I think Ruutu was smirking about Straka jumping him. Ruutu always does that after a fight or so, his way to annoy opponents. With all due respect to Straka to sticking up for his teamfight, Ruutu would drop him like a wet glove if they really went for it, and I think he was telling him just that.

That's exactly how it is. I really don't think he was smiling about the hit, just about what happened afterwards...

I've been watching the hit over and over and if Ruutu gets suspended, it would be a travesty and most likely only because the hit was on Jagr...

but I don't think it was as dirty as just about every Swede in this thread thinks it was. I believe they hold some kind of grudge against him :dunno:
I can't say I like Marcus Nilson either :)
I would have liked to have Marcus Nilson in this tournament. But he didnt make the team

As for the Ruutuhit... i think it was clean (and im swedish :P)

And a promise is a promise.

-Aki Berg
A man who can dish out punishing checks as well as pass game winning goals. The use of a phrase "toi noi" is
also a beautiful example of this player´s abilites.
-Niklas Bäckström
One might think that being numner 3 goalie is nothing. That ain´t true. We need someone to play airguitar wearing only cups.
-Niklas Hagman
He really gives his everything. Speed is his superhuman ability. Has anyone seen him stand still? Where is he? What does he look like? He must be Batman!
-Jukka Hentunen
The bull. Has anyone heard there are some bulls in Chicago? No, me neather. However, there is a bull in Joroinen.
-Jussi Jokinen
The future is secured. We don´t need Raipe anymore. There is a new hope! These words indicate to the passing abilities that would be ranked 92/100 in EA Sports video game.
-Olli Jokinen
No one want´s to check his head. It would be a suicide.
-Niko Kapanen
Goatees rock! He is a modern day Pelé. You should see him on the football field.
-Mikko Koivu
Some day his older brother will be as good as Mikko is. At Monopoly.
-Saku Koivu
-He is terrible at Monopoly. However he does know how to fake a shot and pass it hard to Selänne! GOOOOOAAAL!
-Antti Laaksonen
There are only two Finns that can´t speak finnish. Andy McCoy and Antti. Ain´t that something?
-Jere Lehtinen
A true superstar. Isn´t it weird that he can be the "most underrated player in the NHL" for 5 years in a row?
Doesn´t that make him overrated?
-Toni Lydman
Don´t mess with him! I have never seen him makin a mistake whatsoever. He is solid as a rock!
-Antti-Jussi Niemi
He´ll go for the big hit if it´s possible. I have my fingers crossd that he will hit the spot. All in all one of
the best stay at home defenders there are in the Europe.
-Ville Nieminen
I wish they put a microfone in his helmet to really hear what he speaks/does on the ice.
A great embassador for Tampere!
-Antero Niittymäki
Kiprtsoff? Who? Antero is like the great wall of china. You just cant get around him!
-Fredrik Norrena
How many of you have shut out Italy in Olympics? Aha. I made my point!
-Petteri Nummelin
Smooth as Gillette Mach 3. A passing machine.
-Teppo Numminen
He was in a bread commercial in mid 90´s. Luckily it wasn´t the highlight of he´s career.
Torino 2006 will be!
-Ville Peltonen
Ville doesn´t have to pay for a single beer in any bar in Finland. Ever. He owns Sweden!
-Jarkko Ruutu
"Kovien poistojen erikoismies"
-Sami Salo
How calm can you be without being dead? And when it´s time for action.. Oh boy. Boards are falling apart.
-Teemu Selänne
SSSsssniper. He bites like a snake. He´s fast and skillful. He will be the best player of the season 2005-2006.
-Kimmo Timonen
He helped Kalpa to make it to the sm-liiga against Sport. And I have heard that he has played pretty well in some distant redneck city.

Thank you!

http://www.saunalahti.fi/kholtta/J.Ruutu.mpg I don't know, whether or not this video has been in this thread. But as you can see here, Jagr close to the board, not far away from it, so definitely not a boarding. Ruutu takes 2 kicks speed and hits Jagr perfectly. Unfortunately, that czeck primadonna goes on her knees and that was she gets hurt. Plus that her helmet is so lousy, that it doesn't give any protection.

Who cares what the rules say. This hit had nothing to do with the game.
This "victory" does not taste good. Czech were without their best player and they didn't have their best game.

hey but seriously, i thought the hit was pretty bad. but as a canucks fan i see this kind of stuff from ruutu all the time. i don't really care anymore what he does because as long as he's a canuck i'll still gaze into his eyes when i'm alone on my computer screen whispering his name.

This victory tastes very good.

I seriously don't understand this mentality,
that some players shouldn't be hit.

You take out the speed of a faster oppponent
by hitting them. If you do it clean, it's ok.

Tonzan,
Nice work with the player intro's   .
And BTW, I don't think we need
to send Hoyla to Torino. Good for us.

I really appreciate that! Thank you!

Looks like my prediction has fulfilled, unfortunately for us. Jagr's injury was bad, but it doesn't justify our bad playing in the 3rd period. Finns deserved to win. And if we keep playing like this, we can stop thinking about medals.

At first, I thought the hit was dirty, but after I saw those pictures I came to second thoughts. It was shoulder-on-shoulder.
...Here we go again...

The dirty part of the hit, in my opinioni, was how Ruutu took a huge run at a player who was already being checked. It wasn't necessarily a boarding penalty, but it was charging and it was a bad hit. He took a run at Jagr in a way that was neither sportsmanlike nor legal.

Of course it was. Clean hit at all, no sing that ruutu wanted to injury him, ruutu was not coming from behind, it really was not coward cheap shot.
ruutu is really classy player and everyone likes him, he didn't use cheapshots in past...great hockey player, not only agressive goon. :p:

Jagr has played >1000 NHL games. I'd say he should know better
and keep his head up. I'm sure he does that in Manhattan.
Definitively no charging, as Ruutu didn't accelerate before the hit.

Nice clean hard hit, unfortunate accident for Jagr, luckily he (JJ) is
ok and plays tomorrow. Simple.

Maybe you could try and learn what "from behind" means.

You are simply reacting like the referee did. You do not watch the actual hit, but the fact that the other is a star and the other one is a rat.

The hit itself was clean, and nobody is denying that Jagr is a superstar and Ruutu is a pest. Still...you have to judge the actual hit, not what the players are. It was huge mistake by the ref to send Ruutu out. The hit was clean, no matter what happened to Jagr.

I didn't want to sound aggressive, sorry :)

Just pis**ses me off that NYR pages are calling it a totally
illegal hit, which is wasn't at all.

Anyways, I'm glad JJ is ok and we'll still see him play in the OGs.

Oh, come on! Anyone has to look down at some point when they're challenging for the puck. That's why boarding and charging penalties exist, to prevent players from taking runs at other players while they're working along the boards or fighting for the puck.

If you're going to come in and hit someone when they are being checked by someone else already, you make damn well sure you know what you're doing. You DO NOT try to injure someone. You DO NOT take 4 steps to get up to full speed and paste him against the boards. Ruutu knew what he was doing. I'm not saying that he wanted to hurt Jagr per se, but he should be more responsible.

We were outplaying the Czechs anyway. That was not a clean hit and not something for Finns to be proud of.

(PS> Regarding bias: I am a Rangers fan, but I am Finnish. As far as the Olympics go, I don't care if Rangers players do well or not).
