What I am curious about is how much is his own skill and how much is due to the team in front of him.

The team last year wasn't that great TBH. Frk was out until December, Drouin no showed until December and when Frk came back he wasn't the same. He played every game possible from late October until the end of the playoffs and he was great in the first 2 rounds. Mediocre in the third round but the whole team seemed gassed after the 3-0 series comeback. He seems to be extremely good mentally which is the biggest plus for a goalie.

The team last year was supposed to not be ready yet and led by a few 16 year olds and Fucale, Drouin and Nate were all equally good in the playoffs.

Our offense is good, but our overall defense isn't great. Too many times Fucale bailed up out last season.

Good point. By "not great" he means "pretty bad". Defence is definitely a big weak spot in this team.

Fucale seems like the real deal and the best goalie we've had since maybe Leclaire. Pascal was extremely good on this team, too, but injuries always held Leclaire back.

still can't believe how it went for his career. When he was traded to Senators I was actually worried.

Well if what you say is true, lets hope the leafs get him ;)

Me, too. My buddy is a diehard Sens fan and obv a Moose fan so he was pretty excited and kept rubbing it in my face. I actually hung out with Pascal a bit when he was on our team so I really wanted him to succeed. Until he got to Ottawa

I REALLY want Leafs to get him. Any of the 3 Mooseheads would be nice. Id want Nate first, then Fucale then Drouin. Typically the difference between a good goalie and a great goalie is the mental aspect of the game and scouts say that is the strongest part of his game.

Wow. 2 goals on 7 shots after 1, allowing a goal with 2.2 seconds left in the period. Cmon! Hes better than this..

Hahah awesome! Sad to say even if they bombed the Leclaire part, they have a very intriguing prospect in Lehner from that same trade. Lehner can be trouble if he actually shows the same calder cup form.

I personally want Mackinnon, then Drouin and then Fucale. Drouin I think gets buried due to the Mackinnon talk, I really like his skill set.

Was at the game tonight, he was shaky all game. He hasnt been looking to great. He was solid on the two shootout shots though.

I think he needs to get warmed up a bit... He's been solid in the 3rd, and OT's... Meh he hasn't played great. But he played well in the U18's and has a good head on his shoulders...

I've been saying that a lot, but unless this still continues 10-15 games from now, I won't be concerned.

BUMP

After 8 games this season Zach is 6th in GAA at 2.22 and 8th in SVP at 0.906.

On Friday night he was a big reason why the Mooseheads won in Drummondville as the rest of the team forgot games are for 60 minutes not 20 minutes.

Every time I go to a mooseheads game it feels like I'm watching a young Carry Price in net. This kid is as calm in over time as he is in the warm up.

So so GAA and terrible SP% on arguably the best team in the CHL.

Whats up?

I have only watched the mooseheads 5 times this season , but they have been absolutely awful defensively every game but they are so good offensively that it doesn't matter. Fucale does make quite a few tremendous saves every game, and you gotta consider that most games he doesn't face many shots, which doesn't allow him to get into a rythm, and if he lets in just a few goals his SV% will be bad. Overall i would say he has been ok and won't go nearly as high in the draft as some thought before the season.

Agree with most of this. Except I wouldn't call our defenseman corps awful... I know you didn't directly say that, I'm just saying we hold opponents to less than 25 shots a game frequently... There's been a lot of PP goals, and plays where he's had no chance on...

As many have said earlier he is great when we need him, but getting a quality shutdown defenseman would help. There's a tendency to be too scrambly in our own zone and sometimes a man will be left open in the slot.

The getting into a rhythm thing is bang on though. He had almost no D in front of him last season so he'd be peppered and tested early... This season a lot (sportsnet game against Gatineau is a good example) the offense will have control for so long, he won't get tested until 10 minutes in.

I don't know if his bad % will affect his draft status too much, as scouts don't always look for that. He's still a big game, cool as a cucumber guy.

Because its QMJHL hockey, goalie stats are flawed. Defensive coverage isn't the best, our D isn't great. We average less than 25 shots against per game but that is more due to our offence having the puck so much. In our own end, we give up some good chances but stats for goalies mean little in this league IMO

For example, Leclaire had a 891 save percentage his draft year with us and went 8th overall. Injuries derailed his NHL career though

Team defense is alright, and the best defense is often a good offense, but outside of Abeltshauser, the defense corps is actually quite bad. Disturbingly bad for a team with Mem. Cup aspirations, actually. They've been playing fairly disciplined hockey, and that always helps, but man... the talent and quality just isn't there. Gazzola has been a bit of a pleasant surprise for me, but his skill seems to be focused a lot on the far half of the ice. Would love to see his size used better to control the defensive half of the ice, as well. Bottom line, they defense is very offense oriented (skill and mentality), which seems to work well with our forward talent, but Fucale ends up hung out to dry way, way too much for my liking.

And I don't necessarily agree with the "get in a rhythm" thing, either. Fucale prepares as well as anyone, and has been making huge saves and stopping alarming numbers of odd man rushes since the beginning of the season. He doesn't face a lot of shots on average, but opponents get enough quality chances in the run of a game (I've seen too many odd man rushes against our powerplay, for example); often because of miscues from the defense. If they capitalize on any of them, Fucale's numbers can take a hit that they can't recover from in small samples. Doesn't matter though. Kid is cool, solid, money in the bank.

What I am curious about is how much is his own skill and how much is due to the team in front of him.

The kids bloody good, while the team this year is a year older/wiser and stronger, the fact remains, in spite of nights where he doesn`t see as much rubber, rarely do we see him let in a softie which often happens with lack of activity for goalies.

I`m not a scout, not close and don`t have any guage on how his game will translate if at all to a pro level, but at the Junior level, all he`s done is get better and that`s all you can ask of a kid
