I was sifting through old scouting reports to make a point about Shestyorkin in the Rangers forum, and I stumbled upon such a revealing quote when it comes to Russian draft prospects.

Red Line Report had him the 41st ranked player, 2nd ranked goalie. This was their blurb for him.

Most underrated at any position; may not be drafted.

How is that even possible? I'm perplexed how NHL teams still have no clue how to scout Russia. Sorokin was drafted in the same draft, but wasn't drafted in his original draft. How? How are teams so dumb? It really is amazing how poorly NHL teams scout Russia.

We live in the world of followers. Most people are. There are very few guys with genuine ideas of their own.

After Chicago SOMEHOW got Panarin(after pretty much every russian poster here was telling everybody he's the best Russian outside the NHL) everyone jumps the new hype - finding undrafted gems in Russia.. so now everyone expects any undrafted player out of Russia to be the next Panarin.

All this instead of playing the long game and installing some scouting in Russia. Let's wait what the next hype will be...

Meanwhile Bob is heading straight to his next Vezina(I hope I haven't jinxed it now). The undrafted guy from Novokuznetsk.

I'm not sure.
I think it's more a thing that with Panarin, Bobrovsky, and so, it's better not to draft Russian (European?) players, they can be used to "cheat" with the salary cap and can be developed for free at home...

That's nonsensical. Every other GM could use a 7th rund pick then to secure the rights.

Btw I also think that for our players is generally better not to get drafted. When you're undrafted you can choose the best team for yourself. Just look at panarin/zaitsev vs nichushkin/yakupov...

Its the usual reasons, but with goalies its also particularly tough timing issues.

I.e., there is a big risk that a Russian goalie -- not willing to bolt to juniors -- will be a well paid established player in Russia, if he has developed well, by the time its time to move him to NA. But the team bringing him over can of course not "promise" him a spot like what was done with Panarin, on the contrary unless the goalie is extremely special, time in the AHL seems very likely.

Timing issues are always tough with goalies, but with a Russian goalie you may have to wait say 2-5 years before you can take him over, you won't control when he signs. Then to convince him to come over, you need to have an opening in the NHL prepared after a pretty short break in period.

Idk much about goalies, but he looks freakishly calm in net and made all of those saves look easy with his positioning .

Yeah, these younger guys are so influenced by the way Price plays in the net (even if Shest is much smaller). Small movements. Make sure to be in balance to make a save. It stands out so much compared Hank, Quick and the likes, always scrambling all over the place.

At the same time, do you think Tarasenko chooses St. Louis? No offense to any people on HFboards from St. Louis, but not really a big market. Would Kucherov choose Tampa Bay when at the time they were terrible on the ice and its a terrible market?

I think every situation is different. Yakupov probably didn't benefit from having the pressure on him of carrying such a terrible organization as a teenager and in his early 20's, meanwhile Nichushkin's skills either never really developed or teams simply overrated the skills he had.

Connor Ingram wasn't drafted his first time and plays in the WHL. He had a better SV% than Carter Hart most of the season. Sometimes scouts just don't get to see a player

Rangers are just very lucky that they have what could potentially be Lundqvist's successor in the system, probably ready to come over when in the last year or two of Henrik L's contract.

They may not have a lot of pieces, but somehow they manage to bring in one or two rookies a year...

He's the guy scoring the goal, not the one in goal. He switched spots with Prokhorkin during a team scrimmage. He also had two assists in this scrimmage. He's had points before in KHL and junior games. He's probably one of the better puck handling goalies around.

He looks a lot better as a skater than Prokhorkin as a goalie.

He was nominated for best KHL Goalie this season at the KHL awards, but didn't win. Koshechkin won, Sorokin was the other nominee.

Igor had the best stats of the three though. I'm surprised Yeryomenko wasn't nominated for the award, he had some of the best stats in the league.

Keep in mind Kovalchuk's kid scored 2 goals in the scrimmage. That was SKA's end of the season players, family and friends game.

The oldest son is like 8 years old, thought he was older, still too early. Though, it's funny how his former teamate Antropov whos only 3 years older has a son who turns 17 this year.

Gorton spoke to the media and was asked about Shestyorkin.

He made it seem like there wasn't going to be a buyout of the last year of his KHL contract, so two more years it is, probably. I didn't think it was likely anyway, considering Sorokin didn't buy out the last year of his deal.
