Good young goalie prospect. As an Isles fan, I thought it was a great pick for the Rangers, like Buchnevich. As an Islander's fan, I was happy to get Sorokin and Soderstrom in the 2014 draft, but the Rangers did a great job picking Halverson & Shesterkin in that draft, two great goalie prospects. I think both teams are set for when Lundqvist and Halak are gone. Shesterkin seems to be a very good all around prospect, good glove, fast feet, good at going side to side, I like him a lot as a prospect, definitely has starting potential, with the potential to be a top goalie in the NHL.

Now when Koskinen goes to WCH, Shesterkin is going to be a starter for awhile.

Will be a good opportunity, hope they dont use local guy Ibannikov instead. Im interested to see if they start fazing Koskinen out slowly since he is under contract only up until next season. Based on the contract Shesty just signed, It must be in the plans to let him overtake Koskinen at some point and dump Koskinen next season.

Koskinen has been gone for two games, and Shestyorkin has stopped 45 of 47 shots. One of them a 2-1 loss, the other a 4-0 win. The two shots he allowed were both deflections. He's done a pretty good job so far.

That is his only chance. He should jump on it. WCoH is the best thing to happen to his career now.

Koskinen has been gone four games. Shestyorkin has stopped 103 of 110 shots in those four games, which is a .936 save percentage. 3 of those 4 games have been wins, the other was a shootout loss where he stopped 4 of 6 shots in the shootout, but his team only made 1 of 6 shootout shots, so its not exactly his fault that they lost. By my count, 2 of the 7 goals he's allowed since Koskinen was at the WCH have been deflections that he could do absolutely nothing about, two he's been completely screened, another one he was interfered with by the other team along with terrible defense by his defenseman and forwards, and only two he might've been at fault or partially at fault for, although neither were particularly bad goals. I've watched a few of these games as well, and he's made a number of really nice saves.

It would be good if he keeps the starting spot when Koskinen returns. Koskinen probably won't be able to play tomorrow, and Sunday might be unlikely as well. They play next Tuesday, so that might give a better idea of which goalie will start.

He's won 9 of his last 10 games, including his last seven games. 3 of those games have been shutouts. He now has a 93% save percentage, and a 1.86 GAA. It seems like Shestyorkin is the SKA starter at least for now. He's started every single game that Koskinen has been back for, except for one, the only loss in that span, a game Koskinen let in five goals on 23 shots.

I think they might go back to Koskinen eventually, but Shestyorkin is proving himself to be a really capable KHL goalie.

IMO looks like Shestorkin is now the #1 guy. He has the longer contract and its obvious they are now favoring him, giving him the opportunity and he's running with it. Ivannikov is a more than capable backup too.

But then maybe your right, they have nothing to gain by trading Koskinen. They dont need anymore players in any position, the only benefit would be the salary dump, which they dont even care about. So yeah, maybe they keep Koskinen around as expensive insurance since they have nothing to gain from dumping the guy as long as it keeps raining money in St Petersburg.

Battle of the two top KHL teams and two of the top goalie prospects with Sherterkin and Sorokin....Sherterkin and SKA won 1-0 with Sherterkin stopped 38 shots and getting his 3 shutout in a row

Kid is going to be a very good NHL goalie one day.

Should we spell it Shestyorkin or Shesterkin. Both are used. I use Shestyorkin because thats what it is on his instagram account, so I figure thats more official, but I also know that its just the translated version by instagram. What spelling would a Russian speaker use?

It's the same as with Shipachev/Shipachyov. I spell with e just because I'm lazy, it should be yo.

Can we get a thread title change to SKA Saint Petersburg, KHL instead of SKA-Kareliya St. Petersburg?

He's now the starter of the KHL team, I don't think he'll be playing anymore in the VHL.

FWIW, it's Shestyorkin on the jerseys he wears.

But I don't think it really matters. I do find myself using Shestyorkin more than Shesterkin out of habit.

187:03 shutout streak and counting...

Him and Sorokin are going to be fun to watch in NY in the future.

Man, I should probably write a guide about Russian language and copy-paste it every time. Here's the explanation.

His family name is Шестёркин. What you would see on his Russian jersey in WC is Shestyorkin. It's transliteration: you transcribe letters in his name according to standard rules. Namely, Ш-е-с-т-ё-р-к-и-н becomes Sh-e-s-t-yo-r-k-i-n.

Now, people in Russia are lazy and often write е instead of ё. That's how Shestyorkin becomes Shesterkin - it's bad, don't do it.

Pronunciation is another beast. There is a concept rather unfamiliar for you Romance and Germanic speakers - most consonants have hard and soft variant. It's somewhat like the difference in pronunciation of l in English (hard) and French (soft). To model it you should pronounce his name Shesteorkin - where e in teo should be really really short. Stress is on the second syllable for all you Quebecois.

TL;DR Shestyorkin

Thanks!

LOL a few months ago Isles fans saying Shesty not even in the same league as Sorokin, go look in Sorokin thread. Classic case of HF statistic scouting.

At the next WCH we will probably have Vasilevsky, Sorokin, Shesterkin and Samsonov. I mean, goalie position won't be our weak link.

While it is true that I hardly watch khl games (so i do only stat-watch), I also think it is fair to point out that a 2nd string goalie is not in the same league as the Vezina equivalent. Shestyorkin is performing well, but Sorokin is far more established as of now.

I think the point all along people have made in Shestyorkin's favor is that there isn't much of a talent difference between the two, and it might even favor Shestyorkin. Lets not forget that Shestyorkin was the preferred goalie at the 2015 WJC's.

No one has disputed that Sorokin has been better so far in the KHL, but he has also been given more of a chance to do well. It isn't known how much any of that will matter.

Lets wait more time to determine who will be better. I'm pretty sure there will be plenty of arguments between NYI and NYR fans on this in the coming years.
