does anyone know what the records for GAA and S% are in the khl? I was wondering if sorokin is on his way to break some records this season.

Well, there is a team you are not aware of. Lokomotiv Yaroslavl has built a defensive wall this season and their G Murygin was a big part of it and will take home the records. 13 shutouts and .954 against Sorokin's 10 and .953. Murygin also played 6 more games than Sorokin. Sorokin has beaten Murygin for the GAA 1.06 vs. 1.13 for Murygin.

Also it was an extremly low scoring season, even by KHL standards. There are bunchesof goalies with low GAA. The first goaltender to have above 2 GAA is good for 14th in the league. Still there is a significant dropp off beyond Murygin and Sorokin.

I would rather take the percentage as a measuring stick for the above reasons. Pretty much the same there. A drop off after Murygin and Sorokin, but not by that much with 3 runner ups with the same .938.

There is one flaw to the whole thing. The typical undisputed no.1 starters that played over 40 games and faced nearly double the amout of shots of course have worse stats(with Salak being one of the .938 runner ups still).

CSKA was splitting the starts between 3 goaltenders, Lokomotiv between 2. So both Murygin and Sorokin have enjoyed a more relaxed pace which might have improved their numbers.

Shestyorkin worked hard to get a shutout win on his debut game for Russia NT tonight.

Allowed one goal today in another win. He's now allowed 1 goal on 62 shots, getting 2 wins in his first two Russian National Team games. He also just had a record breaking VHL season.

Shesty is really going under the radar. Whenever he plays for whoever, he plays really well. I'd like the Rangers to bring him over after this season to play in the AHL, if SKA is not going to let him be the starter next season or loan him out to another KHL team to start.

Seeing as how Koskinen was just re-signed at SKA, I doubt he's going to be the starter there.

He'll likely be their full-time backup though, which wasn't the case this past year.

He was at the end of the season and during the playoffs. I get the sense that he was really the back up, but they didn't want him sitting on the bench every game and not playing, so instead they made the other goalie the back up, and let Shesterkin play regularly with the VHL team. Once it got to the playoffs, they probably wanted their two best goalies available for each game, not wanting to take any chances, incase Koskinen had to leave a game.

True. I guess this could be the case and is an interesting way to handle the dedicated backup goalie. By actually sending him down to keep getting playing time, and then bringing him up for the important stuff (ie end of season push/playoffs).

These two kids have been battling each other for a few years now, and it doesn't look likely to stop. I wonder if they are friends or hate each other.

First it was for draft position. Sorokin was the first Russian goalie picked in the 2014 Draft, Sorokin won that battle. Then it was at the 2015 WJC for the starting job, Shestyorkin won that battle. Now its for the third spot with the Russian NT at the WC, Sorokin looks likely to win this battle. In a few years it could be in a Rangers-Islanders rivalry game. Both teams have other good goalie prospects, so its not a sure thing and these two have to actually get there, but these two seem to be the frontrunners for the #1 goalie spot for the Rangers and Islanders in a few seasons.

As far as I know they are friends.

I can't speak to the Rangers, but Sorokin is far and away the Isles' best goalie prospect.

Not terrible. SKA is the best team outside of the NHL, and he wasn't going to be playing NHL games for us the next few years either. Now he just has to get some playing time for SKA. :help:

Shestyorkin had a rough game against Ak Bars, gave up 4 goals on a 5 minute PP. A few were soft and he got pulled. Video is in the Yarullin thread.

No big deal, just one bad game, though his stats after it are horrifying.

I looked up his EliteProspects page while I was browsing through the thread. I'm sure he'll bounce back but a 23.72 GAA and .556 SV% looks hilarious to me.

Looks like he has some fantastic statistics throughout his career so I expect him to fix those numbers pretty quick!

was it he who had a meltdown in the final game of the 2015 wjc? another game of big importance and he folds up under pressure. hope it won't become a habit for him

so lundqvist at 37, Raanta gives way to Shestyorkin and Halvorson in 2019?

Raanta's not in consideration.

The expectation is Shestyorkin eventually, in the opinion of most Ranger fans.

Some of us have Huska as the second best goalie prospect, others have it as Halverson. Also an outside chance its Skapski, and then Wall is almost a complete unknown to the fans.

We are good in terms of goalie prospect depth, its just very hard to predict goalie prospects

Not really. He started the game, and gave up two goals in the first few minutes, but neither were really bad goals to give up. Bragin pulled him because the team was flat the first few minutes, and were about to get run out of the building, so he wanted to change up the momentum.

I don't want to start any NYR-NYI arguments in here, but the worse goals in this game were given up by the back up Sorokin. I think thats rather clear from the highlights.

Here are the highlights of that game, which was one of the best junior hockey games I've watched. I thought Russia was going to come back and win the game. That Canada team was so good though, and they played at home, so it was going to be tough to beat them.

No need to start an argument because Sorokin and "Shesty" are not in the same tier as prospects
