Well we don't really know that yet and do you really think Bennett is gonna toss Monahan from top spot and then outproduce Gaudreau? If he does that's a good problem to have. If he takes 8 year term for less than 7 mill a year I'll be impressed by the negotiations and say this was worth it.

Well he won't outproduce Gaudreau. I was just pointing out that as a team you may not want to play favourites and just give one player what he wants as you might have another core player coming up and asking "why can't I get what I ask for?"

Not saying Bennett will ask for $8+ mill but when it comes time to negotiate you'll want to treat each player the same.

Going to be interesting to see what happens here. Season starts next week. Calgary can be a playoff team, they're not that with Johnny Hockey out for any extended period of time.

You don't tho you have to pay them what they are worth. Ufa years and rfa years change something's up but everyone's different so you treat them different. They have been negotiating for over a year I'd hope unless they really waited till the last minute. And if he's asking for 8 it shouldn't be that hard to negotiate closer to 7 and that's pretty comparable to the percentage of cap 6 mill was back when all the oilers 1st overalls were signed

It is that hard, evidently. It's rumoured at least 8. We will see soon enough as Friedman suggested.

I suppose we traded Smyth over a dispute of like 200 grand. But if they bring him below 7 at 8 years it will of been a good negotiation. Less than that it seems like sort of a waste of time.

Less term will be more annoying to figure out but I do hope you sign him for 8 years.

Not sure who to believe. Elliotte Friedman said the two sides haven't talked for a month and here's Dreger saying the contract is imminent. Hoping it's the latter.

It takes all the effort of one click to open the link and read the tweet with Friedman saying,
"I think this gets done. I think it gets done before the season. I just can't tell you what the number is."

Didn't Elliotte say he thinks it gets done within a week?

Friedman only reported that's what the agent said, he didn't get a comment from Brad or anyone in the flames org saying it was true. Reports surfacing today are saying they should have a deal by the end of the week

For what it may or not be worth, this goes along with what Freidman and Dreger have both said

From a poster on CP
FYI.

The 'source' I cited earlier with the gap being over term, is expressing they also heard a deal is imminent. Hopefully within 48 hours. They had nothing to offer about term and/or dollars, but it will be done by the weekend.

All I can say is they do work for the team. And they aren't selling Pocket Dawgs.

I think we'll end up with a 6 year deal because Calgary wants to keep the AAV down. 6x7MM would be my bet.

If he's only going to get 7mil he should push for 4-5 years and go UFA when he has the chance.

I don't think that kind of term is even on the table from Calgary to be honest. But Calgary doesn't want to pay to get him to 7 or 8 years of term.

6 years is where this will end up. Book it.

Why do you say that?

Paying way more for rfa years vs ufa years. Would be better for him to go shorter for less tho cuz if he doesn't regress he could kill when he hits ufa. So yeah he should def push for 4 years.

If I thought Calgary was about ready for a cup run maybe the less term less money would be better but if he Improves or stays the same and the cap goes up his next contracts gonna be higher.

But if the economy recovers after 6 years at 7 mill. what if the caps 10 mill higher and it's all ufa years he could be getting a raise to 14 mill a year instead of 2 more at 8.

Makes sense. Thanks.

Yeah I'd agree it would be smarter for Calgary to pay him a little extra AAV to get the 8 years. If he goes 5 or 6 and taking him to UFA and he continues to produce top 10 in the league in points over that time then they're gonna have to pay him over 9M when that contracts up just to keep him. Looking at the contract Parise got, if Gaudreau kept up his current play and made it to UFA he could probably get closer to 10M if he wanted from somebody.

Realistically, based on what he's put up (stats wise) what his ask is, what similar player got (think terasenko), I could see both sides settling somewhere in the range of 4 yrs 7.25m aav (give or take a 100k). Pure speculation on my part, of course, but that's as close as I can see for term (cgy) and dollars (Johnny h) having a happy medium

4x7.5 makes sense. He can go UFA after that and cash in somewhere back east.

Some of you guys are nuts. There is zero chance he's over 6.75 for 6 years. 6.5M would probably be my max

Treliving would have to quit his job from the shame if he signed 7.5M x 4 years.
