Post-Game Talk: Game 5

The PP has to convert. Cannot continue like this. That's the only way this team wins the next two. We're going to need at least 1PPG per game. 1 in the series isn't getting it done.

My real issue with him is he never adjusted the PP. Laf worked his ass off and became our best player at ES. He was apart of our best line all season. How did the coach reward him? With 15 seconds of PP a game next to likes of Wennberg and Kakko.

Meanwhile, a certain player went like 40 games without an ES goal. Our powerplay succeeded because of guys like Fox, Kreider, Panarin. Im convinced any player could get 50 PP points with that squad. Instead of changing it up, we had to watch him and awful 1 timer.

Then the playoffs came, and it struggled. Imagine if we just let Laf get the experience on the unit? I'd imagine it wouldve done better than 2/20.

And lets be honest. It's not going to change next season. The PP will remain the same. Mika will get hit 60-70 PP points. Meanwhile Laf's growth will be shafted. I doubt he stays here.
Zibanejads power play production isn’t even impressive at all. Without context it looks good but I’m 99% sure he’s underachieving what the left half wall player on that unit should be doing next to Panarin (maybe the best passer on earth), Fox (the other best passer in the world), Kreider (best net front guy), Trocheck (low key awesome bumper player who is extremely versatile). He does nothing to improve that unit other than basic simple plays that any fine offensive player could make. As soon as the good PKs show up in the playoffs he’s the clear weak link that sucks on entries and is a turnover machine under pressure. If he still made plays it would be acceptable but he doesn’t, he can’t improve the condition of the puck at all and just funnels it back to the other guys who are tasked with creating. Lafreniere can finish and also make the other players better and is red hot. WTF are they doing? Why are they convinced that this unit can’t be tweaked because it did a good job of clapping the Ducks in December

I know I'm not being clear-headed here out of frustration but I really think if this series is over on Sat it'll sting me more than 2014 did

2015 stung more for me than 2014 tbh. I just never thought they could beat LAK.

2022 stung like 2014 in the sense that I never expected them to get that far. Of course it stung that they lost, but it's different when my expectation was low.

I thought 2015 was gonna be our year and then our entire team got destroyed with injuries. That G7 vs TB still is brutal. 2024 is gonna be more like 2015 for me if this ends tomorrow.

I don't know if any of that makes sense.

The refs have swallowed their whistles in elimination games all playoffs. I understand scoring on the 1 or 2 opportunities we're given can be very important, but we can't expect any more PP opportunities more than that going forward.

We need to win 5v5.

It does. It goes with the territory of being a Ranger fan. I've been at this since 1979.

Pure horseshit redux.

Every team is driven.

To get to the final four, you're very driven.

The same fans who say this guy sucks or that guy sucks and then question their effort are contradicting themselves and are just bitter that reality doesn't match what they want.
You can say horseshit all you want, but if you don't see a difference in the Rangers from the 4 games vs the Caps and the first 2 games vs the Canes to the series vs the Panthers you need an eye exam...

Lets look at this in an extremely basic way. What happens in the 2nd half of the game esp the 3rd period (specifically vs fla) is they get on their forecheck and sometimes 10 min goes by before we take a shot. So this falls mainly on the defense that theyre not effective at clearing the puck.

The criticism that Mika and (Artemi and CK to lesser degree) arent getting quality shots is valid due to they do a lot of passing and circling from afar before shooting, they dont charge in and mix it up. Trochek, Lafi, Goodrow they do get in there, get physical, and get closer, so they have some success.

In order to win we need a) clear the puck and dont turn it over on the passes, this falls mainly on the defense b) Mika and Artemi have to get more aggressive and shoot from closer in c) even if all our offense doesnt change but we clear the puck and get a shot count equal to fla's and deny them the forecheck for long periods we can still win. C) is basically what we seem to do in the 1st periods then by the third period fla is dominating again.

They need to just try harder and get desperate. Increase their stamina and will to hustle. Deny them the forecheck. Play aggressive, hit them hard and often. Shoot the damn puck, a lot. We get our shot count up we can win. Can we win 2 in a row? Anything is possible.

His slap shot wind up is a caricature now. He needs a wrist shot. A deadly one. Or charge the freakin net. Anything besides that ridiculous wind up.

I spent most of today thinking about off-season moves to get this team to the top, but F*** that. I can do that if/when they are ACTUALLY eliminated. The Panthers definitely have some studs, definitely have the edge in play for most of the series, but it's 3-2 and the last 4 games have been decided by 1 goal (and Game 1 was a 1 goal game with 4 minutes left), and the Panthers are not the 80s Oilers.

They've done virtually nothing either at 5v5. Stay out of the box, find a way to get one (or more) on the PP, and let Igor do his thing. Mika, Bread, Kreider all have more to give. It's not out of the question one or more of them come up big tomorrow.

This same core ("that's not good enough to get it done") was also dead down 3-1 vs Pittsburgh in 2022 after allowing 14 goals in 2 games. They were also dead against Carolina in the following round and then put a WHOOPING on them in Game 7 in their building. And of course, we were dead in Game 6 two weeks ago, until we weren't. Entirely possible, maybe even likely that the season ends tomorrow, but I'll have 4 months to be upset about it, until next season rolls around. For now, I'm looking forward to beating the odds and watching this team play in the Stanley Cup next week.
