Watched the Kraken broadcast this morning.

Great PQ, ads not bothersome, score is posted in upper left leaving lots of non-intrusive hockey viewing, Forslund-Olczyk combo are superb (plus they have a guy between the benches in JT brown) and a good analytical in-between period team discussion.

Worth a watch if you have the ESPN package.

Brown didn't really work beside JF. Was knowledgeable but his presentation was poor. He's better where he is now.

I hope the league takes a good look at that hit on Jarvis
Got a vid / GIF of it? No thread on the main board though, and against a Cane, so I doubt they look. They didn't last year, they didn't when Zads took out Turbo away from the play a couple years ago

yeah Tripp was really pissed about that hit, I think rightfully so. Prob not suspension worthy but should've been a penalty for elbowing
Yea, Jarvis was puck-watching a bit but that is 100% clearly intended to be a head-targeting hit...after Jarvis tosses the puck Soucy just stops and throws his whole body/arm upward right to Jarvy's head. Should probably be a fine at least

In the Shanahan era at DoPS that absoultuely would have been a suspension. It's astounding to me that the NHL has actually taken a step back on combating headshots.

When the head of player safety also has a clothing line selling merch with the slogan “make hockey violent again” it’s not that astounding.

From what I can see on that GIF, I think this hit was both elbowing AND an illegal check to the head. With the way the NHL has written 48.1, it's the type of hit they are trying to eliminate.

In addition to the head having to be the main point of contact, the question of "if it was avoidable" comes down to the 3 items below in italics. The first item applies here. The Kraken player didn't try to hit squarely though the body and definitely had an unnecessary extension of his body, and elbow, upward and outward. And from that GIF, it looks like the head was picked as it was the only point of contact.

I defended the Trouba hit which some disagreed with and while I'm not going to debate that again, nor am I trying to change anyone's mind on it, I'll explain why I see this one differently. Trouba kept his elbow tucked, didn't jump into the hit, didn't change directions at the last second and hit squarely through Jarvis's body contacting both his head and his chest. None of those things apply to this hit IMO. The Kraken player had Jarvis lined up and could have easily kept his elbow in and delivered a legal bone crushing check to Jarvis without throwing his elbow up and out towards the head.

Thankfully Jarvis wasn't hurt. Hopefully he learns also to not puck watch in that location because Soucy could have cleaned his clock legally if he had so chosen.

(i) Whether the player attempted to hit squarely through the opponent’s body and the head was not “picked” as a result of poor timing, poor angle of approach, or unnecessary extension of the body upward or outward.

(ii) Whether the opponent put himself in a vulnerable position by assuming a posture that made head contact on an otherwise full body check unavoidable.

(iii) Whether the opponent materially changed the position of his body or head immediately prior to or simultaneously with the hit in a way that significantly contributed to the head contact.

Ftfy.

The league doesn't really want to see young star players being targeted with hits to the head. There's a reason why shit like these hits and the Trouba chicken wings have made their way back in more frequently since Shanahan left the position.

I mean FFS, Kuznetsov only got one game for literally doing a deliberate two-handed swing to the face of a player then shoving him while they're down. He had to go after the Wilson incident in New York two years ago, now it's just to the point of parody

Speaking of awful Jim Benning decisions, non-tendering Chatfield is comparatively small potatoes but still clearly shows the bad pro scouting that led to Vancouver running their current joke of a right defensive side. Vancouver's new FO will very likely have to overpay for Ethan Bear or some other RHD to get out of that self-made problem, and because Carolina is one of a select few teams that both has a RHD surplus and has no cap issues, they can actually ask for a significant return.

Meh, when the NHL employs him, signs off on his rulings, and refuses to discipline him, I don't care what the NHL says, they want the violence
