see in prospects and will begin to plateau.
- Not a full-time NHL player. This is the arbitrary section of the criteria. Here, I trust my judgment for whether or not a rostered NHL player is still likely to bounce between levels more than I trust any pre-determined games played cutoff. Preference for inclusion as an NHL prospect is more likely to be given to teenagers than 22-year-olds.
- Either signed to an NHL contract or selected in the entry draft, without the expiration of either of those rights. Players who are signed to AHL contracts were not considered.
- Under 25 years old. This age criteria is more reflective of the typical goalie trajectory, allowing for the continued consideration of goalies who are very much still prospects.
- Not currently established as one of their NHL club’s two go-to options.
Given his criteria:
... I would agree. I'm wondering if they place at the top of the heap or not.
Wheeler had Buffalo at 15 in the NHL in his 2021 rankings.
Here is what his Sabres rankings looked like:

With players like Power, Levi, and Krebs being added since those rankings come out, it will be interesting to see how far up they move.
Didn't I see that Buffalo is ranked #3 or #4, something like that?
That was probably someone else's rankings.
Previous ranking 12. Clueless. Any list that doesn't have Buffalo at #1 right now is a farce.
Leading scoring defenseman in the NCAA? Sabres.
Goalie breaking records left and right and leads the NCAA in every category? Sabres.
THREE rookies over a point per game in the AHL. Sabres.
None of which are old enough to buy beer in the US.
What do other teams prospects lead in? Hopeful projections?
Anaheim's got a guy leading the W in defenseman scoring as well as man-child MacTavish, LA's prospects are all over the top of the OHL in scoring (including the top scoring d-man in that league) and Minny has their own group of very good AHLers (Rossi, Boldy who has already made one player expendable on the NHL roster), the #1 goalie in the SHL who is all of 19. There is a lot to like out there. Buffalo doesn't have a monopoly on great prospects.
AHL and NCAA> Juniors. We have players that could've made NHL rosters already, but they decided to let contracts slide this year.
If we're going to debate this, Rossi and Boldy are ripping up the AHL akin to what the Sabres have cooking in Roch and they have arguably the best goalie in the third best league in the world who happens to be backstopping Lulea to the top spot in the SHL. Addison has forced his way onto the Wild blueline and Boldy forced his way on so vigorously, the Wild waived Pitlick to make room. Those guys are all getting it done in the AHL, even into one of the best teams in the NHL now. It's hard for me to discount that.
Rossi and Boldy all have a lower PPG than all three of our rookie forwards. A handful of NHL games means nothing, unless you honestly believe none of Quinn, Peterka, Krebs, or Power could make the team. Your whole debate revolves around a handful of NHL games played.
SHL is definitely a harder league than the NCAA, so I'll give them that for goalie. But you're still comparing that to a goalie that probably would've won the first Hobey Baker since forever if not for him being Canada's goalie at the Olympics.
The whole thing just feels disingenuous. The Ducks have Zegras and Drysdale removed from their list, but only drop one spot?
The Red wings have Raymond and Seider removed, but they move UP 1 spot? Give me a break. It's just a phony list.
