I don't understand how reading an article confirming Gaudreau's participation in the World Cup without a contract leads to trade talk.
There's absolutely nothing in the article suggesting anything of that sort.

It's August on HF

Gaudreau and Monahan will sign for 8 x 10.5 each, book it. They're basically Kane and Toews according to HF Boards, right?

Jets fans are trying to draw a parallel between their young number 4 dman with reasonably high upside's lack of contract (as an rfa) directly to the flames young top 5 winger in the league who's going to focus on a tournament.

No idea why they think the situation is connected but they are desperate to act as though "eastern fans" are going to lowball him because of his contract status.

Not all jets fans of course, just the really desperate ones who popped up in this thread right away for some reason.

I would look forward to seeing Hall skate into a corner with Lucic. Or Maroon. Or Kassian. Or Nurse.

Why would Hall do that? You try to get your top players best matches, we would then wait for McDavid to get on and when McBurger goes in the corner, all 5 guys on him with the cheese going out of McBurger

I'm sure after surviving in the division with Lucic, Maroon, and Kassian in the past, Hall will be simply terrified now.

Which means he will likely not be a training camp as players don't really ever come to camp without a contract...assuming its not done before the WC

You mean the fact that both teams young RFA's are unsigned? Or that they are considered to be major current and future core pieces of their teams? or the fact that they will be going to compete in the World Cup? Or the fact that other posters from other teams will make assumptions that the players doesn't want to sign with their respective team and make terrible proposals? Yeah not similar at all! :sarcasm:

Based on just a hunch, nothing else. But I could see these negotiations actually not going as well as expected. JG and Monahan are best buds and on the surface they are probably asking for the same $ figures. However I could see Calgary putting an almost 1.5 mil/year difference between them. So in order to get Gaudreau's ask down, they have to lower Monahans to set the precedence. But this would then cause severe friction in Monahans camp. I also think both guys are acting in unison to get best deals (not the extort the Flames, but to try and get most for their buddy)

Also for JG he is a bit older and his comparables do put him around the 7.5 mil mark. And in the very recent past weve seen the end of bridge deals and the start of big 2nd contracts. So my guess is JG gets 7.5, Monahan 7 (although Calgary is likely going for 6M or Barkovs 5.9)

I think this negotiation is a bit tricky given the nature of it and the situations of both guys

I hate to bring Oilers into this. But they had a very similar circumstance with Hall and Eberle back in the day. Eberle was coming off 76 point season, Hall was progressing well as a 1st overall pick. The silver lining with that situation is that only Skinner really set the bar at 5.5m for a 2nd contract. Hall and Eberle contracts really started the end of the bridge deals, and Seguin/Landy etc deals followed. But there was no real precedance for either to go off of. So it was a quick and painless contract talk. Overpay for Eberle, get a value deal for Hall, but in end theyll cancel eachother out.

For JG and Monahan they have substantial amount of comparables to go off of, which makes it trickier

Because he wants to get as much money for his services as possible, and the Flames would like to pay as little as possible?

Apparently he isn't really good at reading between the lines lol

Its clearly a ploy to push the Flames into speeding up negotiations...pretty sure both side want a contract done before training camp and WC

2022 Cup to Calgary

Gaudreau for 10.5 through age 30 and then should he choose to stik around, a discounted cap hit at ages 30-34 makes more financial sense than Kane for 10.5 through age 34

Whatever gets Gaudreau to an 8 year term is fine by me. Though I would prefer the Tarasenko deal.

Gaudreau at 10.5 makes no financial sense

If he gets injured during the WC it would nix his chance at a large contract wouldn't it? Doesn't seem like a good idea for anyone to go the the WC without a contract.

He can get insurance and pay personally, which hes doing. Although not sure how that works if he receives a long term injury that. How would you proof you COULD have earned X amount over 5 years if you didnt get injured.

Works for short term injuries. Can reimbursed for games missed
