Based on just a hunch, nothing else. But I could see these negotiations actually not going as well as expected. JG and Monahan are best buds and on the surface they are probably asking for the same $ figures. However I could see Calgary putting an almost 1.5 mil/year difference between them. So in order to get Gaudreau's ask down, they have to lower Monahans to set the precedence. But this would then cause severe friction in Monahans camp. I also think both guys are acting in unison to get best deals (not the extort the Flames, but to try and get most for their buddy)
Also for JG he is a bit older and his comparables do put him around the 7.5 mil mark. And in the very recent past weve seen the end of bridge deals and the start of big 2nd contracts. So my guess is JG gets 7.5, Monahan 7 (although Calgary is likely going for 6M or Barkovs 5.9)
I think this negotiation is a bit tricky given the nature of it and the situations of both guys
I hate to bring Oilers into this. But they had a very similar circumstance with Hall and Eberle back in the day. Eberle was coming off 76 point season, Hall was progressing well as a 1st overall pick. The silver lining with that situation is that only Skinner really set the bar at 5.5m for a 2nd contract. Hall and Eberle contracts really started the end of the bridge deals, and Seguin/Landy etc deals followed. But there was no real precedance for either to go off of. So it was a quick and painless contract talk. Overpay for Eberle, get a value deal for Hall, but in end theyll cancel eachother out.
For JG and Monahan they have substantial amount of comparables to go off of, which makes it trickier
