Garand has had an up and down year, though he was definitely better in the 2nd half than the first. When Domingue was called up to be a black ace, Garand was given the net and he has run with it.

2-1 in his last 3 regular season games. 5 goals against in those games and a .947 save %.

In the playoffs, he is 5-1 with a 1.17 gaa and .954 save %. Leads the league in gaa, save%, wins and shutouts (2).

Since the start of February (22 games), he has a .922 SV% in the AHL. It took him some time, but he figured out the AHL late last season, had a good playoffs, and has allowed one goal in each of his first two games to start the current season.

He could get his first NHL game or a few this season, and if he continues to play well be the backup for next season.

Yeah, I agree. Igor is like 6 years and change older, which isn’t great timing, but he’ll be a league minimum contract (those we need) that can hopefully give us reliable goaltending, even if only as the backup.

6 straight starts allowing two goals or less. Now at .912 SV%. 34 save shutout today. Top 15 in the AHL in SV%, and the only two of the top 15 that are younger than him are the first rounds picks that are his age (Askarov and Wallstedt).

He's playing his way into the backup spot for the NHL team next season.

I'm always curious how NHL teams will handle their goalie prospects... Many of them become NHL ready but due to their goalie situation in the NHL, they stay in the AHL so they can continue to play huge mins. Would be awesome to see Garand in the NHL but I would assume with Shesterkin being the definate top guy in NYR, that Garand will continue to play AHL for a while?

He's only 21 years old still ... But ya I'll be curious to see what NYR does in the offseason. Either way seems like NYR could potentially yet again have another good goalie coming

Unless they marinate him one more year in Hartford of course. They can replace Quick with another 1 year deal on a goalie if necessary

I think they might bring in someone who has a two-way contract and can go down to the minors. Someone not as established as Quick. Someone that Garand can compete with for the second spot, and if he earns it, then he'll take it. If not, someone who isn't going to kill the team playing as a true backup. It could also be a back and forth thing where Garand might need to shuttle back and forth to get more games or he might struggle initially in the NHL, so probably not a Quick or Halak that are no-doubt NHL players. They could also wait one more season before Garand starts the season with an NHL spot.

Any chance he becomes a solid starter? I'd take him never sniffing 0.930 if he's also not the biggest headcase goalie in the NHL.

Has a .911 SV%. That’s 17th of 51 qualified goalies in the AHL. Top 1/3 for a 21 year old is pretty good. This is his second AHL season and he’s started winning the net from Domingue.

Quick was resigned, so Garand probably will get a third AHL year next year. But Quick is old, so he could fall off a cliff at any point and make Garand needed for the NHL team. And I think he’ll probably get at least a game or two next season anyway as the third goalie.

.917 this year so far after a shutout last night. Has a 29 point better SV% than the veteran Domingue and has taken over AHL starting duties.

Igor now resigned. Quick is doing well again this year. But Quick is old. Will he want to even return next year? Will the Rangers definitely want him back? Garand is showing that he’s probably ready for the backup spot whenever Quick leaves, and you figure at some point this season he should get his NHL debut.

I can't see him demanding a trade. Askarov was a 1st round pick, highly touted, and has put up good numbers since entering the AHL.

Garand has killed it in the playoffs, but his regular seasons have been very uneven. He has to show he can be more consistent.

If he continues to play well, I could see him being the backup next year. And if he continues to progress, then the Rangers will have to make a decision.

Would be similar to Talbot behind the King. Worked his way to the NHL, provided solid backup and then had to leave to spread his wings after showing he was at least going to be a shared starter somewhere.
