Post-Game Talk: Game 5

Laf played 16:25 tonight, Wennberg played 15:19 , who is running the bench?

Before anyone yells Wennberg kills penalties, he played 37 seconds on the PK tonight.

Can you at least go out with your top 6 playing over 20 minutes each line on Saturday night?
And this is why I am down on Lavy in this series. He has been outcoached. Laf has arguably been this teams best skater and he gets 16 minutes in a do or die game after getting 14 minutes in the last game? How? He also thought Miller-Trouba was a good idea for much of this series. He just refuses to make ballsy changes like putting Laf on PP1 instead of Mika who does nothing on a PP that has scored 1 goal. What is he waiting for? Next pre season? It's extremely disappointing.

Honestly? If I were to choose one player that puts that core over this one is Zubov. I know Leetch is better but we have Fox (albeit injured but if we're talking hypotheticals a healthy Fox is elite), I know Messier is better but we have good forward depth even though Mika sucks 5 on 5. Graves...Kreider, Kovalev...Lafreniere. There is absolutely no one in the same universe as Zubov on this team other than a healthy Fox.

Leetch was the better skater. Leetch also could hit.

Carolina and Florida are 2 of the very best teams in the league. You can't expect him to stop every shot these teams throw at him. He has been the best goalie in the playoffs AINEC. He is not going to be perfect. He is the LEAST of the Rangers problems.

I don't expect him to do it every night. I expect him to do it once per series. For one game per series will the team to a win and allow less than 2 goals.

Maybe his heroic performance was game 3; he still let in *checks notes* 4 goals

Mika is not going to the middle of the ice or driving the net. He has more important things going on than hockey and that's fine I guess.
It is what it is.
The guy gets occasional slot chances and passes to the wing. Vesey and Goodrow passing the puck back on breakaways. I've seen things that can't be unseen.

No need to rebuild. We can fairly easily reload in July 2025. That offseason we move Trouba, Kreider, Goodrow, Kakko and we go after draisaitl and rantenen.

Laff-Draisaitl-Perreault
Panarin-Trocheck-Rantennen
Cuylle-Mika-Chytil
Othmann-Rempe-Edstrom
13th vet at league min

Kandre-Fox
Jones-Schneider
Lindy-bottom pair RD
7th D at league min

Igor
Backup

And yes, this is cap compliant
Three forward studs from Hahtfid but no D? Wherefore Robertson?!?!?! /jk

Show us your cap math because there’s no way

Of course there’s more to it, there’s goaltending. And ST can carry you, until it can’t anymore. I thought the team played fine against Carolina. But they just have Carolina’s number and know how to play against them. But every other series has been the Rangers getting f***ed up time and time again. Pittsburgh series which was basically the last 3 games but for a full series, NJ skating circles around them, and now their series. Even Washington should have been a wake up call. The rangers should have been all over them and it was a struggle. I’m sorry but I’m not going to put it all on the bottom-6 when two years ago it was the kid line who were the only ones who could get the puck past the red line, last year no one played well. And this year it’s been mostly Laf and Trocheck. The Rangers need an upgrade on Zibanejad, a legitimate 1st line RW and LW and to move Kreider down in the lineup so he can feast on easier matchups. When Kreider-Chytil-Whoever is the 3rd line then we might have the ability to get over the hump. Until then forget it.
Well good luck getting two first liners.

I could be convinced on Zibanejad if there's some way to make it work. It's more that I don't think it's realistic than being particularly married to him being here.

I think Kreider would still be effective if his center wasn't a non-factor at 5v5.

I also think this forward corps would improve more than you think if we had an NHL defense corps. They don't sustain pressure or get the puck to good areas, I get that, but they also never receive good passes, have to be in their own zone for minutes at a time constantly, and outside of Fox when he's healthy, the blueline is a revolving door for opponents attempting an exit.

That's kind of my mindset. The defense is such ass that I don't think the forward corps is that far off considering what they're saddled with.

I think they need decent complimentary players who can fill roles on these lines more so than they need an entire first line. We knew the holes were there. Roslovic and Wennberg added absolutely nothing that this group needs help with.

Did you even notice that (even in the regular season) Laviolette routinely put two centers on defensive faceoffs, and sometimes in other situations too?

Yea, and it's stupid, they are worried about a center being thrown out of the face-off, deal with it if it happens.

These guys should be out there Saturday until they can't stand, win or lose, go out with your best.

Rempe absolutely has to be out especially on the road. Would love to see Jones. Not gonna happen. Maybe Wheeler for Roslo? But I can understand Kakko out at this point. He's zero threat to score.

I highly suspect we will see 7 D for game 6. Jones in, Rempe out

The problem is that Panarin and Zibanejad don’t go to the middle of the ice unless there’s space. Full stop. If that changes Saturday we’ll win, if not we won’t.
Same as its always been. Your best guys gotta be your best guys and not act like the basic structure of the sport doesn't apply to them.

Mika/Kreider and Fox/Lindgren divorces need to be the orgs top in house priority. They will never succeed 5v5 with this combinations written in stone. Also it’s Laffy’s team now let him have it.
I'm definitely on board with splitting them up. Together they are

1) Stale

2) Were really only ever great with Buchnevich

3) Don't really have complimentary skill sets.

And 4) Kreider-Trocheck would be absolutely impossible to play against.

First elimination game comes in game 6 of the Eastern Conference Final. Come on boys we can’t give up just yet. This shit ain’t supposed to be easy. You have to think we play our best game on Saturday. We haven’t seen this team play a truely desperate game yet
Thank god there was no “internet” in 1994

All I'm saying is that worse Rangers teams have come back from 3-1 deficits. That 2014 Rangers team looked more lost than this 2024 team down 3-1 against Shitsburgh. This is not over.

St. Louis mother dies. What does the team do? They go attend the funeral as a team...and proceed to bury the Penguins.

That series was more meaningful than the Canadiens, even though we made it to the finals.
