Landeskog would be nice

He'd be the one I want.

Kings aren't trading a d-man before the expansion draft anyways. Say you trade Muzzin + whatever for Landeskog. Kings protect Kopitar, Carter, Toffoli, Pearson, Landeskog, Dowd, whoever, Doughty, Martinez, Forbort. Vegas takes McNabb.

Your defense for 2017-18 would be:
Forbort-Doughty
Martinez-Greene,
Gravel-?
?

That's a pretty bad defense. Kings would be right up against the cap so they'd have to sign veterans for $1 million or less or promote LaDue, MacDermid, whoever. Since the Kings are built on the backend out, Dean isn't risking losing 2 young/good d-men before the start of next season.

Yeah that D looks pretty thin, you'd be better off trading Mcnabb for a younger lesser expansion exempt dman rather than lose him for nothing. Its a shame Forbort and Dowd shined this year and not next.

That's for sure. It's something that you'd basically be giving up TWO assets for one, Muzzin + (Forbort/McNabb next year) for Landeskog. Though I admit it's hard not to drool at

Landeskog-Kopitar-Gaborik
Pearson-Carter-Toffoli
Brown-Dowd-Setoguchi

I had the thought where we did something like that but got Barrie as well to get a RHD but in any case it's a tough year to be making trades since going 'all in' would mean hurting next year even more than usual and I don't think we're in the situation to do that now. But I can imagine DL sees a little bit of the team he saw when he traded for Sekera--let's get these guys some help to get over the hump--so I wonder how long he can contain himself

Horde Defenders, they are hard to come by. Ladue is not a sure thing, just look how Kempe is struggling mighty this season in AHL. Gravel is steady, but we haven't seen Gravel face tougher minutes, or better forwards. Muzzin is a sure thing, bonifide #2-3 Defender on a good contract. He is just playing bad atm, but like Kopitar, he will turn it around.

Look how long it took to replace Slava/Mitchell, lets not forget that.

I would definitely NOT give up a defenseman for a winger, I don't care if it is Landeskog. To echo the sentiments of dam, Muzzin would be much harder to replace than a scoring winger. Now I would consider Muzzin + for someone like Duchene or MacKinnon, though I highly doubt we deal with Colorado...

Do nothing, and they probably lose one of Dowd/Forbort/McNabb, depending on the protection arrangement. Dowd or Forbort maybe the most probable of the 3.

Sake of argument, there's a Landeskog(or whoever from whatever team) for Muzzin deal out there. If they did something like that, they could keep Dowd and Forbort, and then probably lose McNabb.

Those aren't the only options available, but on the one hand, it's trading a top 4 defenseman for a top 2 line winger and losing a potential top 4 defenseman for nothing. On the other hand, it's losing either a so far top 3 center or what seems to be a potential top 4 defenseman for nothing.

The Kings aren't getting out of the expansion draft without a scar or two either way. Not only the Dowd/Forbort/McNabb question, but then they're not going to be able to dump Brown or Gaborik onto Vegas. Lombardi is in a situation where it's trying to minimize the loss as best you can.

this this and this. the quality of defense has been a huge issue for this team since Slava was deported , the Kings got really lucky that Forbort has been able to slot into the top pairing and hold his own. McNabb and Dowd are both studs in their own right but Id rather lose one of those two than Forbort. he's so much smarter than I expected and Im really excited to see how he continues to develop. I dont like the idea of trading Muzzin away even though he's struggling a bit...we all know how good he is when he's on his game

If it were for Muzzin, I think Colorado is listening. Prime experienced top-pairing LHD locked up for cheap for a long time looks good next to the top-pairing RHD they have when the biggest issue they have is defense.

Like I said, I probably don't do it, but it's one of the best deals I've heard for Muzzin.

Yep. only good thing is if you look around the league, other teams are worse off than us and will be scarred worse, particularly with the plethora of NTC/NMCs and other things. Hell, Chicago last I checked doesn't even have a choice of who to protect, it's decided for them IIRC.

Ducks are another team that's in a bad spot. Buyout Bieksa and have his 35+ cap hit of $4 million on the books next year or lose Silfverberg to Vegas? Pretty easy decision but that $4 million in dead cap space will hurt.

Or they get extremely, extremely lucky and Bieksa agrees to waive his NMC and be exposed since Vegas definitely isn't picking him anyways.

Greene/Gilbert are the next to go with mcnabb coming back. Unless they keep both and send gravel back down. Maybe we can get something for Gilbert?

Someone on LAKI mentioned Gravel is no longer expansion draft exempt if he plays 40 NHL games this season. Not sure if that's true or not but if it is, Gravel won't see too many more NHL games this season (at 20 right now). He's certainly getting sent down when McNabb is back just to be able to keep everyone but he won't be back up for a long time unless injuries necessitate it.

Kinda makes me wonder if we'll see some trades around the league at the 42 game mark, haha.

I wouldn't do this but i.e. trade King, call up Mersch
