ovechkin back when he signed I bet it was worth higher than what 8 million is now.

But good lord I can't believe you guys signed Iginla for 7 mill a year when the cap was at 39 million !

18 percent of your cap and now you guys are being so cheap 8 mill is like 11 percent of your cap iginlas cap hit today would be almost 13 mill a year.

Oh and ovechkins cap hit was just under 19% of the cap ceiling when he signed his contract. The max being 20%

Yeah, Ovechkin's cap hit under this season's cap would be $13,840,800.

Leverage. You get paid by what leverage you have. It's not being cheap, he's still gonna get the biggest contract ever for anyone in his situation.

Kind of right but you also left out that he signed an extension after the 2006-2007 season. The year's salary cap was $50.3 million. So closer to 14%.

I'd actually bet Gross wants at minimum 7.5, but there's a lot of pressure on Tre to keep it at 7 or just under.

Flames are only reportedly offering 6.4M on an 8 year deal. Insulting to be honest for a player of Gaudreau's calibre.

Huh? Says who. Freidman said that number, but it was most likely a starting point. Basically saying "If Gaudreau's camp wanted 8+, it's only because the Flames offered 6.4."

That's how negotiations work.

Isn't this just Gross' MO? He always seems to wait until the last second. Even when Calgary signed him the first time

He also went on to say that the Flames are getting pressured from around league to use Gaudreau's lack of leverage against him. The only reason a deal hasn't been signed yet is because the Flames are taking a ridiculous hardline stance against their best forward.

Ovechkin's contract was huge when he signed it (still is), and was a massive exception to the general structuring of NHL contracts since he had already won the Art Ross, Hart, Calder, Rocket, and Lester Pearson (now Ted Lindsay) trophies. He completely swept the NHL awards the year before he was re-signed. It was also like 15 years long. If Gaudreau had that same option and said he wanted to sign for 8 mil/15 years, then sure, the Flames would take it in a heartbeat. But that's not the case.

The Flames signed Iginla for 7 mil a year when he was in his late 20s, had spent time as arguably the best forward in the NHL, and had already been making 7 mil/year before the implementation of the cap. Completely different scenario from Gaudreau.

Why should the flames care about what the rest of the league thinks.

Yes, and from the sounds of it, the pressure is to have it around 7 if not just under. Which is a lot better than 6.4, give in and pay him 7.5+ and next thing you know we have Bennett sitting out to get 6.5+ etc. Leverage is the name of the game, no doubt in my mind the Flames are willing to give him 7.
