I just seen the third period so tbh it was alot of the same for me but I'm always happy they win. I didn't get to see all the goal scoring. My fault though for tuning out.

Like too complex, too nuanced, too different or something.

It's just one game, but they looked totally different today.

Outshot the opponent most of the game too. Can't remember the last time that has happened — and was the most telling to me that Lalonde was terrible. Getting outshoot 2:1 (or more) was typical, not an exaggeration.

My oversimplified view is it seems like Lalonde's intention was to reduce the Goals Against and in doing so he completely neutered the offense so it made it even harder to defend.

So did Washington win the Vrana trade for Mantha now?

Already mentioned but Buch and Cossa. Fact of the matter is, both players went UFA so it was a rather inconsequential trade as far as those 2 players are concerned. Red Wings got 2 picks so that's the difference.

In due time. Winning one fight isn't enough. Let him get some more experience fighting in the AHL. They can send Motte down near the end of the season to bring Mazur or Elmer up.

funny thing is that is not us playing good hockey it is Washington being very bad.

I'm getting the feeling that he micromanaged players too much and stifled all creativity and offensive output. Those kind of coaches don't get a second chance. Adam Oates almost ruined Holtby by micromanaging how to play goalie. Oates never got a second chance.

Ed would have had another couple min but he has the delay of game penalty and then the soft late penalty. Probably would have been around 24 otherwise.

Based on what I saw in the 3rd there's still some running around in their own end for sure. It's gonna take a bit to clean that up.

But the puck support, zone exits and offensive zone possession all looked better.

First was fun to watch.
As to the third, they were holding the lead against a team that is really really good in the third and needed to score. Difference was they were actually spending time in the O zone and trying to score, so the Caps couldn't cheat for offense quite as much as the old turtle shell would have allowed.

Veleno has 5 points in 7 games. In addition he hit the post on the inside in the game vs the blues. It was the closest we got in the game where we didn't score any and obviously got shutout.
I am glad the new coach recognised this.

Tarasenko had 2 good plays in 3rd, getting the puck out of the zone and blocking the shot.

I think Todd understands that he doesn't have the dmen to straight trap here at the moment. I love Ed/Seider together but it meant you played the other 35 minutes with no dmen that could complete a consistent breakout pass or play with higher panic threshold.

If you split up Ed/Seider and play a heavy pressure/ forecheck system for the forwards you have a better overall defensive and offensive setup for this group.

I think we saw that today. Even at the end we still had 2 forwards up pressuring the Wash breakouts. This team is too small and too weak at D to just let teams easily enter our zone.

Seider is about to pop off. We are about to see the creativity and physicality of his rookie year with 3 years experience.

The 2nd line looked solid? Kasper feels wasted where he is, and I'm completely cover Tarasenko. Rasmussen has more value as a trade piece. Complete the deal that ships him out to BUF or CGY or whatever. Give me:

Berggren - Kasper - Compher
Fisher - Motte - Watson
