I don't see Treliving muddying the relationship by holding out during the regular season. If it's true Gaudreau can't wait to play in the East, you can't dig your heels in this contract and piss him off. You show him respect this go round, pay him a little more than you're prepared to ($7.5m-ish) and hope he's happy enough to stick around for another contract down the road.

Obviously that can't be the primary intention during these negotiations, but it's an important factor to keep in mind. Last thing you want is your best player not happy with playing for your team and asking for a trade 2 years into a new contract.

I think in the unfortunate case he does want to leave, then that is exactly when you have to dig your heels in.

Sign him to a very trade-friendly contract and begin the long, long process of exploring your options to deal him.

Fortunately, I think Gaudreau wants to be here for awhile.

He makes that claim because it's the most expedient thing to say in a situation like this. Saying that you don't want to be in a city really escalates a conflict and doesn't seem helpful unless things are really off the rails.

Saying you want out is a card a player should use wisely (and rarely). It doesn't sound like Gaudreau and the Flames are at that point yet. We may still see a trade here but I don't think there will be a lot of public fireworks leading up to it.

As one of the guys said in the Godfather movie "Blood is expensive".

Screw that, if Treliving thinks Johnny wants to leave after this contract nickel and dime him hard and make sure his contract is tradeable.

Why would you cave?

You guys need to take a negotiations course haha

You nickel and dime him now and you might as well pack his suitcase for him when his SHORT contract is over.

Keep him happy during these negotiations and you likely have him for a couple extra years on this contract and even a shot at negotiating a second one.

II, I hope he does want to be here for a long time, but I also think that if he wants to play closer to home at some point down the road, maybe spending the next 5-8 years here changes his mind and he's all for that second contract.

Exactly. There's a difference between being assertive in a negotiation and being a snot. If the Flames push too hard towards the snotty side then they will lose the player down the road. If they play more to the centre where everybody has a chance of winning then you can keep building the relationship.

Again, if he wants a 5 year contract. He won't get any more than 6 million. Trade him at the deadline in year 4 and we could get whatever we want in return. I'd be fine with that. If he doesn't want to be in Calgary, throwing money at him isn't a solution that I want to go for.

If Gaudreau is hinting at leaving while he has no rights. He's smoking crack if he thinks he's going to get a record breaking RFA contract. If he goes short contract, Calgary will get a sweetheart deal.

Even if he wants to stay in Calgary, he is probably going to be unhappy with the contract. Just the nature of his contract situation. If Treliving caves and gives him what he wants I will have lost respect for Brad.

Johnny is not going to get $8m+ on any length of contract. I think $7.5m is as high as he goes and that's on an 8 yr. deal and it only goes down from there. Which i'm ok with. If Brad was going to cave and give him what he wants, he would have done it already. He's a smart GM and isn't going to fold.

Actually, I'm not even concerned about the dollar value as much as the length of the contract and Johnny's willingness to stay here after the contract. Worst thing we could see is a bridge deal taking him to UFA. :shakehead Writing's on the wall at that point.

Seems like the main leverage he does have is sitting out. I don't think missing paychecks in the short run will make them fold and take whatever they can get. Seems like Calgary would be missing his production a ton during those missed games. Both stand to lose out by him missing games.

If I've learned anything about Johnny Gaudreau since arriving in Calgary. It's that this kid hates missing games of any kind.

Especially considering the last game he played was that unreal game vs Sweden. I'm pretty sure it's killing him inside that he isn't part of the team right now. For a reason like money, I can't see this getting in the way. All Johnny needs is a copy of NHL 17 and his family in town and he's good to go.

I think 5 and 6 year contracts are completely off the table. Makes no sense for Calgary. And 4 years doesn't make any sense for Gaudreau. He'll get the same AAV as a three year deal.

It'll be 3, 7, or 8. He'll still have 2 RFA years left after 3 years so Calgary will still have some negotiating power.

6M x 3, 7.15M x 7. or 7.325M x 8.

Happy with any of them.

Even if he ever did want to play long term in Calgary, he sure must not want to now

They are likely hammering out how many bags of skittles he gets everyday.

I'd imagine this gets done before the weekend so he can play opening night.

A reliable source on Calgary Puck who has broken stories in the past has stated that the the deal should be done within 48 hours as of yesterday. Take this as you will but this guy has a very good track record and well known on Calgary Puck. All signs seem to be pointing to this deal being done by the weekend.

Yup, I posted that here yesterday as well. And it goes along with what Elliotte Freidman and Dreger have said as well.

No doubt in my mind that Johnny doesn't miss a single game

Oh I didn't see it, yes I don't think Brad goes to NYC unless they are very close. Wouldn't surprise me if the major details are already decided.

I guess the agent can't lie to the media anymore and claim Treliving won't talk to him, lol

Now there's a panic. Treliving (Cough - Burkie) has had all summer to get this done.

Don't see it as "panic". I'd bet their getting into the nitty gritty and the trip is to close the deal before the weekend.
