He surprised me in that he looked extremely ready to play - clearly in shape and confident. I liked his shifts, but he seems to overthink things and tries to do what he thinks his linemates want rather than just taking control.

Near the end of the game he had a nice shift where he was holding on to the puck for a pretty long time near the blue line bringing it around to the goal line. Looked pretty good with it and I was hoping to see him do that type of thing a bit more. Hopefully that builds more confidence in him to pull that off more often.

And I agree that a lot of the time it feels like he's trying to not get in the way or be the leader (take control like you said). Looked like he's trying to do the responsible team play dictated by the coach or whoever.

Too early to tell much either way really. We did generate more scoring chances, that is a good change, but again just one game and San Jose isn't elite. At least we got a point out of it after being down, so thats good.

Not a fan of Hayton, yet, but I thought he played well. He did not look in awe like last year, and made a few nice plays. Need more, but not a bad start.
Hayton was fine IMO. He did not look out of place which was good to see. His passing is very slick. I honestly thought his line was the best most consistent line on the team.

Overall he was fine and wasnt a liability. I want to see more obviously, but he looks like he has progressed from last season.

Watched the replay last night.

Big chunk of the third period was edited out. Overall though, we had a slow start and spotted them a two goal lead. After that I felt we dictated the play.

I thought he was good. He wasn't lost when he came racing to the opposite side of the ice to attempt to cover for Goligoski who got smoked.
I didn't think he was good and yes Goose pinched, but Chych has to read it better and be on his horse much quicker.

I don’t think there is a defenseman on this team that would’ve done better in that situation. Maybe that’s not saying much, but in no way am I thinking “if only that was OEL”.

I liked that Chychrun was engaged and doing lots of stuff. But he did f*** up a few times. I’m relieved that he’s got his motor going. The muted, dazed Chychrun from the bubble was scary. Last night was more like rookie Chychrun. Or probably just rusty chychrun.

His game was kinda like the team as a whole, for me. I liked the positive signs I saw, even if the execution was not perfect. I prefer scrambly to sleepwalking.

I will focus on him on Saturday but he seemed to be out of position more often then I remembered. hopefully it was just a first game thing :)

I’m not gonna dump on anyone being rusty. Both teams had their boneheaded moments. Players from both sides looked rusty.

I thought OEL regressed bad, but holy hell, Karlson looks like straight ass

I’d like to see much more from Fischer. I think it’s too soon to scratch him (and kill his confidence) but he really didn’t do much yesterday.

I feel like if the Coyotes are going to play with this kind of pace, and with really agitating presences like Caggiula and Pitlick running amok like last night, games are going to get ugly.

We’ve witnessed far too often in the Tocchet are how this team responds to physical challenges. Typically one of our skilled guys gets rag-dolled and humiliated and the rest of the team sits on their heads, stares at the rafters and whistles a tune, pretending they saw nothing and wishing they were anywhere else in the world. It absolutely kills team morale and has literally resulted in losing streaks.

The team has proven to be too fragile to recover quickly from physical humiliation. I think this is inevitable if the team consistently plays, as we all desperately wish they would, like they did last night.

As a result, I strongly support dressing John Hayden instead of Christian Fischer. Hayden is the best and most willing fighter we’ve had since Rinaldo. He’s no enforcer, but he’s willing to go toe-to-toe and handles himself well. I remember him getting the better of Marcus Foligno in one of the longer, better fights in a while. Foligno is just about as tough as pretty much any regular forward in the NHL these days.

We won’t miss Fischer at all. He doesn’t do anything on the ice anyway. Hayden isn’t a good NHL player. But the delta between Fischer and Hayden is easily eclipsed in my opinion by the fact that we would actually have someone on the bench who can prevent us from being absolutely victimized by the next Cory Perry or Jamie Benn.

Pretending this stuff doesn’t matter is absurd given what we’ve seen with this team in recent years. They absolutely unravel and go into a tail spin when teams get nasty with them. Ryan Reaves could literally end our season next week if he was so inclined.

I think that's completely wrong and that's why they signed him/he's still here.

Fischer is a solid two way player that would probably score 20-20 if he was fed top 6 minutes with some PP time. He's responsible with the puck and doesn't need to be sheltered from top competition. He and Crouse are essentially the bookends that let the coaches mix the lines around now without too much worry.

Too many people are mad at Fischer because he doesn't play like his height and weight would suggest. He's still a great player for the money and a much better everyday player than Hayden.

Throw Hayden in against rough teams and keep everybody hungry.

Come on get real. Go back two years where Fischer had ample PP time and did absolutely nothing. Unfortunately, he is a fourth liner and I don't see him as anything else.

I could not disagree more about Fischer. I don’t think he has nearly that offensive upside. I also know that his metrics are good but I certainly don't see it with my eyeballs. He doesn’t make mistakes but he doesn’t do anything either. I think his metrics need to be Stempniakified.

Fischer doesn’t look the same player I saw in Windsor. And that’s ok. But he hasn’t carved out a new role for himself in the NHL.

I think this upcoming 4-game set versus Vegas will be very telling of what kind of team we are. The Army additions should provide the necessary pushback.
