If Canada had completed some of those "back door" passes in front of the net in the first period, it could have been really ugly. Halak is super slow.

Can't say anything about Glass because I saw none of Slovakia's goal. Christmas dinner interrupted the game. :D

As some people said, this could be Canada's "bad" game of the round robin. Let's hope they clean up some of the defensive work, but I think they are in pretty good shape.
I agree there, every time Canada made a cross-crease pass, the net was wide open. More of that and it could have been double digits for Canada. Halak's really slow going from post to post.

The first period was solid only from the defensive end of things, and the line of Crosby, Bergeron and Perry. But the rest of the offensive lines just weren't clicking.

And in the second and third period, the defensive end of things began to collapse, play got sloppy and the offense slowed down it's pressure.

I just didn't think it was a pretty game. The hockey action wasn't fluid at all. Very sloppy at both ends of the ice, but that can be expected for the first game of the tournament I suppose.

Slovakia is a very good team though, they have some solid players and a win is a win over a team like Slovakia, regardless of whether it was sloppy or not.

A buddy of mine said that Stewart didn't play the first six minutes of the game. Is that true?
Has anyone seen stats posted with play time for each player?

And two completely different players.

Mario and Wayne >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Crosby
I'm not calling Crosby out to be the next great player in line with Lemieux or Gretzky, or anyone else for that matter. Yzerman, Sakic and Forsberg? Yes. Keep in mind that it's the great ones who make things look so simple.

But the two different era's make a huge difference - enough that it skews the numbers and you can't rely on them to make the comparison.

Were they teaching the trap to 14 year olds in the late 70s and early 80s? No.

Was the average goaltender as good in the early 70s and 80s as good as the average goalie is now? Not even close. The shift in goaltending has been the biggest change in hockey in the last 15 years, more so than than the trap.

But regardless of everything, I think most of us will take Gretzky and Lemieux's word about this kid's talent over yours.

Haha Yes I am...Crosby played a good game....but I just didn't see anything from him that made me get sooo excited.

People try to say he is the next Mario or Gretkzy...but you can't even compare the numbers he is putting up in juniors to Super Mario and The Great One.

Crosby at 16 and 17
2003-04 Rimouski Oceanic QMJHL 59 54 81 135 74 - 16 year old season
2004-05 Rimouski Oceanic QMJHL 35 26 48 74 32 - 17 year old season - so far

Gretzky at 16 and 17
Sault-Ste.-Marie Greyhounds OHA 64 70 112 182 14 - 16 year old season
1978-79 Edmonton Oilers WHA 72 43 61 104 19 - 17 year old season - PRO HOCKEY

Mario at 16 and 17
1982-83 Laval Voisins QMJHL 66 84 100 184 76 - 16 year old season
1983-84 Laval Voisins QMJHL 70 133 149 282 92 - 17 year old season

Is he the best player in this years draft..... YES, BY FAR!!
Is he the top prospect since Lindros .... YES, although I like Ovechkin

Should he be compared to Wayne and Mario....NEVER!

Either way this is a WJC thread and he should have a great tourney...he will be outscored by Bergeron...which I said in my predictions Sidney would finish second in team scoring.

CHECK YOUR STATS, Gretzky is 7 months older in the seasons you mentioned and Lemieux's 17 and 18 year old seasons are used where you call them 16 and 17. :shakehead At Sid's current age Gretzky and Lemeiux were BOTH still in the first year you quoted for each player.

I DON"T KNOW WHETHER TO LAUGH OR CRY.
DON CHERRY,do you think we could give this guy an award for the stupidest post
of the year.

If Crosby didn't have a point tonight, he still would have been one of the most dominant players. He creates turnovers like a madman and never EVER loses a one on one battle along the boards. His presence of mind when he's in the corner with an opponent, or even two is amazing. He always wins the puck and feeds an open teammate.

Throw in the fact that he was a maestro on both of his goals, totally setting himself up - and I scratched my head when I read it too. You must truly struggle to understand the game if the things he was doing tonight failed to impress you.

:handclap: Very impressive showing by Bergeron and Crosby throughout the tournament. It seems like scoring goals are routine and effortless for the 2, especially on the PP.

Besides a few players, the rest of the team is another story. But it doesn't even seem to matter. The top line has been enough to bag us not just a win, but a blowout in every game we've played so far.

The rest of the team better pick up before we face a team like the U.S.A or Russia.

