We are sandwiched between all the Delta patients that are still hanging around while the Omicron patients are pouring in. We have had over 40 covid admits in 2 days.

Over 300 hospital staff Covid positive and in quarantine. 90% of those unvaccinated. Admin just pulled the ripcord and hit a hard deadline on vaccines. If we're positive and no symptoms, they want us working.

We've been in a health crisis for years before this and this is just exacerbating the problems we never addressed.

Hang in there, Papa, this thing will be on the decline soon enough. I know the rest of January will be brutal, but after that, things should be better.

I'm struck that the hospital didn't force full vaccine compliance before this. Holy shit.

Thank you for all you do. You guys are the true heroes in all of this.
Thanks. Each hospital system is doing it at its own pace. I think my system just got fed up with it. About time though because patients don't deserve to come to the hospital and catch it from the nurse, doctor or cafeteria worker. They have their own problems.

Almost 1.5 million cases reported in a single day (today). It's f***ing insane. Hospitalizations hit their all-time high yesterday, according to the NYT. See below. 142,388 to the previous high of 142,315, which was last January 14. Deaths have also been trending higher: 7-day average of 1,653 compared to 1,276 last week, a 29.5% increase.

Some good news: it looks like the omicron curves in New York City has plateaued and are on their way downward. Let's hope the rest of the country follows suit.

Not at all. Clearly, the hospitalization rate is low compared to what happened with Delta. My point has always been "sheer numbers." If you are going to have five times reported infections as you did last January, and you are about the same number of hospitalizations, the "rate" is low by comparison. But hospitalizations are now spiking past that number last January.

Sheer numbers.

I would also say..."no one is going to care" is an incredibly cynical view. Hospital administrators, tired doctors, very tired nurses and hospital staff, hospitalized, and patient's families care. A lot.

I don’t know how I got Covid (got vaccinated etc., doesn’t matter I suppose)but it was confirmed today by testing. I feel mild symptoms, nothing horrible or unbearable. Doc says to drink a lot of electrolytes, vitamins, rest and should be fine in 48 hours. If symptoms persist or worsen to call.

No need to retest, I’m quarantined for 10 days.

Feel better man. I was on a video conference with a colleague today and all three of his kids have come down with it. Two with mild symptoms, the other is asymptomatic. He knows it's just a matter of time until he and his wife get it, but the two of them have been fully vaccinated, so they aren't concerned. Omicron is going to put a big dent in the unvaccinated population, because many of them will have antibodies now.
