There's nothing there. He's played like 150 NHL games and never done much. I don't think it's going to work, at least with the Avs.

Good thing we kept him until he completely tanked his trade value. Now we're stuck with an offensive winger that will max out at 40-50 points and is useless when he doesn't put up points.

Teams usually line-up around the block for that type of asset. Especially when they're getting paid 3-3.5 million a year.

You’re not getting top 6 (maybe even 9) players (Avs need a few) for under 2m without giving up many 1sts. Just not the reality of the situation.

Avs have 13m to build out the roster and resign Byram. Even if the Avs found 3 ERods, they likely couldn’t fill the roster.

They are in a desperate situation where they really need some prospects to take that next step, or they need to be willing to be aggressive to move out picks to acquire guys that are going to outplay their contracts

Luckily they're great at both drafting and developing prospects, and being hyper aggressive when the window is closing.

3rd option is making an unpopular core player trade to redistribute the cap hits and build the depth back up.

No matter the path/s, the Avs need to be more aggressive.

As much as I think he is a douche, this team's best shot next season is probably by moving assets for J.T Miller. Especially if Vancouver is willing to listen on him and doesn't expect a Byram caliber player in return.

The Avs have 5/6 of their top 6 forwards locked in for next season (assuming healthy Landeskog). They have all their 1st available for trade. Makar, Byram and Girard are all under the age of 25 which is not usually the age where Dmen peak. I’m certain they are giving a bridge to Byram with his injury history. Use Toews and draft capital to acquire a 2C. Use the rest of the cap space on players who are better fits for the bottom 6 than Newhook and Erod. Suddenly the team looks a lot better than this years version. It’s not as bleak as most think it’s going to be.

Gotta disagree with Bednar on this one. I don't think the Avs played ok at all.

Did I say that?
Dont be so negative.

The Oil just took out the Bruins at home
In a 7 game series the Bruins are going to massacre them when Hall and Foligno are back in and with Ullmark in net, Swayman played today.

Avs have 13.2m to at minimum sign 7 forwards and resign Byram. Byram even on a bridge is in the mid 4s. I’d you move Toews and draft picks to get a 2C, odds are very high you’re adding cap. We’re looking at 5-6 m to fill out the whole bottom 6, replace an every night defensemen, and likely resign Newhook. Next years team will have worse depth than this years. It’s pretty bleak.

Yeah I’ll have to just disagree with this take. Improving the top 6 doesn’t make a difference for you I guess. The bottom 6 is usually filled with guys that play a certain role. Fit matters. It will be a new look bottom 6 next year and you’ll have a hard time convincing me it’ll be worse than this years regardless how much money is spent on it.

Improving the top 6 has to happen, but rolling 2 4th or worse lines is going to hurt a lot. With your plan you’re also making the defense worse. This has been years in the making and pretty obvious.

We are rolling 2 4th lines now. That is my point. You can’t get lower than rock bottom. Losing Toews will hurt the D, but when he has games like he’s been having this year, I like the upgrade at 2C over Compher to more than offset that difference.

You say 2 4th lines now, and yeah that is their rough quality. The Avs wouldn’t be able to even pay half of them next season. It isn’t near rock bottom there. It can get a whole lot worse.

Bringin in JT Miller is like when Vince brought in the nWo.
Miller isn't the answer. Not at that cap hit. They have to find someone cheaper.

Friedman mentioned a couple times that Columbus has interest in Kevin Hayes. I wonder if a 3-team trade around him + Provorov, Jenner, and Girard/Toews + Newhook could work for all 3 teams?
