Totally disagree. Goaltending is one position where I don't think there's much drop off. Heck even as recently as last season we were seeing most of the leagues best point getters (7/10) and goaltenders (Rinne, Brodeaur, Thomas won their Vezinas in 30's).

Look at the age of the current NHL starters. Outside of a handful of players there's a ton of HF certified old farts manning the crease as their teams #1. Price will be like 38 when the contract ends. Rinne is 36 and still playing strong, won the Vezina at 35. Luongo is 39. Anderson is 37. Howard is 35 in a couple of days. Lundqvist, Crawford, Quick, Dubnyk, Fleury. All these guys are hovering around their mid-30's and don't look close to being usurped. Unless a career jeopardizing injury happens I can't see Price not being a Starter even at the backend of his contract.

Have you seen Lundqvist play this year? He's been usurped already, and there's reinforcements coming.

Is there a goalie prospect that's hotter than this kid right now?

Sorokin. He's the KHL playoff MVP right now.

I totally disagree. Georgiev hasn't dethroned the King. What we're seeing now is a team with nothing to gain, giving the young goalie, who will be battling Shest next training camp for a backup role, more looks. They have a pretty comparable stat line, except Henrik's played more games. Lundqvist will easily be the starter for the Rangers heading into next season. No question about it.

I was talking about how Lundqvist has played this season. He's had a similar season to an unheralded rookie, and neither has been much better than league average. When he has to face Shestyorkin for minutes, I don't suspect its going to get better. Lundqvist's role and stats keeps decreasing. Outside of a good start to the 17-18 season, he's been no better than league average the last few seasons. His game has declined, and I think he'd be gone after this season, if he didn't have a NMC.

Agreed. 2nd round would probably be about right. Primeau has done a great job at developing his skill set and has a bright future ahead of him.

From what I recall, Primeau was injured in his draft year but something to the effect that he didn't inform the club, or there was some issue that I'd have to go back to the Habs draft thread to see what was said. I do recall there was some issue with his USHL team in regards as to why his numbers were poor.

Dallas wouldve probably picked him over Oettinger

Not a chance. Oettinger is much better.

In a goalie redraft from 2017 it would likely go:

Oettinger
Tarasov/Scott
Dipietro/UPL
Primeau

He'd certainly be a climber and a big one at that and I agree with a few previous posts he probably winds up somewhere in the 2nd or 3rd round, but 2017 had a lot of great goalies come out of it. There's guys on this list like Ferguson, Zhukov, Ustimenko, Kvaca, Eriksson Ek. Truly a fantastic year for goalie prospects.

Having better numbers is not the same thing as being better. I'll take Oettinger, as well.

Primeau in his 2 years in the NCAA, both times was a finalist for the Mike Richter award for the top goalie in the NCAA, Oettinger wasn't even a finalist in any of his 3 years in the NCAA and only 1 year was he even a semi-finalist. So how could Oettinger be better then Primeau in the NCAA?

Maybe they don't play for the same team and their teams are of differing quality with different defensive systems.

That might sound crazy to Habs fans.

There's no need to try and insult Hab fans, this is a discussion about the 2 goalies.

Primeau had one of the best seasons an 18 year old has had in some time. I bet if you ask most Northeastern fans they will tell you he was the main reason they were a top 10 rated team this year. He won the Bean Pot twice, was named MVP this year, beating Oettinger both years. It's not like Northeastern is a top program compared with BU, yet Primeau was better.

Northeastern had an 18 year old Freshman on their top pairing playing on his off-side position, only 3 blueliners on the team were NHL draft picks, a 3rd, a 4th and 7th round pick. Overall the team had 5 NHL draft picks on the team, with 2 3rd round, a 4th and 2 7th round picks. This was not a stacked team, they had one guy get more then 12 goals and he had 15.

BU had 4 1st round picks on the team this year and is one of the top programs in college hockey. Oettinger is a very good goalie but Primeau was better then him these past two years which is why he's been in the running for the best goalie in the league.

BU was not good this year. They had a losing record. They didn't make the NCAA Tournament. Are you going to try to argue they were good?

You asked how Oettinger could be better. Is this some established fact that Primeau is better? What you were asking sounded like a joke. I could understand if someone disagreed with me, but I hope you were trying to exaggerate your point and weren't actually wondering how someone could think Oettinger is better.

I also think Primeau is a good goalie. We need all the good goalies we can get. Outside of Gibson, there aren't very many good American goalies. I prefer Oettinger to Primeau. I think a lot of people have unfairly written him off because he was picked in the first round and he hasn't put up video game numbers. He's played pretty well, and I think he's justified his draft position so far.

Primeau is why NU made the NCAA tournament, look at his play since he came back from the WJC's, he was great. BU had the talent to be a better team. There's a reason why he was picked each year as one of the top 5 goalies in the NCAA and it's because he played so well. His numbers are better, he's viewed as better by the people that pick the semi and finalists for the Mike Richter award, he looked better in head to head games vs Oettinger. So that's why I asked how is he better in the NCAA when Primeau has looked better, done better and had better numbers while on a team that wasn't loaded with talent.

Feels like you are arguing he's a better goalie prospect while responding to someone that's arguing Primeau had a better NCAA career.

I agree with Pavel. If I was a NHL GM I rather have Oettinger today than Primeau. Primeau had a great season and has played well but I think Oettinger has higher pro upside.

Colton Point ( Dallas 5th rounder 2016 ) had an insane NCAA career and so far it has not translated to the pros . He was basically the only reason Colgate had any chance to win games last season with his 1.74 GAA and .944 SV% in 33 games . Colgate went on quite a losing streak when his backups had to play because Point went to the World Juniors . Stars fans got really excited by him and Oettinger.

Problem is his style of goaltending has a ton of holes. When i saw him in Pre-Season for Dallas and AHL games with Texas it was painfully obvious he would need a year or two to remove some of the bigger flaws in his game before he could be an option .

So far there is no reason to believe Primeau is a better prospect than Oettinger at this point or to say Oettinger isn't worth his draft spot.

So lets not overrate or underrate players because of NCAA play.
