I'm betting that Gaudreau wants to end up in the $8 million range and has already come down to that amount. He probably started negotiations in the $9-10 million and has dropped while the Flames have only increased slightly. I bet you that Calgary wants him around Monahan's level but Gaudreau wants to get paid now.

This is probably closer to the truth than speculation that 8M was the initial ask. Especially this late in the game if that's what's coming out now it is more likely the number he doesn't want to drop below than a "starting point" type of thing.

Interesting comment considering:

There's more but I'll let you off the hook.

Alas I was wrong....but I still say he is going to have a short career.....one massive hit is all it takes and that is it for this very very tiny and slight player......:)

This is as dumb as Kessel's extension, sure he's worth it, kinda but he's not key piece of a winning culture.

JG is a winner. There is no other way to look at it and plays a much different style than Kessel. They are very different players but he is the most consistently competitive little SOB I've seen in a flames jersey since Theo.

No way he gets that. He has even less leverage than Troubadour does because he can't accept an offer sheet.

True, but he also has something tangible to back up why he thinks he deserves that money. Don't think that there isn't a lot of pressure on management to get him signed before the season starts, because there definitely is. That teams season will be over before it starts if Gaudreau holds out for any significant amount of time to start the year. Of course they could go short term on a deal with him, but thats really just pushing this a year or 2 down the road. If Gaudreau continues to produce like he did last season, or even improves on that then he is going to demand that same money if not more, as he should.

Am I taking crazy pills?

In what world is Johnny Gaudrea not worth 8? If I can get JG on an 8x8 contract I'd be throwing pens at him from every direction.

Really don't get how people don't agree with this, he's one of the best offensive players in the league.

Insurance on what income? I wish I could insure myself on income I plan to make.

If the insurance cost is similar to the Olympics then the players can expect to spend about 0.30% in premiums against future earnings.

e.g. If Gaudreau wanted to insure himself for $60m (a hypothetical 8 x $7.5m contract) the premium would probably be around $180k for the WCH.

Also, the PA gets to decide how to distribute their share of the WCH proceeds. They might be putting some of that towards insurance for players not under contract.

Really you can insure yourself as much as you want. If you are willing to drop $50,000 on insurance to do something potentially dangerous. You could probably get an insurance company to take that bet.

Agreed. Very talented and very dynamic player for sure. You guys are lucky to have hI'm. Flames definitely need to get him locked up long term, bridging would be a huge mistake in this case. Just because he has no leverage no...it won't stay that way. In two years time we're talking about an offer sheet for sure if not arbitration. I have no idea if he's eligible or not because I can't be bothered to look it up.

The flames can take a hard line with Gaudreau get him locked in at around the 7m mark.

Johnny is gonna get paid. And he is gonna get paid pretty close to what he wants. He might have to sit until November though.

There is a lot more to consider here than Gaudreaus' best interest. The agent, Lewis Gross only has one big name client. He NEEDS to knock this one out of the park and he doesn't care what is best for the Calgary Flames.

This is 2002 Jarome Iginla all over again. He is gonna get paid whether the Flames management likes it or not.

How do you know that? He is Flames best offensive player if not their best player. How isnt that a key piece of a winning culture going forward?

In the world where players 5-years from UFA don't get paid $8M per season.

I'm amazed how many people see no issue with giving a player who can't be offersheeted or go to arbitration 8M a season. Why would you give in so easily?

Gaudreau isn't going to be traded, but he's just as unlikely to get 8M from the Flames. They will get him down to around 7.

He is NOT worth of 8 million. He is a bad version of Pat Kane who scores only at home games and haven't shown anything against tougher opposition. Give him 5 or sell him!
