Igor Shestyorkin finishes the KHL regular season at 31-4-2 w/ a 1.64 goals-against average, .937 save percentage, and eight shutouts. #NYR

So to update on the situation.

The coach has decided that the worse goalie will be the playoff starter.

They swept Vityaz in the first round. Although, it wasn't like Koskinen stood on his head. SKA is just that much better than Vityaz. Shestyorkin will probably have to wait until the latter rounds for his turn.

If Koskinen doesn't falter, his KHL season is likely over. Great season though.

Hard to believe a goalie can go 31-4-2, 1.64 GAA, .937 SV% in the regular season and still warm the bench in the playoffs :laugh::laugh:

Well Koskinen has combusted into 94.2% over the last 4 playoff games.

His SV% was .021 lower than Shestyorkin in the regular season. Shestyorkin is a better hockey player.

...umm a better hockey player sans playoff experience.

Koskinen is a fantastic seasoned vet who's been outright dominant every playoffs since coming to the KHL.
There's nothing irrational about Znorok starting him over a youngster who only just completed his first full season in the league.

EDIT: Koskinen's accumulative KHL playoff stats: 51gp, 1.62 GAA, .939 SV%

You know Koskinen is the best Finnish goalie in Europe right? He had an injury before the season, which was the main reason Shestyorkin got as many starts as he got. It's actually a similar situation to Raanta/Lundqvist: who would you honestly start in the playoffs? Exactly.

I know what Koskinen is. And I would start Shestyorkin over him 10/10.

If thats the case, he's still worse than Shestyorkin. Doesn't change the situation. Shestyorkin's outplayed him all season, and outplayed him and beat him when they played each other at the Euro Hockey Tour right before the playoffs started. The reasoning isn't hard to understand. Koskinen has experience playing in the playoffs and all that. Thats why he's starting. Dominik Hasek at one point didn't have playoff experience, it doesn't mean you start an inferior goalie to him because of it.

Its Znarok's choice, and if SKA loses when they come up against CSKA or Magnitka because they have inferior goaltending, its on him. They are the best team in the KHL by far, otherwise, but if you play a guy who's struggled to even produce as a good KHL back up this season, you could lose, considering how good Sorokin and Samsonov are for the other two teams.

This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who's watched Koskinen this season. He is not the same player as he was in previous seasons. Shestyorkin badly outplayed him all season. People can say any goalie would play well for SKA, but Shestyorkin's stats are so much better than Koskinen's for a reason. Znarok has used the experience excuse for starting Koskinen, and he can do whatever he wants, but once they face a good team, they are probably going in with a big disadvantage in goal, unless they switch to Shestyorkin because Koskinen has not been a KHL starting goalie this season.

Koskinen made a lot of key safes during these playoffs. Say, the 2nd game vs Dynamo, where he made 3 huge safes in the first 10 min. But yeah, these red line goals look kinda humorous.

Koskinen got injured today in the first down 1-0, Shestyorkin came in the game, and they won 2-1 in OT. He made 32 saves, including a point blank save at the end of regulation. He was excellent, hadn't faced a shot in a month and a half, and he came into a conference final and pitched close to a three period shutout.

I'm hoping that AV's treatment of Buchnevich does not sway Shestyorkin from signing with the Rangers. He looks like he could be an NHL starter next season

Costco wasn't even the backup for today's game. So it looks like for now, Shesty will lead SKA through the rest of the Gagarin Cup.

Nice performance for Shestyorkin. 33 of 34 saves two days after saving 32 of 32 in relief. Three straight wins for him, and now SKA is on to the finals.

If Koskinen returns, I wonder who plays. At the very least, he's given them something to think about when they make the goalkeeping decision. The reasoning given for Koskinen starting was that young goalkeepers tend to make mistakes in the playoffs. Given how he's played the last two games, I think you could say that might not apply as much to Shestyorkin as some other young goalkeepers.
