i just said that same thing on trade board DSL... 8-42-10 would be a weird punch of skill and finish...we'd arguably have 3 legit dangerous lines to roll...

Is it just me, or is this setting up for Gaborik to play with Arty and Horton when he returns? Jenner seems the most likely to sit, be assigned or play on the fourth line.

It's a tricky thing because it's a whole different dynamic there if that happens. I know lots of fans wouldn't like it because of Boone's physical presence (and that he's pretty strong on the puck). Boone has that occasional moment when he'll dominate, too. But he's inconsistent (not unexpected for a kid). And I'm not sure Ryan's or Dubi's line should be messed with.

I like the idea, but who switches to LW?

No idea. I mean, I think Gabby's played both sides but is more natural at RW, so... no idea.

Just looking for a place in the lineup. I personally wouldn't mind seeing Gaborik with Johansen and Foligno, and move Umberger down to Jenner's spot, but I don't know. RJU is really working his role there right now.

I got the sense that Gaborik is interested in playing for Columbus. He skated hard and took hits to make plays (like when he broke his collar bone leading to the goal against Philly). After having seen numerous high salary players just mail it in here, that's not what is going on I think.

That said, he isn't getting younger and those injuries are a major problem. If they think they can use the cap space better, that may be the smart move.

I get that sense, too, though when I scrutinize it I can't come up with a concrete reason why. I'd like to see him try his luck here, at least short-term, and I'd like to see management give him that option. If he can slot in somewhere and produce the way he has in the past, he could be a great component. One thing is, with the way this team is playing lately, they may seem an attractive option.

The injuries are more of a concern than a problem to me. The collar bone would have happened to anyone, and maybe the recuperation time for that injury will help with the others and he can come back stronger?

I'm guessing he will be fully ready two weeks before the playoffs... He could be a short term game changer for us during the playoffs, but on the other hand he might be a non factor, 50/50

The Isles aren't letting Visnovsky go to the Olympics, even if he gets medical clearance.

That's kind of a national discrimination. Visnovsky had concussion, so what? Crosby also was concussed. Can you imagine what would have happened if the Pens didn't allow Sid to go to the Olympics?

Here's a question--who is better than Gaborik that will be available at the deadline for a price we'd be willing to pay?

Take a look at the guys likely to be available. You can probably forget Moulson, Vanek or Jagr if they are available (and its not clear Vanek or Jagr will be especially if the Devils and Isles are close to us in the standings) because they are probably going to command a first round draft pick...or more. I just don't see Jarmo giving up that type of asset at this point when he still needs to build some depth down the organizational chart.

Which means that Jarmo is more likely looking for another trade similar to Gabby's deal last year where he trades from an area of depth (this year, likely from the defense and/or one of the guys battling for a fourth line position) to get a guy signed beyond this year. But that could have the same negative impacts that people are thinking Gabby could create (ruining chemistry and, worse, giving up our depth, which is an area of strength). I'm not sure I'm sold on this.

I go back and forth on Gabby, but unless you can find a team in the West that wants Gabby and will give us back a player that is useful to us, I lean towards keeping him. We've changed lines around throughout the year, so the idea that adding in a scorer of Gabby's caliber will negatively effect chemistry or make the team worse, seems overblown.

It seems to me with the offense and PP significantly improved, the areas for concern are PK, defense and backup goaltending. I'd like to see the defense bolstered and a better backup goaltender for the playoffs, but I'm also not willing to trade much other than (1) Gabby (in the right deal), (2) picks from the 2nd or later rounds in this weak draft and, even then, I'm not sure I would want to trade away more than one pick, (3) Dalton Prout (unless we trade another defenseman in a move that is an obvious upgrade).

Good to hear from you Captain...

That said, I've not been a fan of Gabby since we got him but sometimes the way things roll out are situational.. We certainly could use better backup goaltending but our defense is solid and we're third ranked in the East scoring differential..

I wouldn't change much right now.. Here's my one thought on keeping Gabby for the playoffs, he wants a contract and may break out during the playoffs to get it.. I don't think he will hurt chemistry any more than bringing up a great player from the minors would hurt chemistry (as an example not literal)-he might simply add to it. It can't hurt having an extra scoring forward during the playoffs.

The GM of Team Slovakia had this to say in an interview today:

"Lubo confronted Garth Snow after this information and he (Snow) told him that the interview was a couple of days old. He can still go to Sochi if he's healthy. There's no reason to panic."

I believe Gaborik will go to the Olympics as well.

The one weakness on the team is backup goalie. A tough, physical, stay at home defensive defenseman would help, but it's not necessarily a weakness.

It may be a fascinating situation with Gabby.
Let's assume the CBJ and Gabby have spoken and Gabby has made it clear he wants a big extension for big dollars. Let's further assume the CBJ have decided that is not what they are comfortable doing.

So you have a team fighting for the playoffs, a franchise that is desperate for the playoffs, with a near elite offensive player (that's even an assumption at this point that when healthy that he is still elite) who they likely will lose for no compensation in the off-season. It's also not likley that you can get equal value for him (at least for his potential worth) due to his injuries and contract status.

So question is if you can trade him for a first round pick(s) or good prospect(s) (things that don't help the playoff run, but could help in future), or do you trade him for lesser value (say a veteran backup tender and a stay at home d-man and draft pick or two) to solidify your roster, or do you hold onto him to make your run this year.

Probably depends on aggresiveness and how far the front office thinks we can get this year. If the front office thinks this roster can make a signifcant playoff run - then maybe you roll the dice and keep him or at least solidify the roster by trading him.
If the front office looks at our roster and says we're a year away from being able to win a series (or even make the playoffs) it's an easy choice.
There is a major difference between being an average NHL team that makes the playoffs and being a cup contendor. Usually from my observations it's goal tending and defense, I think we may have the tending (again assuming bob continues playing well and staays healthy). Would need a more critical eye than mine to say wheter our d-men and forwards can pick it up another gear?

Again my assumption is Gabby has no interest in being here next year. Maybe if that changes (someone said in another thread about a bonus laden contract) you can retain him. But it will be fascinating to see what the CBJ does with him.

The Jackets are making it tough on JK in terms of Gabby. It is going to be tough if we get to the deadline and are on the play-off bubble.

My thought is that if we are in the hunt, they stand pat with Gabby. If we crash and burn and are out of it he is gone.

Im on board with do nothing and let Gaborik be the big deadline acquisition. Unless you get an offer you can't refuse elsewhere or for Gaborik.

Any news on his recovery?

#CBJ Marian Gaborik (collarbone) skated again today. No shooting yet. Another X-ray scheduled for next week.

#CBJ Marian Gaborik said heading to California with team next week is "up for discussion," but playing b4 break "is impossible, I think."
