McKenzie: Last few days, #Flames' brass was meeting fc-2-fc w/ Gaudreau/Gross. "They've closed the gap, but it's still a considerable gap."

Hmmm considerable

If they really are trying to abuse the Group 1 RFA system in order to lowball him on a one-year offer sheet or take a long-term deal at well below market value, then they don't know how to treat their stars.

Negotiation is fine, but remember, this guy still has to make a decision about wanting to work with you in the future. He wouldn't be the first superstar to demand a trade.

I doubt its actually what's happening, but I'd be starting to get a little nervous if I was a Flames fan.

Yes because Doughty obviously has never forgiven the Kings for playing hardball and he missed regular season games if memory serves.

No way a group 1 RFA gets this kind of contract he's asking for.

He has no rights. Can't get offer sheeted can't go to arb.

His deal will set the bar for future 10.2(c) rfa's.

And to add on didn't flames gm say he wouldn't go over Gio and monahan money? He can't renig with a RFA with no rights.

I want to see this go up in flames...

Someone (Freidman?) said last week that because of the unique RFA situation, Treliving is under a lot of pressure around the league to overpay and set that precedent.

I thought it was the opposite. Why would they want him to overpay?

I believe it was on hockey central yesterday and today talking about it. He has no rights there's no reason for the flames to give in their demands. He either signs or sits out.

Sorry that's what I meant, he's under pressure to not overpay

Well I hope this gets settled soon. There are enough situations throughout the season that can cost a team a point or two and potentially a playoff spot, no need to add another.
Besides, he's fun to watch.

Agreed 100%

Agents are really pressing teams to pay these young players top dollar. With the league salary cap moving up so little year after year it's getting harder to maneuver rosters. Players with many years in the league are starting to get either underpaid or pushed out all together. It's not a young players right to play in the NHL is a privilege. They have to start getting tough on these agents and players.

The US TV deal is a bad deal now. It's not generating the income needed to raise the salary cap steadily to pay star vets top dollar compared to some of the mediocre players. Granted the NHL isn't as big as the other major sports in the US but the TV deal just doesn't keep up with the times. Bettman really messed up on the length of the current deal.

Players should probably negotiate their contracts to expire when the new TV deal is negotiated. They could end up losing out on millions of dollars trying to go for maximum term. Maybe Gaudreau should think more along this line of thinking.

Below 7 million AAV is not "well below market value". There isn't a single RFA winger signed to a second contract who has even hit/surpassed 7 million other than Tarasenko and Ovechkin (and the awful Vanek offer sheet), much less anywhere near 8 million.

I'm imagining the flames offered 6, and that's the offer right now, but when Johnny Hockey finally cracks and accepts it next week... ooops that's an expired offer and the offer drops to 5.5 which he signs.

Gonna be 5.5.

ovechkin back when he signed I bet it was worth higher than what 8 million is now.

But good lord I can't believe you guys signed Iginla for 7 mill a year when the cap was at 39 million !

18 percent of your cap and now you guys are being so cheap 8 mill is like 11 percent of your cap iginlas cap hit today would be almost 13 mill a year.

Oh and ovechkins cap hit was just under 19% of the cap ceiling when he signed his contract. The max being 20%