So is Crosby the only Canadian who goes hard into the corners...is he the only Canadian who can win a battle on the puck...is he the only one driving the net....hell tonight I heard Gord Miller say "Here's Crosby, one on five" and the Slovaks were killing a penalty, only four guys on the ice.

I'm just saying with the majority of people hopping on the bandwagon, Sidney is being made into something he is not......bigger then the team....wrong attitude.

His team in the Q is pretty much under achieving big time....if a player was that good he would lead his team to wins...doesn't matter how many points you put up ....it's the wins that count.

Ya I guess you are right.....ok I'll jump on the bandwagon......

I can't wait for Crosby to.........

Record 140 points in an NHL season....not gonna happen.
Score 50 goals in 39 games.......no chance.
Score 100 points as a rookie.....nope.
Win a Mem Cup.....no

I'm sure Wayne and Mario are right...Crosby is a super talent....but I can tell you right now...I would put money on Crosby never evening getting as many points in his career as Wayne had assists.....simple as that. Will Crosby be the best player in the NHL in five years.....I'm sure he has a chance.....is he as good as Gretzk or Mario....never will be.

Every one has there own opinion and I'm entitled to mine so I'm gonna share it.Hes good, he's great....but everyone here is treating him like a god.....which he isn't.

I doubt he could get as many points in a season as either unless they change the game. Goalies arn't standing up and wearing skinny arse pads anymore either.

I think #99 or #66 are saying more than anything is that when Sidney Crosby comes into the league he could have as large of an impact as they did, that doesn't mean he will score as points in a season, only that he will be that far above everyone else when he is in the league.

Hopefully they are right, cause hockey needs another Great One.

U cannot compare them to sid b/c they played in totally different eras of hockey. That´s why they had more points. Without the cheapshots he is getting in rimouske he would still get 3pts a game, tough. after the wjc he will score over 3pts in the q.

Sid will dominate the nhl in 2 years. however, he will never record 200pts in a season but 150 or 160 are in target....

In todays nhl I doubt that he'll get that much points. 100-120 tops.

Nobody is asking you to jump on any bandwagon, but to say he was not impressive yesterday is ridiculous.

Just like some people overhype him, others take it upon themselves to underhype him. And saying he didn't do anything impressive in that game, you are doing exactly that.

Before he scored 2 goals I was thinking Clarke MacArthur was playing a good game.
So make that a great game.Phaneuf was strong.Carters line sure did play alot and
what was up with not giving Crosby much icetime especially on the powerplay.
Whenever he was on the power play they either scored or almost scored. The
Richards ,Stewart,Dawes line so far have been a bit of a disappointment but maybe
they'll come on stong yet.

The best comparision we can make for Crosby is a healthy Peter Forsberg... which is scary.

I always think of Crosby like an Dionne/LaFontaine player with better defense and more physical.

But ya cant denied Crosby is very similar to Forsberg in term of style and puckcontrol.

Dude! I just think you dont like Crosby because you did not believe in him from the begining, and now that he is proving ya wrong you just lost it and try to down talk him and try to make ppl follow ya lead so ya dont feel like you are the only one that was wrong about Crosby.

And about the points and goals you mention. If the NHL dont change so it will be like the 80s NO ONE will ever score 50 goals in 39 games ever! A supertalented scorer like Kovalchuk had problem enough to score 40+ goals a season. And even for a regurlar superstar NHLer have problem to score 100 points in NHL nowdays so yes you are right Crosby wont score 100 points as a rookie. And you do know that the amount of Gretzky assists is totalt 1963 points! that is more points than anyone elses points totalt. In this era of hockey if Crosby could reach 1500-1800 points during his career that is a huuuuge accomplishment.

And while you talk about the numbers of Gretzky and Lemieux in junior and NHL and then compare it to Crosby I felt like that you just sleep throught the whole 90s and just wake up and think you are still in the 80s. Well, welcome to the 20th century.

Yes, and they both looked great. A dominating pair.

Ya I was really impressed with the way Weber played, i've watched him with Kelowna and it looks like he may have even elevated his game more.

U.C.

What about Meszaros? It was the first time I see him play and I was surprised. I didn't think he was that kind of player. Reports had him as a offensive defenseman, but he is very physical and sound defensively. He is NHL ready.

He is NHL ready.

Meszaros was the only Slovak player that really stood out for me, but it's hard to judge his NHL-readiness based on such a lop-sided game.

Crosby-Bergeron have chemistry like horny teenagers ... if they ever wind up together in the NHL ... wow.
