I'm REALLY hoping Glass gets the nod (have him in a pool) but I can't see him staying in nets, unless Beauch get's a start and actually performs worse.

First goal was alrite, off of Phaneuf in front to Zagrapan, and it went in. Not much he could do IMO. Second goal was real weak, right through the five hole. 3rd was a bit of a trickling puck that went off Syrvet I think off a rebound. Just a flukey goal (we're used to that in Canada). He played OK, nothin special tho and I'd be suprised if Sutter stays with him.

I totally agree with you....the goal through the five whole was definatley pathetic...but i don't think that Beauchemin is any better...Glass has really got a good head on his shoulder and can stay sharp when only facing the few shots that canada's defence will allow.......he also has a great hockey sense as seen from the pass he made in the first period making use of the no 2 line pass in international play

-I'm sure Sutter will give Beauchemin the start against Sweden and go from there.

-Meszaros was the best Slovak, possibly the best defensemen on the ice. He really impressed me.

-Clarke MacCarthur had an excellent game. I thought of him just as a grinder but what a shot on that penalty shot.

-Fraser and Stewart picked it up a notch while Nigel Dawes I though really struggled, as he did in the exhibition games.

-I didn't think Phaneuf or Syvret played that well, Belle and Coburn were solid though.

-Can't wait for this Russia-USA matchup, should go a long way to determining the gold medal matchup (winner will get a bye to the semis, barring a massive upset).

In any case I think Canada has to make a descision. Given the unusually weak play of the defense, I think they should give Glass the next start if they're planning on making him #1. If they're putting the spot up for grabs start Beauchimen next game and go from there.

Yeah, it's funny how a grinder on Team Canada is still a sniper by most people's standards, he had something like 70pts last year?

Final score 7-3

Bergeron got the player of the game award for Canada, missed the Slovakian winner though.
Oh man, I predicted 7-4 game score. I was pretty close there. ;) Nonetheless, blowout Canada. Too bad us Americans down South can't see the game. :(

i'm not sure how many of you saw tsn's interview with coach sutter before the game but he made it preety obvious that Beauchemin was going to get the start for the next game.....so it's not like your being Insightful...sutter wants to see both goalies at the start

Pre-game talk? Heck, I didn't even catch most of the game period. I tuned in for the third. ;)

Played well..

Andrej Meszaros
Clarke MacArthur
Branislav Fabry
Marek Zagrapan
Andrej Sekera
Dion Phaneuf
Shea Weber
Jeff Carter
Sidney Crosby
Patrice Bergeron

Played poorly/not as good as expected...

Andrew Ladd
Ryan Getzlaf
Nigel Dawes
Cameron Barker
Jaroslav Halak
Dan Syvret

No one on Canada played poorly. Syvret made a bad pass behind the Canadian goal that led to a Slovak goal, but otherwise the guys played very well and the game was always in control.

Individually there were a few guys that didn't play as well as they could have.

Nigel Dawes being an obvious one.

Lots of Glass hating here. I only saw the third period but he look alright IMO. McGuire thought he was alright aswell. What were the goals like?

The goals were not his fault, just Canada made a few mistakes and they ended up in the net. Phaneuf and Syvret to be exact.

Crosby....didn't impress me....I'm sure he impressed many of you but to me a pair of tap in goals at the side of the crease just doesn't have me wetting my pants.

I DON"T KNOW WHETHER TO LAUGH OR CRY.
DON CHERRY,do you think we could give this guy an award for the stupidest post
of the year.

From what I have seen of Crosby, he has lived up to the hype. He is a monster on the puck, tenacious off it, has wheels, a shot, he is the total package.

Ya, and Barker had a tiny mishap on the 2nd goal, although Glass probably wants that one back. In his defense, did anyone see that replay of the Zagrapan goal from behind Glass. The puck seemed to just squeak through and had it been anywhere else it would have been stopped.

Canada's perennial hubris is its overconfidence. No doubt that's how they lost to the USA last year, and if they lose this year, it'll be with a quickly-fading swagger to the Russians, one game after winning 9-0 over a third-world country. By the third period, the sloppy play was even spreading to Crosby, Phaneuf and Bergeron.

Neither goalie was very good in this game. Syvret, Dawes and Ladd were pretty much useless altogether.

This tournament is Canada's to lose, IMO. If they don't win, they have nobody to blame but themselves.

lol.

Not sure what he expects from Crosby. Sidney tore it up along the boards and was great.

Unbiased Canadian is a hard man to impress.

Not sure if it's just me, but Cam Barker hasn't been as good as advertised... atleast not over the last year in the games I've seen him.

I did some pretty good drafting thus far:

Patrice Bergeron: 2 goals 2 assists (and MVP ;))

Stanislav Lascek: 1 goal (maybe some other points? and also MVP)

Boris Valabik or whatever his name is.. he got a point tonight.

first period was very poor. canada completly outplayed the slovaks. but gotta say that canada first line was so much better that any other line on the ice. it will be hard for any team to shut down crosby-bergeron duo.

the third period is what i'd like to see from slovaks.
meszaros played what i'd expected....i like the guy. i'm dissapointed with valabik. he should use much more his size. he's really big

fabry, ruzicka and scurko played well. you guys don't have to agree with me on this one but halak wasn't that bad. he's made few big saves. i like him too.

the sekera penalty in third was a joke.

btw: congrats ;)

Haha Yes I am...Crosby played a good game....but I just didn't see anything from him that made me get sooo excited.

People try to say he is the next Mario or Gretkzy...but you can't even compare the numbers he is putting up in juniors to Super Mario and The Great One.

Crosby at 16 and 17
2003-04 Rimouski Oceanic QMJHL 59 54 81 135 74 - 16 year old season
2004-05 Rimouski Oceanic QMJHL 35 26 48 74 32 - 17 year old season - so far

Gretzky at 16 and 17
Sault-Ste.-Marie Greyhounds OHA 64 70 112 182 14 - 16 year old season
1978-79 Edmonton Oilers WHA 72 43 61 104 19 - 17 year old season - PRO HOCKEY

Mario at 16 and 17
1982-83 Laval Voisins QMJHL 66 84 100 184 76 - 16 year old season
1983-84 Laval Voisins QMJHL 70 133 149 282 92 - 17 year old season

Is he the best player in this years draft..... YES, BY FAR!!
Is he the top prospect since Lindros .... YES, although I like Ovechkin

Should he be compared to Wayne and Mario....NEVER!

Either way this is a WJC thread and he should have a great tourney...he will be outscored by Bergeron...which I said in my predictions Sidney would finish second in team scoring.

I agree with you on Halak...he wasn't spectacular but he made a couple huge saves...and most of the goals we scored, he had no chance at all.

To expect similar numbers is insane.

Two complete different era's of hockey.

If Canada had completed some of those "back door" passes in front of the net in the first period, it could have been really ugly. Halak is super slow.

Can't say anything about Glass because I saw none of Slovakia's goal. Christmas dinner interrupted the game. :D

As some people said, this could be Canada's "bad" game of the round robin. Let's hope they clean up some of the defensive work, but I think they are in pretty good shape.
