So one sequence of plays completely nullifies what he did in the 6 full games leading up to that moment? Not to mention Garand and Canada won gold regardless...

I appreciate the discourse but that kind of thinking is flawed.

I feel like that was more of a McTavish misplay than a Garand one too.

In all the hoopla about about McTavish’s amazing goal line save (and it was amazing), I’ve been wondering why nobody has mentioned that it was his botched reception of the puck that caused the play…

McTavish’s line was exhausted. Garand should’ve covered the puck.

It was a standard play, exhausted or not. Accept the puck and send it up the boards.

You should never send the puck up the boards in a 3 on 3 situation. Possession is everything. Taking a chance on a faceoff is better than a certain turnover.

Results were good but it looked like he was questioning his glove hand a lot through the tournament. He also had some outrageous rebounds on weaker long range shots. The opposition goaltenders seemed to have more poise in general but still lost because Eh Canada Eh!

What are some of these takes? Garand faced like 25 shots per game, and was asked not to lose the game for his team. He didn't. Didn't give up more than 3 goals in any game.

Wallstedt played on a really weak Sweden team and was asked to play some great games that wasn't asked of Garand. If you play well in those games it's going to get you more accolades than being a good goaltender for a dominant team.

Don't trash Garand because his job wasn't to stop 35 shots per game. Besides, it doesn't matter what any of the trashers say. He had a .925 and 1.98 without losing a game. That speaks for itself.

Yea he played well. Great for a fourth round pick. I'm confident he will be good enough to be an average starter at least and possibly great backup. Rangers def like small goalies between SHesterkin, Halak and Garand.
Maybe he’ll become an NHL player but that’s a crazy take.

These teams couldn’t beat good AHL teams and now you’ve got him penciled in as “Good enough to be an average starter at least and possibly great back up.”?

I’m at a loss for words.

Was Cossa injured, and that’s why Garand got to play?

“Was” better in this tournament but Cossa is considered the better prospect, no?
I'd say no.

Both played in the same league and are the same age but Garand put up much better numbers(playing on equally good teams), and was also the CHL goalie of the year. Cossa was not close to that. Cossa was definitely the better prospect 2 years ago, but he still has a lot of improving to do, esp average an average season.

No, Garand has outplayed Cossa all year.

I don't think the take is that it's 100% that Garand will be that. I think the take is that he predicts that's what Garand will become. Garand has been excellent for his whole career since starting junior. He would've been a first round pick if he was 2 inches taller. These small goalies that put up big numbers season after season tend to end up being pretty good. I don't think any of us think he'll be as good as Shestyorkin because who is, but I think a lot of Rangers fans are starting to think he'll be able to be a Talbot or Raanta to Shestyorkin's Lundqvist situation.

That take is a little more measured. I approve. ;)

I mean, I am much more confident of him than I am most other goalie prospects largely because the Rangers are the best goaltender development team in the league (and it's really not close). If any team is going to make something of him, it will be the Rangers.

I never get too excited about any goalie prospect until I see them in the AHL. Even Shesterkin, who put up ridiculous numbers in the KHL, had question marks until he came over. The difference between Shesty and any other goalie in Hartford was night and day. He carried that team until he got called up and they dropped in the standings.

I want to see Garand in the AHL this year. Hopefully he can win the job over Domingue. If he ends up playing in the ECHL, that's not the end of the world. Lots of good goalies have spent time in the ECHL. We're probably looking at 2-3 years before he is ready for the NHL in any case.

Hopefully he will continue trending upwards. Both Huska and Wall came into Hartford with some hype (if only among Ranger fans), and neither were able to take the next step.

He was a good goalie in the KHL, too. Not too much of a question mark then, I think.

He was great in the KHL, but he played on a very good team, and it isn't uncommon for goalies to have very good numbers in that league. Look at Koskinen. In 2017-18, his last year in the KHL, he put up 1.57 and .937 in 29 games. That same year, Pavel Francouz had 1.80 and .946 in 35 games.

The question about Shesty was more about how his game would translate to the NHL. Based on his play in the AHL, I was a lot more confident that he would be good at the NHL level.

Played about half a preseason game. Stopped 9 of 10 shots. He gave up a goal on the second shot. It was a pretty bad goal to give up, but he settled down after that and played a good third period.

Likely will start as the 4th goalie for this season. It's possible he gets his NHL debut this season if he has a very good season in the AHL, but very unlikely it'd be much more than that.

Path is clear though towards the end of the 2023-24 or at the start of the 2024-25 season to take the back up spot, as long as he does well in the AHL.

He probably misspoke, but Garand was interviewed by the Rangers team reporter last week and said he watched every game Shestyorkin played last season.

Garand's preparation and work-ethic is supposedly crazy, so while he probably misspoke, this might be the type of thing someone with that type of work-ethic does.
