He is NOT worth of 8 million. He is a bad version of Pat Kane who scores only at home games and haven't shown anything against tougher opposition. Give him 5 or sell him!

If he's so bad why would anyone want him? Anything below 7.5 and I'll be happy.

When half the games are at home, you need to produce away from it. Gaudreau is a great talent, but at 8m? No. Give him 6.8m or something.

Not sure where all this "can't score away from home" business comes from. His first season he had a pretty even scoring split and last year on the road he shot at 5% and at home he shot ~18%. He created chances at the same rate at both home and on the road but was lucky at home and unlucky on the road. Pretty sure that will normalize over a larger sample size and you'll be hard pressed to find a flames fan that is concerned about his game last year.

And even if he continued to struggle on the road and performed at the same pace at home we're talking about someone that scored more points than P Kane, Benn, Crosby in those 41 games at home. We'll still take that.

True that. If he was as effective on the road as he was at home, he would have been the undisputed best player in the league. Would have run away with the scoring title.
I'd say those expectations would be a little high haha

This is as dumb as Kessel's extension, sure he's worth it, kinda but he's not key piece of a winning culture.

Kessel was just the leading scorer on the cup champs. The extension as fine. He was worth it. Guy was PPG for 3 years with Bozak as his centre.

Seems about right for an ask. They should settle on about $7. I wouldn't have any problem paying that for a guy of his skill.

No way he gets that. He has even less leverage than Troubadour does because he can't accept an offer sheet.

You're right, he has no leverage other than being the best player on the team. The Flames can play without him and see how that goes for them. They can also bridge him if he will accept it and see how they make out in two years when he wants 9.5/10.

Cut the ******** give him 7.5 over 7 years and call it the day.

With the cap, IMO, he's 7 give or take half depending on term.

I think he's forcing the Flames hand with his "8M range" number. IMO, he probably wants to play out in the NY/NJ/Philly area but not 'averse' to staying in Calgary; the caveat with the latter is that because he knows he's arguably their best player, he's gonna force their hand - either trade to East where he's rumored to want to be or pay him.

Simple business negotiation tactic.

Precisely what ROR did.

You're right, he has no leverage other than being the best player on the team.

TJ. Brodie and Brian Elliott are the best players on the team. He is the best forward on the team but even then he is still a winger, he does not kill penalties, take draws, support his D in front of the net, etc. like Backlund/Monahan do.

Kessel was just the leading scorer on the cup champs. The extension as fine. He was worth it. Guy was PPG for 3 years with Bozak as his centre.

Those cup champs are over the Salary Cap if they are paying Kessel's full salary. Or did you forget what Toronto retained?

If the Leafs want to volunteer to pay 15% of Johnny's Salary for the next seven years, I will gladly sign him for 8M.

Brian Elliot has yet to play a single game for the flames and you are saying he's their best player? Johnny is defiantly the best player on that team, without him they don't score and have the worst collection of forwards in the nhl.

pay him at the very least 7.5x 8. if you are so sure of yourself Calgary, sign him to a 1 year contract then go to arbitration. my bet is Calgary wants no part of arbitration because of what they might have to pay.

Gaudreau is the star of the team. The stars make the money. It doesn't matter how many good shifts Backlund has.

Pretty hilarious IF there is a "Gio cap".

You don't just hand him whatever he wants, but it never looks good when you nickle and dime your top player....

Yeah, because nearly 7 million a year is chump change for a guy coming off his ELC.

He's simply not worth that kind of money at this point. Great season last year, but I wouldn't give him that kind of money yet.

Good for him.
Lmao at people thinking home vs road scoring is repeatable. I've got some lovely beachfront property in Arizona at a great price for y'all

Alas I was wrong....but I still say he is going to have a short career.....one massive hit is all it takes and that is it for this very very tiny and slight player......:)

I have caught a lot of flack for the same thought process as this.

It is like people don't understand physics.

No matter how many Flames fans think he is the next Kane, I see someone who has been lucky so far in his career. When he gets caught, there is going to be trouble in Cow Town.

It makes a lot more sense to pay a player big money for the entirety of his prime, than to give a 30 year old 8 million over 8 years and have them never live up to that deal.

Contract tends are changing - older guys getting less money, and younger guys are wanting more earlier on.

If teams want to keep their talent they'll have to pay for it
