As per the current rules, it was the correct call. Question is whether it is time to change the rule.

They removed the 2 line offside pass. I suggest getting rid of offside all together. Use to centre line instead. No player should be allowed to be in the offensive zone while the puck is in your zone. What you do not want is a player to lurk around the opposition blueline waiting for a stretch pass from their end.

I'd also allow teams to ice the puck but after 5 icings, they get a penalty. The games needs fewer stoppages and more goals.

The trapezoid also needs to go. Let goalies play the puck. Why penalize a goalie who can play the puck better than any other goalies? Brodeur has retired. Get rid of the trapezoid.
I would love to see all of these changes. The game needs to be opened up more.

I wonder how many goals have been called back due to offside challenges where the offending player didn’t affect the play? If theyre passing the puck to the player that’s offside the linesman are probably blowing the whistle more in those situations.
This is the part that irritates me the most. There has to be some common sense. This is what ended up getting the "toe in the crease" rule scrapped, because goals were being called back where a hair of a player's skate blade was in the crease but had no impact on a goal.

I have been seeing the stats all season about Edmonton being "elite" by defensive metrics but every time I watch them they make egregious defensive mistakes.....usually just standing around watching. What gives? I'm an evidenced based guy, it's weird seeing evidence versus visual be so contrary? Maybe it's just the wrong evidence? Oilers remind me of Todd Gill. Guy could play a great game but if he ever made a single mistake, it always ended up in the back of his net.

I don’t like the idea of the penalty for 5 icings.

Yeah and while we’re it let’s start counting posts and crossbars as goals. What’s an inch or two here and there? What are these details and rules anyway?
Due to the size and weight of goalie equipment I would like to see the net a little bigger.

There is a silver lining for you.

After 3 straight losses we finally won a game we didn't deserve to because of poor play.
And Berube looks as puzzled behind the bench as Keefe. Same song and dance. They need a real coach that enforces accountability up and down the roster.

Leafs were lucky as hell. That should've been a good goal for the Oilers. I always hate that a great play leading to a good goal is wiped out because someone is 'offside' by an inch or two. Just so dumb and it takes away from the game so much when you never know if a goal is a goal anymore. If it were me I'd make it a rule that as long as you were within a few inches of the redline as the puck is going in, then that's good enough. Only players who are way offside should a goal be called back.
You either enforce the off side rule, or you abolish it. You can't pick and choose when to call it, and when not to call it.

Hopefully, at some point in the near future, AI technology will be developed to instantly call offside preventing a goal from being scored in the first place.

I would NEVER approve of a team winning the Stanley Cup by a goal being scored after an offside was not called.

JMHO.

You weren't happy with the Woll to Woll action last night? It was great. Simply a Wollderful game. Lined my Wollet because of that game.

It's interesting reading some of the EDM praise here when many of the same fans have dumped on this team when the roles were reversed. Afterall, you have to be ready from puck drop, can't win without playing the full 60, need to win the special teams battle and theres no such thing as being goalie'd.

Personally, I'm happy we got 2 points but this team hasn't really felt like it had everything together at any point this year.

Ya. So if offsides are getting discussed....

Offsides were historically used to cheat. Can't do it on goals anymore. That should be a good thing. That said, a hairline offside that didn't lead directly to a goal - seems overbearing and not in the true spirit of the rule. When you add in that folks don't like the stoppages, it can lose favour real quick.

All of that said, there needs to be a better differentiator for when an offside review is allowed to happen. If it's within a certain time frame and/or within 3 touches of the puck - it is reviewable. Otherwise, the conclusion is and should be - that it didn't impact the scoring of the goal. So, let's say - if it is greater than 15 seconds, or 3 touches (passes, etc) from the blue line being crossed, it is irrelevant to the goal being scored. Although, maybe not the passes, as those might get even harder to judge than the toe offside rule - lol... but even just the 15 or even 10 second clock would help to severely impact the number of reviews and probably cut them down to a 1/5 of what they are now.

Cuz the only thing that I hate about offside review now, is that it has taken the joy out of scoring! I never know whether to cheer or not until the puck is dropped at center ice and by then, the moment is gone. Let's be honest - if its greater than 10 seconds, it didn't directly lead to the goal getting scored anyway.

Or how about if they are offside they are offside.
Yeah.

There is no debate, get it right.

People want to let officials decide if their favorite team was almost onside on goals?

Right now it could be, "I wasn't sure it was onside, but I let it go because I know we'll get it right after review. Otherwise I'll just call close plays offside."

If you want to let close plays go, you could also call close plays offside.

Joe saved our bacon for sure, I've always had belief in him and now he's half of maybe the leagues best TANDEM

JTs line was strong mostly, certainly the Leafs best line

If only line3 had some finishing ability, line 4 has to find whatever they had again

Leafs need a top line dman more than they need a 3c, Morgan needs to reset himself cause how he's playing just ain't working. No physicality, no puck handling, no offensive instinct nor defensive acumen.
The lack of a 'Bouchard' slapshot from the point is exactly why Rielly IS NOT a #1 D-man. It also negatively compounds his defesnive deficiencies.

His 7.5 cap hit is looking more and more like a severe overpay.

JMHO.

We don’t see Edmonton very often but they’re probably going back to the SCF. They have a few brain farts but they have guys that can overcome it.
If that’s too happen Skinny needs to get dome poly filler for that five hole the size of a dartboard……

Replay is an interesting debate. Logically I want to get every call right for fairness, but then you look at how the game is called (and played) and there's more officiating errors in hockey than correct calls

4 PP combined last night and everyone watching would say there was at least double if it triple that in actual infractions. We constantly watch GI calls go to replay and get blown still. High sticking seems to be purposely miscalled often now just to get replay options.

It feels like the system isn't working well

I am not sure I see what some of you are seeing. The Leafs went up early, and Edmonton pressed back. That should have been expected. The 4th Line looked god awful, as did a couple D-Men. I thought Matthews looked good breaking up a ton of plays on McNugget.

The entire lineup was just shuffled again for the 50th time, after getting Tavares and Knies back.

I don’t like that we sit back after getting a big lead, but it worked.

Let's put the teams seasons best goal scorer, total and per game, on the third line with Holmberg, that'll show em.

If he wins the rocket he's going on the 4th line next year. He must be stopped.
At least McMann and Holmberg can keep up with him, which seems to be his biggest problem - if he doesn't get a scoring chance off the rush he has to curl and wait, and usually gets mobbed before reinforcements arrive.

With those lines he'd be on the de facto second anyway.

It was a ridiculous call, but fitting for this league. It should have been a goal.
It was offside. Sure, it needed a video review to clearly see it, however the rule MUST BE enforced.

I completely agree with that goal being called back, even if it was our Leafs that had scored it. Hopefully, future AI technology will call offside long before any goal is scored on the play.

If offside IS NOT a reason to call back a goal, then maybe a high stick causing a goal, or a player kicking the puck into the net, should be legal too.
