RABBIT

AKA Turd Ferguson
How much of a hot take around here is it to say Garland is the best player on the team?

you won’t get much argument. He is definitely an underrated player in this league, and he works his ass off. Kuemper has proven himself to be a legit number 1 goalie so it may be hard to knock him off the “best on the team” pedestal but I would say he’s our best skater.

I woke up the kids with a caveman scream. Usually I have to drag them up by the last minute. Great to have the Coyotes back, thanks Phil!

Interesting to see that former Coyotes prospect Ryan Gibbons was a linesman in the game.

At 6'5 he was one of many hopes to 'develop' a power forward in the amazing generational 2003 draft from which we didnt get a single NHLer.

I really noticed Caggiula when was on the ice. Hope the effort and hustle lasts
I thought he was one of the worst, along with Larsson. The players that got bigger TOI last night deserved them, not like last year.

dont want to call hayton a bust but don't think ive heard his name all night... concerning doesn't begin to describe it.
Not a fan of Hayton, yet, but I thought he played well. He did not look in awe like last year, and made a few nice plays. Need more, but not a bad start.

Larsson is such a stud and difference maker. He never really loses 50/50 battles. Absolutely obnoxious to play against.
I thought he wasn't very effective last night, mind you I was not focusing on him.

They didn't play particularly well in any facet of the game but came back to get a point out of it.

I'll take it.
I thought the team played pretty well considering we had many new players and no training camp. Hit a couple of crossbars which could have made a difference.

Win woulda felt even better but great fight back. Got better all game long. Brassard looked pretty good, I like Pitlick.
Keller was trying. Garland is the team. Chychrun got stronger as it went on.

Kuemper was definitely not dialed in all the way. Clean up some mistakes early and it's a W.

Yeah thought we'd at least have the advantage with Kuemper in the shootout.
Kuemper was outplayed last night.

The forward group looked ok with lots of effort, Hayton still looks slow. The D is not good and will be a problem. Kuemper looked shaky just like the end of last year. What surprised me is that Nash was actually critical of the team for being soft and that the highest paid people need to perform. Not sure if the GM wanted to pass this message on or the fact that the announcers will not travel with the team. They still lost to a team that missed the playoffs and had a worse record last year. Saturday is a big game.

Really really solid first game.

The core forward group that I thought had to have a big year in order for this team to make the playoffs did... Garland, Keller, Dvorak and Kessel.

Keller I felt had a rough start, but really bounced back in the 2nd and 3rd.

Garland was excellent tonight.

My "dont overreact because it was the first game of the season" thoughts:
  • Demers struggled clearing out the front of the net
  • OEL just didnt show much
  • Defensemen overall just didnt look sharp tonight
  • Although Darcy made some solid saves, I felt he wasnt playing up to "Darcy" standards. Still solid, but we need him to be great again this year to succeed.
Overall I was really encouraged by what I saw. This is definitely a completely different team from last year's squad. When I looked at the schedule and saw 2 against SJ to start I thought we needed 3 out of 4 at least.... Lets go get those other 2 tomorrow

He surprised me in that he looked extremely ready to play - clearly in shape and confident. I liked his shifts, but he seems to overthink things and tries to do what he thinks his linemates want rather than just taking control.

A few other observations...

I truly felt the Coyotes dictated the pace of the game. I felt they controlled the puck much better than they have in the past. The Coyotes were the better team in this game... SJ was able to cash in on the few opportunities they had, so credit to them.

The majority of good quality scoring chances definitely favored the Coyotes. Multiple posts hit including one in OT. Crouse breakaway. OEL left alone in front. 2 on 0 in OT. Would've loved to see what Caggiula could've done on that early potential breakaway he almost had.

This team had a plethora of chances which honestly hasnt been the case in years.... again.... its one game, but I feel better about this team than I did going into the game.
