Still at .925 SV%. He’s only .03 behind Cossa, who is at .928. They are the only two qualified goalies in the league over .920, so as I predicted last month he’d give Cossa a run for best goalie in the league and the starting spot at the World Juniors. I don’t expect him to win either, but being competitive with a first round pick, which he has so far, shows he’s one of the more underrated goalie prospects in hockey.

29 of 30 shots stopped today. Now at .929 SV%. He’s allowed one goal or less seven of his last eight games. He’s probably our most underrated prospect right now. Goalie prospects that put up good numbers year after year are the goalie prospects that project the best to the NHL, and Garand does that.

Obviously it's just 1 pre-tournament game but I thought Garand looked way better than Cossa.

It's the last shot at the WJC for both so it'll be a tough decision. I think Cossa has the pedigree over Garand but if you base it on last night's game, Garand is the clear winner.

I think they split the group stage games and will take those performances as the barometer, rather than last night's.

Pretty much. It reminds me of Knight vs. Wolf on Team USA last year, where Knight ultimately ended up prevailing as the starter.

Junior career ends in a game 7 loss to Seattle. Had a 1.92 GAA and .933 SV% in 17 playoff games this year. He held up his end of the bargain, but his team wasn’t the best WHL team this year. Excited for his pro career to start next year in the AHL. He should be the eventual Igor backup after a few AHL seasons, but he also needs to continue stopping the puck at a high rate for that to happen.

How is NYRs goalie depth in the AHL and ECHL for next season? The reason I am curious is I am wondering if there is potential NYR sends Garand back for 1 more season as a 20 year old to Kamloops Blazers again seeing that they are hosting the Memorial Cup?

I know back in 2017 NYR did that with 2nd round pick Ryan Gropp and sent him back to a very strong Seattle Thunderbirds team playing along side Barzal/Bear/Kolesar etc etc as a 20 year old too. Seattle went on to win the WHL and make it to the Memorial Cup.

Our depth is pretty thin. Wall is an RFA, so he may be back, but his numbers weren't great even at the ECHL level last year. Huska and Kinkaid are both UFAs and there's a good chance neither are back next year.

We signed Lindbom (2018 2nd rounder), but I'd be very surprised if he gets much time in the AHL.

Boyko and Ollas should remain in the CHL and NCAA, respectively.

I think most Ranger fans are expecting Garand to be in the AHL. It would be nice for him play in the Memorial Cup, but it's probably better for him if he's playing at a higher level. He really has nothing left to prove in the CHL.

If Lindbom and Garand are in the ECHL/AHL, we still need 2 more goalies. Georgiev won't be back, so we need a backup at the NHL level. Then we need another guy, probably a vet, at the AHL level.

Ok that's good to know.. thanks for that info!!... ya him playing at a higher level would be the best for his development too I'd assume and since NYRs depth is a little thin next year, I would think Garand will definately be playing pro somewhere .

Very excited to see how he does in the AHL next season. Rangers have a great track record with goalies, and I think Garand has the talent to play in the NHL for a lot of years, if he refines some areas. The legendary Benoit Allaire will help him a lot.

Poor guy is never going to have a chance as a starter in NY - well at least no time remotely soon.

Ended the WJC with a .925, 1.98, didn’t lose a game (6 wins) and didn’t allow more than three in any game.

The real test is going to be the AHL this upcoming season. If he has another good season, I think what he’s done against juniors looks a lot more believable that it’ll translate to the NHL. He’s been consistently very good in junior every year and then was very good in his own age group internationally. If he plays well as a 20 year old in one of the best pro leagues in the world, then I think us Rangers fans can get excited that he’s going to be another starting caliber goaltender.

My expectation is that he will. I think he’s one of the best goalie prospects out there. One of those goalies where you check his EP page and you see a lot of .920+’s and very few below that. The ones that performed at every level and every season tend to end up being the most successful goalies in the NHL.

Very poised goalie and doesn’t crack under pressure. Reminds me of a Carey Price in this regard.

I thought Garand played pretty well at the WJC but I must say I disagree with “poised and doesn’t crack under pressure”. The McTavish line was absolutely gassed in overtime and Garand was treating the puck like a hot potato. Instead of covering and getting a change he tried several risky hand offs which led to a few immediate turnovers proceeding the McTavish miracle. He was a disaster in that situation and almost cost Canada the gold medal.

So one sequence of plays completely nullifies what he did in the 6 full games leading up to that moment? Not to mention Garand and Canada won gold regardless...

I appreciate the discourse but that kind of thinking is flawed.

Like I said, he had a good tournament. He was the best goalie in the tournament outside of Wallstedt and was very consistent.

Your comment was about his poise in moments of pressure and for me he was a disaster in the tournament’s most pressure-filled moment.

Canada won every other game by 3+ goals so there really isn’t another moment for us to judge.

I say this as a Rangers fan hoping he’s excellent. I was ripping my hair out when he made some of those decisions.

Just going off EliteProspects looks like there's 4 goalies in Hartford right now - Garand, Domingue, Lindbom and Gahagen. Might be a better post for a Rangers thread but would Garand have enough starts and ice time there? Would he end up in the ECHL?

I'm wondering if returning to Kamloops for overage year and being the guaranteed starter provides more development. Kamloops is hosting the Memorial Cup so there should be plenty of experience to be had.

Garand will beat out Lindbom. Lindbom wouldn’t have even been signed if he wasn’t a 2nd round pick. Thanks a lot Gorton for taking the 5th ranked goalie at 39 overall when Chris Drury’s nephew Jack who has developed into a legit prospect was available

Garand will back up Domingue this season, and then take over the starter role in Hartford the season after
