Game #7: Kings vs. Sabres - 10/23/14 Kings Beat The Sabres 2-0; ALL HAIL QUICK!

McNabb is progressing much the way that Muzzin did 2 yrs ago. I think in time he'll be a very reliable piece for our D. Winning with an unproven, mistake prone rookie in the lineup since the start of the season is actually a very good situation to be in. McNabb is as physical as advertised, he seems to have better hockey IQ than most were bashing him for and he's been trusted by Sutter and coaches to ride shotgun with Dewy for the last 5 games. He's a keeper. Great win, Quick is officially on Vezina watch.

That's the craziest part. We're yet to have our full defense in a game yet. Although I thought McNabb looked really good next to Greene. He's still prone to some lapses, but not needing to be the stay-at-home guy and having some freedom to roam as opposed to watching Doughty dance around the ice was a gift for McNabb. He lays some pretty big hits, which is nice to see.

Side note, I've done a 180 on Regehr. Man, he's mean to play against. Sabres players were shying away from him by the third period. Regeher - Martinez is a pretty good pairing, I hope we don't break that up if and/or when Slava gets back.

RR when healthy is a beast. Just ask Hemsky

I never understand why Sutter separates Brown and Kopitar...as unlikely as it seems considering how different their skill sets and play types are, those two have incredible chemistry. Brown/Kopi/King were ****ing phenomenal last night.

Whole team played great and Quick is killing it right now...

also...need the Voynov situation resolved...McNabb is...... highly unimpressive.

Am I watching a different McNabb than most people on here? He's gotten better & better with every game. He's been far from unimpressive.

I'm with you. He's coming along nicely. The one thing that's missing in action so far is his advertised booming slapshot. Only wristshots so far.

I agree. He got caught flat footed on 1 play... Other than that I didn't notice any glaring mistakes. His positioning seems good, his first pass is actually really good for a rookie. Only thing missing is getting his shot off. He struggled in the early preseason but got better and better

Once he gains more confidence, he can be another serviceable player.

Let's all remember how King, Pearson and Muzzin all looked when they first came up. It takes time to learn at the NHL level.

McNabb lays the boom on the bad guys, goes exploring up the ice, helps out on a scoring chance, looks to direct pucks to the net, and scrambles frantically back down the ice to help on D. Everything happens to him shift in shift out, and it is genuinely fun to watch.

Fully agree on McNabb. He's much more involved than I expected him to be at this stage, and is a very good two-way guy. I can understand why he was a Mitchell "replacement" but I use that term very lightly. Kind of a mean streak, too, which is nice. Was great to see him, as mentioned, take a bit of a more offensive role/puck carrying role while playing with Greene because honestly McNabb's first pass is as good as anyone else on our team. Yes, I mean that wholeheartedly.

And also concur on Regehr. HE looks better than he ever has in our jersey and he has just been murdering people night in and night out. It's fantastic. He looks like Regehr of 7 years ago.

I wonder just how banged up he's been the last couple years, even prior to getting shut down mid-playoffs. The summer seems to have done him wonders.

McNabb reminds me of Muzzin when he first came up, he's showing some serious potential and getting better every game. He'll be a solid 2nd pairing guy on the blueline for a long time.

i dunno...Im not convinced with McNabb....like i said im unimpressed by him. I wouldnt be surprised if he's one of those names that we say, "oh yea...i remember McNabb...what ever happened to him?". He hasnt left a bad taste in my mouth but he just doesnt seem to be anything special. I dunno...we'll see...

And I will say this, Buffalo is rebuilding the right way, they are going to be a scary team in the future.

I agree, you can see the start of something really special there.

That might be true but I don't know how you draw that conclusion after watching them last night. I was at the game and I can't ever remember seeing a team so completely outclassed. They were never really in any danger of scoring a goal and were completely manhandled in both zones. It was 2-0 but the game was never remotely that close. I was actually feeling sorry for them most of the game and was kind of rooting for them to score at the end.

McNabb has been steady. He had made far less mistakes than i expected.

Who set the expectation that McNabb was another Doughty?

I'd say the biggest drawback from McNabb so far has been his skating. He can't take as many chances in making aggressive plays if his skating isn't up to speed. It's something that he can work on (as that was also a big concern with Matt Greene early in his career), and with time he will hopefully get smarter in timing when to make the big hit or pinch. Sometimes he tries to do way too much out there.

Kings played well against the last place team...

Pearson/Carter/Toffoli still carrying the team.

Kopitar can score if he's put with someone that can make a pass... his 2 goals are almost identical... crash the crease and get a feed from Gaborik/Carter

Brown played well tonight... lets hope he can keep it up against some tougher competition in the next few games....

King maybe playing himself into a permanent fixture on the first line.

Had some 5v5 chances... couple of posts... No 5v5 goals against a last place team is still concerning...

Also have to wonder how long until Lombardi is forced into a trade... I know right... Would this be due to the complete lack of production of all but one line... or is there another issue that could force his hand.... Then the question is which path does Lombardi take going forward... All interesting questions.... :naughty:

which is a good sign for most bottom four d-men. If you don't notice them it means they're doing a good job.

LA never scores until playoff time. Plus we will have Gabby coming back. Way to early to even consider a trade.

Very much agree here. Spot on, but i'd add that if the last 5 games are any indication of Sutter's thoughts on his projections he could be a long term top pairing D man as well. This is another potential impact trade in the mold of JWill, Greene and Carter.

I think this might finally be the year that someone besides Kopitar leads the Kings in scoring.

No one did and neither did i. By special, i mean he doesnt seem to bring anything more than being another body on the ice.

I noticed him last night when he let whoever on the Oilers skate right around him. I know that happens and it was only once last night and he's young and still learning. Im just not impressed by his skill set so far. H's a great #8 d-man to having waiting in the wings but i'd soon rather have Schultz in the lineup over him. Schultz was fantastic again Anaheim last year in the playoffs.

Anyways...im not trying to be the leading proponent against McNabb. I hope he does well and changes my current opinion.

I shouldn't mess with people...

It isn't so much the scoring... but how long until Richards gets tired of playing on the 4th line... He did the work in the offseason... now with the Kings depth there may just not be space for him...

Did a quick look at the Kings games so far.... The lack of scoring outside of the 70's is concerning. It's early.. Gaborik is still out....
Again it's early, so standings will shift (low sample size)... like the Blues should improve from 24th... so

10th Sharks 4-0

21st Wild 1-2
24th Blues 0-0
25th Coyotes 2-3
27th Jets 1-4
26th Oilers 1-6
30th Buffalo 0-2

It's only around 7 games into the season, but the teams the Kings have played so far look to be struggling... maybe with the low number of games and having played the Kings could be a factor on messing with the numbers, but the Kings have yet to register a goal against a team in the top half of the league...

10 of their 16 goals have been in 2 games against the Jets/Oilers.

Bottom line, 5-1-1, when any reasonable person would've expected them to struggle out of the gate. Also, shocker, they struggle to score against Minnesota and St. Louis, two very good defensive teams.

You trying to win fantasy or hockey games?

Because you left out one very important fact when looking at the whole picture. They've given up 9 goals in 7 games.
