Morning radio said Skinner starts. I predict 3 goals allowed on the first 10 shots

I hate how this team tries to break in prospects. They don't get put in positions to succeed. Just chuck them on the fourth line and call it a day. Pure lazy

Why start Skinner? I think we've given him enough chances to run with it. Pickard has been the better goalie. Give him a chance to run with it. But I don't think any goalie would survive with our D.

Our D isn't good, but it's honestly overlooked how poor two aspects of this team are right now.

Edmonton's goaltenders have allowed 15 goals more than expected.
Edmonton's shooters have scored 13 fewer goals than expected.

That's a 28 goal swing simply with average goaltending and average finishing.

It’s pretty pathetic how badly we handicap our young players with the type of deployment and line mates that make it very hard to have any sort of success.

That being said, personally I almost wouldn’t want to play with Mcdavid and Draisaitl. So much pressure to keep up offensively and put up points but also as a young player you want, and are expected, to play the right way and be defensively responsible.

Very difficult to balance both those things, especially with players like Mcdavid and Drai who’s creative and risk taking style of play can create confusion when everyone else is trying to play within a structured system.

Mcdavid is like Jackie Moon

So then play him with RNH and Kane or something like that since they can't seem to break the habit of playing McDrai together because of one highlight reel goal while they get scored on 3 more times 5 on 5. No one gets scored on more frequently on the team than when the two are together. But man look at those McDavid numbers without Leon in terms of actual execution. That's 4th liner territory right there.

You would also be subjecting them to the oppositions best players by playing them higher in the lineup.

We used to chuck every prospect we had into the deep end and watch them drown.

So why does it work for every other team?

The issue is that we were brow beaten into this line of thinking because of the era where the rookie was playing up the lineup with other players that were also very young or rookies themself.

At this point, playing rookie with vets like RNH and Kane is exactly what good teams do to develop players. I appreciate the McDavid/Draisaitl challenge and that you wouldn't put a rookie with both of them, but I wouldn't hesitate to put one with Draisaitl and another veteran.

If our prospects need McDavid or Draisatl to look good then that’s another issue entirely. Maybe they’re just not as special as we want them to be. Wouldn’t be the first time.

So what about the rest of my post where I expanded on the point suggesting up the lineup doesn't necessarily mean with McDavid AND Draisaitl, but playing them with other quality veterans like RNH, Kane, Hyman and sometimes just one of McDrai.

Even an example from the dark years. One of the best stretches of confident hockey we saw from Yakupov was once they had him start playing with Derek Roy, granted it didn't last forever and they did still get scored on a lot, but so did everyone that year. Sometimes the younger players can really benefit from playing some time with a veteran forward that has scored regularly in the NHL before. Guys like Hamblin, Erne, Janmark or even Derek Ryan aren't that.

If I recall in the last 5 years only Yammo and Jesse got the push to play with Drai or McDavid.

Before that they tried Yak and he was great with McDavid but then got hurt and then dumped down the line.

Yak also had a decent run with Roy albeit they did get scored on a little too much.

Yup, this was well covered in the game thread. Comedy of errors culminating in fifth goal in which the Oil execute their system but all players freeze in passivity to act to prevent a blue paint goal from happening. The other takeaway is that Broberg is clearly a trade chip, not a roster player, given his benching for a series of mistakes that included Ceci and McLeod. Most egregious was Ceci's errors that began at passive blue line zone entry to missing his back-door responsibility on the Canes player who scored.

When games start at 6-7pm it only allows me to wallow in "wtf land" for a couple hours after the game before I switch my brain to whatever I need to do before bed..4 pm games leave about 4 hours ..really long day..noon is going to end up being a full 8 hour shift.

Somehow you just know Bettman and his cronies are behind these mind games.

And both of them had some prolonged stretches of really good hockey. The Yamo/Drai/RNH was the best line in the league for nearly a half season. JP started very well in 2021 with McDavid and whichever 3rd player they lined up with the two of them as well, before the coaches gave up on it after he got Covid and started to struggle from there on out and never fully recovered as an Oiler and Woody for whatever reason never trusted JP whatsoever like his past boss TMac.

People love to bitch about Puljujarvi's production, but over the last three seasons, there is no other forward that McDavid had a higher goal scoring share with amongst teammates he played more than 100 minutes with. They didn't have high goal scoring rates, but they have terrific rates at preventing goals against and ultimately isn't that what matters most.... outscoring your opposition Who cares if it's only 2-1, would rather that than lose 4-3.
