At least Newhook would bring much needed skill, instead of an entire 3rd line of guys that skate and work hard while accomplishing nothing

As much as I would have liked to see Newhook in this tournament and believe it was ridiculous that he was cut while players like Dudas get to be there, he still is pretty bad when he has to play goalie. And thats realistically the only way he would make a significant difference for Team Canada.
Daws/Hofer/Rodrigues is just not good enough to realistically win a tournament like this. Other nations are able to field talented teams as well and having to overcome a massive weakness in goal is very tough at the WJC.

That was 2 years ago.

Fucale put up better numbers than that and I wouldn't consider him a good goalie.

Fucale, Hart and maybe as far back as Price have been the only high profile goalies to play for Team Canada before they played there.

Canada needs to get a better program for goalies.

If you're including Fucale then there's a bunch of highly ranked goalies that played for them and then busted. Visentin was a 1st round pick for example and had a .944 sv% in the tournament

Canada still finished 2nd though, while Sweden lost to everyone else. How does Sweden beat anyone 17-1, have that team beat Czechslovakia and Sweden lose to Czechslovakia. I just had assumed Canada starting punching up refs because of bad penalty calls and played the whole game down 2 men
Good point. I thought that maybe Canada didn’t have a back up goalie, and a skater might have had to replace an injured goalie.

Not sure if serious.

First off, hopefully those days are behind us.

Secondly, with the way this game is going, the Russians might beat us to a pulp.

nothing wrong with playing physical, but clean. No cheap shots.

OK but Hart won silver in 17 and gold in 18. That's pretty recent success.

This NHL Network coverage sounds just like the Canadian posters on here. Goaltending, off-sides, bad penalties, injuries. Who is the giant fat head in the middle between periods? Jesus you could fit 50,000 jelly beans in that guys head. What a ****ing moron, nothing but excuses for Canada.

You never countered my debate. It’s still one single goalie in a huge amount of time.

For those curious, here were the defensive pairings on the ice for Canada's goals against:

McIsaac-Smith
McIsaac-Smith
JBD-Bahl
Smith-Byram
JBD-Bahl
JBD-Bahl

Addison seems to be playing well, relatively speaking. For all of the grief he has taken, Byram has only been on the ice for one goal against to this point on Canada's first 10 goals against.

There was also Jose Theodore... wait, that was HOW MANY YEARS AGO? Oh god, I'm old.

No word yet, but based on the replay and how they lifted him off the ice, I would be amazed if he plays again in this tournament.
Even if he can play, I can't see him risking it. His stock can only go down by playing.

The rest of the team will just have to pull together.

Blaming goaltending is just an excuse. How many of these non-Canadian gold and silver medal winners over the past 20 years went on to huge success compared to the Canadian goalies? I have to pay attention to my new puppy so I'm not looking it up.

Well, I wouldn’t let him play.

He has a career ahead of him. He would have to be walking out of that dressing room today for me to put him back in.

The Russians were coming off a tough loss and we due for a rebound.

We had a big opening win and were due for a let down.

Don't read too much into this mess.
