People are overreacting. We're still in the early stages of Matthews and Marner's careers. Marner just turned 24. Matthews turns 24 in September. Nylander just turned 25 and has finally figured it out this series. Let's give them another year

Also, I think people are underestimating how big of a loss Tavares is. Nobody works harder than him during a game

I think this excuse is okay when a young core can't make that final jump to win a cup.

These guys can't even win a series.

It's definitely right to stay calm and not overreact to these things but there's no excusing this performance if they lose in game 7. They're in the middle of their primes and can't even win round 1.

Toronto = Washington Capitals, 4 years before they won.

Matthews and Marner are Backstrom and Ovie, positionally reversed.

Matthews =Ovechkin but not as effective on the P.P
Marner = Backstrom but Marner hasn't got it done in the playoffs.

We all wanted Matthews and Marner to be Toews and Kane but honestly their just not those type of players.

But I still think 1 cup is possible with this group but it's going to take longer then the immediate success Chicago had.

Especially in a year when they have a supporting cast around them.

No excuses for the core this time. Marner especially needs to wear this.

Marner will never play on a cup winning team. He just doesn't have the makeup of a chamionship player. Furthermore no contending team wants him on their roster.

The Habs aren't exactly Crosby, Malkin and the Pens.

If we just SHOW UP ON TIME, there is no way we won't win.

Last few games we start off lethargic and only come charging once our backs are against the wall.

It's elimination now boys, leave it all on the ice, if you lose i doubt you see many of your brothers again, so win for them and J.T

I didn't watch game 7 in 2019, but I have a way different feeling about this one. I am going to watch and give them one last chance to grab me. I just don't feel like abandoning ship right now.

Marner is super frustrating but he's great on the PK and has electrifying creativity that I just think will eventually shine through in the playoffs... but yes, the fact it's taking years for him to figure it out is not fun which does negate his value. Their are many players I would prefer over him but we're not getting any of them and trading him for a lesser player is not the answer either.

Blame Matthew’s and Marner all you want but Hyman is a f***ing drag on that line! There’s no chemistry! He’s throws the line off! Blows my mind how after 6 games Keefe doesn’t change it up! Hyman looked great in the last 8 minutes with Engvall and Spezza and they produced the tying goal! When Willy moved up to the 1st they didn’t score but they generated some high danger chances. If he doesn’t make any changes to the first line for game 7 we’re done!

Last game was hard to stomach.

The consensus is we're the more skilled hockey team. But we can't get outworked. Montreal just looked a look hungrier and more dangerous every time they touched the puck. You can feel momentum swings in a game, and it felt like we were playing into a headwind.

Hyman is likely injured. I think he's playing injured at least 50% of the time.

They should move Mikheyev and Nylander up to the first line to play with Matthews. Marner drops to the fourth line.

I don’t get then why Keefe would play a injured Hyman on the 1st line and play him over 20 minutes a game. I think he played 24 minutes in his first game back in game 1!

Toronto Maple Leafs looking to turn the page ahead of Game 7 - TSN.ca

Toronto added grit, leadership and experience in hopes of rectifying the issues identified in past playoff failures. But it desperately needs more out of Marner and Matthews, especially with captain John Tavares out.

The dynamic duo put up gaudy offensive numbers in the 56-game regular season — Matthews won the Maurice (Rocket) Richard Trophy as the NHL's goal-scoring leader, while Marner was a point better than his linemate to sit fourth in the league. But they've combined to score just once in the playoffs.

The underlying numbers suggest they're doing their part. The puck just isn't going in.

The scoresheet, series ledger and eye test all suggest otherwise.

"We've got to make sure we're better," Marner said. "Nothing we can do now. Just got to make sure we're ready for Game 7."

"Look forward to it."

The Leafs are 11-1 all-time when leading a series 3-1 and 7-1 at home in Game 7. But it's hard to ignore the mounting pressure on a group that will face the toughest questions of their careers if Toronto once again fades feebly into the night.

"You have to ignore it," said head coach Sheldon Keefe, in the top job since partway through last season. "I don't think pressure has anything to do with it at this stage. I don't think that's a factor."

"The games have gotten harder, Montreal has played better and we haven't dealt with it."

......................

So does Toronto, but actions will be that matters.

"Don't worry about what the fans are saying," Foligno said of the message ahead of a Game 7 that could define this roster. "Sometimes this is what catapults you. It's hard for the fan base to hear right now but we are going to come and have the mindset that we're going to win a hockey game."

"With the odds, with this team ...that's what's going to get done."

They have one last chance.
