Boyle gets far too much crap here, he normally starts in the defensive zone and has been playing with scrub wingers way too often for him to put up any points, one of the only times our PP was successful this year was with him on it standing in front of the net... plus this guy comes to play in the playoffs. If they could play with him players who can create offense he can put up some points, he isn't going to create too many goals but he can score some garbage goals, win faceoffs, be physical, and will stick up for teammates (just wish he would take some boxing lessons this summer, he can't fight his way out of a wet paper bag).

I thought Lapierre would be here for sure, guess they preferred Moore, I am fine with that. I really feel we will make one more move for a top 6-9 winger, plus Sather always gets a goon each year (Asham, Haley, Boogard RIP, Brashear, etc).

I agree.

Boyle is never going to play with high profile wingers, but he hasn't exactly played with even just average ones. I think he would be pretty good with Dorsett on his line. Not sure who the other winger will be yet, but Dorsett can create a little offense and he is going to wear opponents down which will help Boyle's cycle game.

Would be more likely we'd get a goon if there were any on the FA market to begin with.

There aren't.

so they will make more moves but right now alot of 1 way contracts

Nash, Stepan, Callahan
Hagelin, Richards, Zuccarello
Boyle, Brassard, Dorsett
Pyatt, Moore, Asham
Powe, Haley

technically Kreider is not a 1 way but likely on team

The bold have been waived.
Don't see pyatt here
Zuc is a definite maybe based on constraints as we hold on to BRichards and must re-sign our guys.

I see Miller making this team, and they're not wasting his second yr ELC like Torts did with Kreider.
Lindberg makes this team,
Fast pushes as does Yogan; will depend on who is here and who gets traded.

Yes they have been waived but went unclaimed so they are still Rangers. They arent off the team.

I guess right now I'd put out

Hagelin-Brassard-Nash
Kreider-Stepan-Callahan
Boyle-Richards-Zuccarello
Mashinter-Moore-Dorsett

It just lacks....oomph. We desperately need a legit top 6 LW to slot Kreider/Hagelin down.

Maybe Linberg/Miller can shake things up, and Boyle can get pushed down and Mashinter out, but I'm not even sure I want that because Richards and Zuccarello really need size on their wing and Mashinter isn't ideal but I think this team as a whole needs a mall cop.

Few things:

I thought Edmonton had a couple nice pickups in Ference and Gordon to help fill out that roster more. Adds to their defensive game.

Horton got paid too much by CBJ. Too many concussions in the past. Too long of a term on that contract.

Clowe's contract is straight up stupid. And Clarkson's is straight up asinine.

I'm not quite sure how PIT can afford Scuderi at that cap hit. Blows my mind. I guess they aren't paying any other defenders besides him, Orpik, and Letang.

Predators did a helluva job retooling their bottom 6.

Missed the Dallas/Boston trade yesterday. That's just a crazy trade but a very even one in my opinion.

At the risk of giving multiple people a heart attack, I fully agree with the poster on all these points.

This is a shoe that's been waiting to drop for the longest.
He's NHL calibre, exceptional talent in reflexes, but not the skill to date to master that talent and control them.

Now that they've ditched Horcroff's cap $, Oil is a possible landing spot, relatively cheap cap dump.

Edmonton just signed Labarbera to back up Dubnyk. They have 9 mil in cap space and still have to sign 4 more players, including Gagner and MPS. Gagner will get a raise on the 3.2 mil he made last year.

Bylsma has already endorsed Fleury as the #1 goalie. After him, they have Vokoun and that's it. Vokoun is 37. They aren't going to trade Fleury until they have a replacement for him.

Tawnos, do you mock Sather's ability to acquire a goon? :sarcasm:

Just because no one is available via free agency, he may do something crazy like sign Steve McKenna out of retirement just cause!

Seriously though, I fear he could make a trade for a goon, but I would be quite content if this is the first year we don't sign one.

I don't see anything we can do about it now, short of trading defense for offense. I think we are just better off going with what we have, seeing what we need, and adding at the deadline.

Forgot the recent Labarbera signing.
I stand corrected.

It might be how it eventually works out, but I agree MAF to EO not happening quickly, if at all.

I seriously think this team could be out of it by the deadline. They have no offense and they're soft. How they managed to pull off that generally at odds combo is beyond me.

Well, I'm relatively sure that this year's version of him getting a goon is Haley's contract turning from a two-way deal to a one-way deal. I expect to see Haley a fair amount this year, especially if Asham is moved out.

The problem with Boyle is he's not creative. Much more the shooter than the passer. He occasionally uses his size and reach to go all the way. He's also decent on the pwp setting up in front of the other team's net. Anyway it's not the wingers he plays with so much as he's not good at setting them up. Other aspects of the game he's very good at and he's good in the playoffs which is really important. But to me your bottom 6 guys should produce enough to keep other team's honest. There needs to be some production. Most of them should penalty kill--a couple of them anyway should be able to fight reasonably well. They all should be good boards players and defensively responsible. Boyle covers a lot of those areas--but not all--pretty well.

That is possible, but Asham is very well respected in the locker room, remember no Cally and Hags to start the season, hopefully Staal will be ready, but even that is unknown. Which Brad Richards is going to show up? I could see Asham sticking around for his locker room presence, but maybe they waive him in September and another team picks him up. He has an underrated shot and when healthy, he was a serviceable 4th liner for us.

I think you underestimate the roster, or overestimate other teams. We have a lot of good pieces. This is basically the same team that made it to the 2nd round last year.

One of Paul Martin or Marc Andre Fleury will have to go, they have 676,667 in cap space at the moment. They must have a trade in the works, figured they would have used a compliance buyout on Paul Martin as he is vastly overpaid.

I heard from NHL Network Radio that an article was published in a Pittsburgh paper that the Penguins organization felt Paul Martin was better than Letang. Letang took it hard, which is why it took him so long to sign his extension. So I don't think Paul Martin is going anywhere...

They only have 11 forwards under contract, 7 forwards, and 2 goalies. What I Shero thinking? Holmgren in Philly isn't much better as he is over the cap, but he at least has 6 mil coming off the books when the season starts since Pronger will be on LTIR (although, he should just retire at this point).

Devils only have 3 mil in cap space left, they used up their space fast! lol

Boyle had a rough year and Torts ran him ragged with defensive zone starts which hopefully can be relived slightly by Moore. I still think Brian Boyle can give you 10-12 goals.
