It's like hiring the school bully to be hall monitor

Way off topic, but in high school, the assistant principal was a burly Italian named Bruno Marana. He scared the shit out of kids and there were rumors, definitely unfounded, about his past.

My cousin was also my best friend in high school and we came from the same Italian grand parents. Bruno loved us because he knew our family and never bothered us when we roamed the halls when we shouldn't have been and even stopped and chatted with us.

One day, we're walking down the hall and he screams at us: "you two, get your ass in my office" and we were like "what the hell?"

We get in his office and he says "Sorry guys, some other kid saw you so I had to act like you were in trouble. Hang out in my office for 5 min. and then get back to class."

Watched the Kraken broadcast this morning.

Great PQ, ads not bothersome, score is posted in upper left leaving lots of non-intrusive hockey viewing, Forslund-Olczyk combo are superb (plus they have a guy between the benches in JT brown) and a good analytical in-between period team discussion.

Worth a watch if you have the ESPN package.
I watched the 3rd period with these guys, I agree that forslund/olczyk were superb, what you would expect from two of the best, JT was minor league compared to those two. He kept going on about how the canes D would lay back with a big lead, Jon told him that it’s just not in their dna (nice talk for STFU), but he kept bringing it up all period. Other than that, it was quite enjoyable, class comes through.

The Athletic has a class of 2020 redraft article. Jarvis jumps from 13th to 4th and Nikishin goes from 69 (I see it) all the way up to 19th, in their "Tier 3".

"Nikishin may be the most fascinating player in this group. He has all the tools of a future top-four defenseman and is playing great in the KHL this season but has signed a deal through the 2024-25 KHL season."

edit: oops, meant to post this in the other thread. I'll put it there, mods feel free to delete here if appropriate.

Here's what I've learned so far this year.

I have really gotten used to the condensed schedules of the last 2 seasons and having this few games so far is driving me nuts. It feels like there should be a game tonight and there's not. I'm excited hockey is back but this feels like waking up on Christmas morning and only being allowed to open one present every 2 hours. It's like, yeah, there's presents, and yeah, that rocks. But give me more.

Yea, last year especially was basically a game every other night...we're a week into the season and only played 3 games. Made worse by the fact that 2 were so late many of us couldn't watch them live

My definition of an overpay was a bit of a stretch, but I meant a 2nd instead of a 3rd. :P Canes always take interesting 2nd round fliers, though, so it isn't nothing.
Yeah, I was just messing with you. I still find it hard to believe that anybody is going to give us anything higher than a 4th round pick for Bear.....no matter handedness.

It wasn't too long ago that by the time we had completed the state fair road trip, our season was already over. I admit this is year five of successful hockey and there is still a tiny part of me, that gets smaller each year, is like when is the rug going to be pulled out from under us. But it's not. We are a legitimately great team and we have the opportunity to be good for a really long while. So that apprehensive part of me, STFU and enjoy.

I feel like this team is good enough that I wouldn’t be too worried if they were to be under .500 after this trip. Edmonton and Calgary are good teams and anything can happen this early in the season. Saying that, I’d be worried if they played like dog shit and not to the standard we expect from a Rod coached team the rest of the trip.

It’s an adjustment the fan base has to make and an adjustment I’ve had to make as a fan. When you’re not actually concerned about making the playoffs, and the name of the game isn’t just eking out enough wins to sneak into a wildcard spot, the regular season stops being about “did we win?” and starts being about “how did we play?” “Did we win?” helps to answer the question of whether we will make the playoffs (which almost everyone agrees we will). “How did we play?” helps to answer the question of how far we will go in said playoffs and beyond. “How did Jarvis play?” answers the question of whether we have a future top line winger for the next 8-10 years. “How did Chatfield play?” helps answer whether our bottom pair can handle tough playoff minutes, etc. Each game stops being about the final score and starts becoming a little window into how well the front office is doing at build a perennial contender. It’s still fun to win games, don’t get me wrong, but this other thing where we are assessing how good we really are instead of praying we “fake” our way to the playoffs is way more fun.

I'll admit, I loved being the "underdog" game in and game out. There was something almost akin to catharsis when we won or even started to climb the standings, ultimately ending up 9th or 10th.....a couple of spots out of the playoffs. Hope springs eternal. Now I have a slight bit of nervousness that we'll under-achieve. I guess that's the paranoia of being a fan of a good team.
