If calgary is deadset on paying gaudreau less then gio then its going to be a short term deal and if G keeps playing at the same skill level calgary will really regret it in the future imo

You can look at this many ways, the agent, may have made a huge concession and the GM is making a goodwill gesture to go there and talk to the agent and hopefully drop by, Johnny's house, have a cup of tea, tell Johnny mom, that Johnny will be very happy in Calgary and fly out of there with Jonny.
