The window has a real chance too. Avs can still salvage it, but it isn’t going to be easy.

Still people dog piled me when I suggested the window could be short late summer and through the fall. Seeing it first hand here.

I wouldn’t say that. Nuke, Landeskog , Girard all being healthy to start the year would be a difference maker alone. Then you add Byram taking another step and adding weight to his frame. Those are things you should be able to count on. Then you tinker with the rest of the roster to make the pieces fit better than it has this year. Saying you’re guaranteed a worse team is a terrible way to attack an off-season.

I said it before, but the Avs inability to recognize their own franchise strengths and weaknesses plays a role into their struggles. During the Duchene era they kept thinking they had internal solutions for the defense, during this era they seem to think they already have the solution up front. In both cases it’s proven to be false.

I strongly believe they should have treated this contention period from MacK’s breakout to this season as all ins. They had 2 seasons there where they had significant cap space and did nothing with it. I’m just glad they managed to actually do something last year.

Nobody even knows if Landeskog will be healthy following his surgery let alone next season. You cannot bank on that.

MacKinnon is going to be making double the money next season, too. Manson is a year older. Compher/Rodrigues gone and likely replaced with worse players (even if Rodrigues stinks). Lack of NHL-ready prospects outside of J.L. Foudy who projects as a bottom six and more likely LOC type of player.

Shit is bleak. The Avs need to move on from one of Toews/Girard to help the forward corps and also need to move their 1st round pick for roster help.

Honestly, there's no way they can salvage it. Their depth is already garbage this year, and it'll get significantly worse. Mac is playing like the 2nd best player in the league, and he likely won't repeat that next year.

Now, they'll be a perennial playoff (or in contention) team for the next 3-4 years, but the day of being a slam dunk top 10 team are likely over.

CMac turned a powerhouse into a shiny turd in less then 6-7 months. Some magical stuff.
