Couple of thoughts:
We are clearly not good enough right now to play for the Stanley Cup. There is no way we beat the Kings in a 7 game series as we stand today. I think we -could- beat the Kings if someone (Goalie, Scorer) gets super hot and puts us on his back, but we can't expect that to happen. If we play them in a "normal" series, we lose. I don't even want to think about what the Penguins would do to us.
That said, I didn't think we played too bad overall. The Steen-Backes-Oshie line played well (Oshie's one egregious turnover not-withstanding.) They were dangerous on offense and for the most part shut down the big line of LA. The Perron-Sobi-Tank line looked really good too, scoring both of our goals (Perron's one dumb penalty not-withstanding.) Perron deserves credit, he played a -much- more North-South/simple game after the meeting. When your top two lines only do two poor things (that really stick out) all game, especially against a team like the Kings, that's pretty good. The 4th line put in a regular 4th line performance, superior to what other teams 4th lines usually do, but not overall game changers.
Then we get to the AMac-Berglund-Stewart line. This line, AMac in particular, was horrible. In fact, I'd be willing for the most part to give Berglund and Stewart a pass for this game, but AMac's play was inexcusable. There's a reason he was a -4 tonight. For a guy who's a veteran, and the only guy with a Cup ring on our entire roster, (Not counting IR) having just had a huge closed door meeting about playing better and everyone doing their job, this was the worst game he could have played. I'm almost wondering if he wants to get traded/retire at this point. The second and third goals, while imo were more on Halak just being Halak (get to him in a second) both could have EASILY been avoided if AMac had given 1/2 a **** about playing defense. I called him out on it after the first period, and he actually got even worse. The second goal, he was right there to help our Dman out, but he just stands there and watches them swordfight with their sticks, then watches Lewis pop a shot in without even reaching out his stick at all. The third goal, he at least follows Richards back on D, but then just falls over instead of actually trying to stick his man, which is why Richards got about 3 whacks at that puck. Simply inexcusable. If I'm Doug Armstrong, I'm calling everyone on the East Coast, and also the Ducks to see what I can get for this washed up has-been.
Halak had a regular Halakian performance. He made some decent saves, especially at the end of the second period off a rebound of his. However, he flopped around like a fish, didn't control a single rebound, and looked totally unable to track the puck. He also let in a total crap 2nd goal, and a moderately crap 3rd goal. You could argue that the net pushed his skate off, but if he hadn't slid/flopped around he wouldn't have just had his skate in the way. Not to mention that I don't buy a net jangling on it's moorings as enough force to prevent a man with supposedly decent leg strength to lose a seal. In the end though, it's the same story with Halak: Makes some decent saves, let's in some meh goals, doesn't give anyone confidence that he's really The Guy, and seems to be Just A Guy.
Our D played well for the most part. AP and Shatty clearly took the message of playing within yourself to heart. Neither of them did anything egregious.
Final thought: This team is truly going nowhere until we can spend money. Our core, for the most part, is fine. But we -need- to fill the holes we need to fill, b/c at this time, we're just not going to compete with the best the NHL has to offer. It's that simple.
