Proposal: MTL-BOS

Looking back its unbelievable how badly the Devils got fleeced n the Zacha trade. Haula is now a capdump!

Wonder what Prospects and picks Hab's fans are willing to give up for a "real top 6 C".

I mean he is a “real” 2C. Responsible, good at face offs and can succeed with higher skilled players. Do you want him to be the best player on the second line? Nope. Do you want him featured on the PP like he has been so much this year in Boston? Nope. But as a responsible guy to pair with an irresponsible winger he does the job. Boston just has him miscast as a 1C.

He’d be great as a 2C in MTL. Seems like a lot of Habs fans have this “all or nothing” attitude about the 2C thing where they just unreasonably want another 1C on the 2nd line a la Pittsburgh, Edmonton, and the Washington Cup team (Kuznetsov, Backstrom). That isn’t realistic, and isn’t even necessary, imo. A decent 2C like Zacha would be just fine as long as the rest of the roster was built correctly.

Not recent years
So? When was the last time Boston was getting ready to rebuild/selling off assets while MTL was getting ready to exit a rebuild and had a surplus of picks and prospects? It’s a rather unique situation in regards to these two teams.

They have traded once post orignial 6 team. In 2000. Eric Weinrich vs Patrick Traverse.

Lame, unoriginal whining aside, what do you think is a fair price then for a 2C in his prime? Just curious, since you had no problem making a trollish whiny comment that contributes nothing to the topic.
Come on man, don't be bitter. Life is too short.

Never was a fan of Zacha. I think the price may be fair for someone a fair bit better than him. I think it's an overpay as I don't consider him a recurring 60 point player going forward. And not a target for me.

I do not have a counter-proposal for someone else at that price, so I am not making a thread trying to propose a solution that does not exist at the moment.

COL gave up gave up Calum Ritchie + 1st + 3rd for Brock Nelson and an AHL depth guy. Nelson is slightly better than Zacha offensively, but worse defensively. The 1st rounder they paid is likely worse than the one in this proposal, but Ritchie is better than Beck or Mailloux. And the 3rd they gave up is worth more than the AHL guy. Nelson is also a lot older than Zacha. Pretty comparable trades, imo. That’s what 2Cs cost to acquire. The Habs need a 2C. You aren’t getting one for free.

No one said for free but if they will spend all those assets I believe it should be a player better than Zacha.

Or they can get an older guy for much much less and play him there as a place holder until one of their younger guys can take the gig.

100% agree with general fanager above.

Anyways not gonna continue arguing here, I'm out of this thread. See ya!

“All those assets”; they are literally surplus and pieces redundant to MTL and it’s a fair value deal on top of that.

If you want a C better than Zacha, it’s going to cost a lot more than this.

Any older guy that could help MTL in this regard is going to cost. Like I said, Nelson is an older guy and look what COL paid to get him.

Even if it’s signing Duchene this summer if they were somehow able to pull it off, he’s going to want a lot more AAV than what Zacha makes, so it’s pick your poison. Also, Duchene is 34, so there the risk that he starts declining as soon as next year.

Where are all these better options you seem to think are out there?

I don’t think so. Romanov got traded for 13th overall, and he was barely an established top-4 D at the time (if he even was). Zacha is an established 2C in his prime, so ~16th overall + a decent prospect seems pretty reasonable.
Is he really though

Gonna finish with 50+ points, decent at faceoffs, decent defensively.

Does that not sound like a 2C to you?
Barely finishing with 50 points and breaking even at xG% while being stapled to Pastrnak and playing 19.5 minutes a night does not really sound like an established 2C to me

I think it’s pretty clear at this point that Newhook is never going to be a full-time center in the NHL. He can fill in there in a pinch when needed, but his game is really not suited to it - he’s not a play driver or distributor, he’s not good defensively, he’s not good at faceoffs, and he just lacks the IQ for the position at the NHL level. He’s a decent middle-six winger, and he plays better on the wing because he isn’t forced to focus on things he isn’t good at.

I don't know where you've been this season but Newhook played much better hockey this season playing C over his time on the wing.

In fact, its pretty well known and heard over and over. Hard to take you seriously when you say thing like he plays better on the wing.

Bad defensively is deserved, its not by lack of effort, as you said, low IQ/acumen, he isn't the worst either. He is bad at faceoff but its something you can work on and get a few %.

But still after all that he is way way better playing C than winger.
