To add to this he also said that he had other offers but felt Columbus gave him the best opportunity to have a bounce back season.

Right now I am just hoping he likes it here so much he doesn't want to leave. Many of the ex-players keep houses in town because the weather is good & we have some of the best golf courses in the world. Fingers crossed Sam has so much fun playing for Columbus he signs on for a while.

I listened to the game on radio and watched on TV. Really liked what Andrew Cassels brought to the broadcast. I hope that they make him a regular. It always adds when you have an articulate former player as the color analyst. Jody does a great job on TV. Hope Cassels or someone like him is on the radio feed from now on. Also love Ryan Mitchell does a great job as well. Really sounds like a professional broadcast

I couldn't watch tonight so I don't know how Cassels did, but I'd say that Jody is best as a third guy between the benches. When he's the second guy, and it's just him and Rimer, he's not as sharp. But I guess they don't want to pay for three?

Rimer "Blue Jackets back into the win column here!" Lol.

Old habits die hard

Robert, good to read your posts again. What has you living in Louisville? Did you retire there or buy a Papa Johns? JK,

It has been a whole lot of fun watching this team, everyone gets along better when the team is winning!!

From Portzline's chat from last week.

Really curious about your thoughts on Gagne and his future. He isn't the oldest guy but with the recent youth movement within the organization, where do you see this going? He's producing probably more than expected but I'm not convinced they'd give him a LT deal, and I don't think he'd accept another 1-year deal. Sign him, trade him?

Portzline: If I'm a Blue Jackets fan, I'm in enjoy-it-while-it-lasts mode. And who knows, it could turn into a long-term relationship. That just seems unlikely. The niche he's found is really interesting to me, and it's been really successful. He's a fourth liner at ES play, but he has a big role on the power play and he moves up in the lineup frequently. I'm not sure the Blue Jackets see a different role for him if you look down the road even a little bit, and he's going to price himself out of his current spot pretty quickly. This could just be a one-year romance in Paris and everybody's happy, though a touch bittersweet. Reminds me of Jason Williams in 2008-09 with the Blue Jackets, though that was a trade and a half-season impact.

My thoughts....
Only reason he took a cheap contract was because I'm assuming he wasn't get any offers after he struggled in Philly. Now that he is showing he is still capable of playing in the NHL his contract demand will go up. Do we want to pay a lot for him to be on the 4th line(plus PP)? What if he struggles next season? Then you have a overpaid 4th liner. Interesting to see if Jarmo wants him back and if Gagner only would ask for a slight raise because he found a team where he fits in nicely.

Thats not gonna happen until after the Fiesta Bowl unfortunately. Getting people my age to go to a game is almost excruciating.

"Wait we're actually good?"

People have been fooled by this team before. They still only have 2 postseason wins in their history. The bump up in attendance will happen if this team keeps winning, but it's not going to happen quickly.

Bad thing is the STH also have had the opportunity to buy cheap tickets to many of these games ($30 lowers, $15 uppers).

Good news is if you look at the home schedule rest of way (December) there will be a lot of good matchups with high profile teams, some of the crowds will be opposing fans, but the big matchups will help.

That's why I was told free food night was so early - they wanted to do it before x-mas and at a game that was not a marquee matchup.

Interesting comment - the other day I was thinking about the comparison between Jason Williams and Gagner. Both came in on the relative cheap, provided a kick-start to the offense, and contributed on special teams (power play, shootout).

Gagner is basically playing for the league minimum this year and will be looking to cash in on a more secure contract in the off-season. Guys like him and Jason Williams are great to have on the team when they are cheap, not so much when they are paid like a top 6 liner. Gagner has to take care of himself, so I don't begrudge him looking for a payday. I expect him to be gone at season's end. I'd rather the CBJ use the money to see if they can get Cam to an extension.

I agree. Gagner is the kind of guy that, at 650k, is the difference maker a playoff contender needs in the salary cap world. But once he goes looking for a payday this summer we need to just tell him "thanks for all you've done, and good luck, Sam".

I was at the Caps game last night. There were a lot of empty seats at the Verizon Center, too.

EDIT: Interesting - just looked this up and it was supposedly a sellout crowd. Definitely had more than 11,000, but it was also definitely not 18,000...

I think it is a waste of time to worry about attendance now. First, potential fans are still in a "show me" mood. If Jackets are still near the top of the league at the beginning of February, attendance will jump for the last two months.

Second, along that same timeline, Columbus fans are still focused upon football until the Bucks finish their run whenever that is. Then a few Steelers fans may still be watching football in late January. but, after that, the eyes of sports fans will turn to hockey if the Jackets remain relevant in the Metro.

Yep, I imagine the band-wagon will start to fill again as the calendar hits 2017, if the Jackets keep the current pace.

I'm sick of hearing about attendance.

The market is what it is.

If 11k on a Monday night "isn't good enough", then they can move the team, but they won't because Franklin Co. and Nationwide subsidize the team to keep it from losing money.

To clarify: Shelly was still on TV, between the benches. I listened on the radio, where Cassells joined McElliott as the color analyst

Btw....attendance tonight, 11,345........

Monday or not....Not good enough for the top 5th team in the NHL...

Reunion? Not without Dr. Fire!

As far as our broadcasters go, our original TV pair is still my favorite. I did like Gare while he was here.

I remember an HF get together at the RBar I went to. Sad thing is, I can't remember everyone that I met, but I think you were one, Robert. One of our posters from Europe somewhere came to town and we met up with him. Can't remember who that was either. Hell getting old!

As to the game.

First period had me a little worried, but after the Yotes goal the CBJ seemed to come to life.

Better second then we have seen for a while.

Third is what we are getting used to seeing.

Was impressed with some of the Yotes young guys. They could be a good team in a few years. Like their speed.

Good to see the CBJ take four points from a team that they should. Have to win those types of games.

People in Columbus don't start thinking about Hockey until January, and we all know why. If and when this team becomes a perennial powerhouse, that will change.

If you're talking about Dan Kelly, the younger, he just doesn't do it for me as a play by play guy. He calls some BIG 10 games on BTN, and he still has that same delivery.

Konroyd, who started with Kelly in 2000 as color guy, was pretty good and wound up back in Chicago sharing time with Olczyk.

Kelly was there for a couple of those years before Chicago rehired their old play by play guy.
