Get used to bad free agent classes getting overpaid from now on. These 8 year deals that can only be offered by home teams is keeping all the star players where they were drafted, which is exactly what the league wanted. The downside to this is that teams become even more desperate with less FA options available so guys like Clarkson and Clowe get to cash in much bigger than they should have. Clarkson is just the beginning. Best to buy low (a la Weiss) or avoid FA all together from now on. This is a joke. There should be more trades as a result of the FA market being so pitifully weak and overpriced.

This logic doesn't work.

It will sort itself out in another couple seasons as teams are more frequently closer to the cap.

We need a top 6 scorer. If we do not address scoring on our LW, we might have a problem.

Damien Brunner? Yeah, he's a RW, but we can roll Nash-Stepan-Brunner as our 1st line. Brunner works better with players who generate their own offense.

We'd need to move somebody out or have an RFA take a pay cut though.

No one interests me in this years FA. We need to make a trade some how.. Maybe Jamie Benn for MDZ & Boyle or something like that. But idk we need scoring desperately. If Kreider could step up we should be fine but I dont think he makes that step just yet.

Can't see the Stars moving Benn. He's going to play with Seguin.

Might as well see if we can get jagr cheap on a one year deal. Would be great on the third line despite his speed is still real strong on the puck.

Brunner is a 3rd liner. Setoguchi is a border line 2nd/3rd liner.

We need a legit 2nd liner capable of 25 goals.

We need more than Nash and callahan to svore 20+ goals.

Jagr and Iginla have not been part of the initial signings. I think you might be able to get Jagr on a cheap one year contract.

I honestly think with the signing of moore, boyle is a goner. i can def see him and mdz packaged to Vancouver for alex elder or boyle going straight up for bieska and mdz being traded for a legit 2nd liner

Possibly, but later rather than sooner though.

Boyle is a tough forward with great size. He has scored for us in stretches. I am sure that Boyle also is a big part of the room. A well liked guy.

We have toughness issues. Boyle could work out well for us in a 4th line winger role with Dorsett on the other side and McIlrath on D.

If not, we can move him along the way.

Still a force to be reckoned with on the power play, as well. Defenders have killed the Rangers on the power play by pressing them. They still back right off when JJ has the puck.

I may be the only devils fan to say..Congrats for making the right moves today. You guys have a good team for years ahead. Didn't make any dumb moves or overpay for anyone. Can't wait till October!

so how close are we gonna be to the cap after we resign our RFA?

Is it really that close ?

We don't have room for another 2M signing ?

It depends on how many years our RFAs sign for. The more years, the higher the AAV.

The Giroux contract is a good measurable for Stepan. Giroux had 150 points in 206 games, then signed a 3 year deal @ 3.75 mil per year. The first 2 years of that deal paid him 2.75 mil and 3.5 mil. He was coming off a 76 point, 82 game season.

Stepan has 140 points in 212 games. He's coming off a 44 point, 48 game season. Sather likes to give out 2 year bridge deals to non-arbitration eligible RFAs.

The salary cap in the first year of Giroux's contract was 64.3 mil, same as it is next year. So Stepan is likely to get a very similar contract, though perhaps a little less since his numbers aren't quite as good, his breakout season was only 48 games, and he didn't maintain those numbers in the playoffs.

So I'm thinking somewhere in the neighborhood 2 years, 5.75 mil for Stepan (2.875 AAV). If Sather decides to give him more than 2 years, obviously the AAV will be higher.

McD is almost guaranteed to get at least 4 mil per year. He's arbitration eligible, so Sather is more likely to give him a longer term contract. He has 3 years until UFA, so Sather will sign him to a 4 or 5 year deal, most likely. Probably somewhere around 4.5 per year.

Hagelin is harder to predict. He's arbitration eligible, but will probably only get a 2 year deal and won't get as much as Stepan. Probably somewhere around 2.25 mil per year is my guess.

Zucc will get somewhere between 1 and 1.5 mil per year. Let's say 1.375 mil AAV.

Falk won't get much of a raise, if any. Call it 1 mil.

Add them all up and you get 12 mil.

One of Asham or Powe won't be on the team. Let's say worst case scenario, we have to bury Powe in Hartford. Here's what our lineup would look like:

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled with the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $62,981,667; BONUSES: $762,500
CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $2,080,833

We have 2 mil left in cap space, but we need to leave at least 500k for injury replacements and deadline deals. And that is also using the bonus cushion. So really, we have maybe 800k to spend, unless we want to risk having the bonuses roll over into the next year's cap. If it isn't likely that those bonuses will be earned, then maybe they can spend up to 1.5 mil.

Either way, it's not much, and that's with Stepan getting a 2 year bridge deal rather than 5+ years. And it's only a 22 man roster. At least one of the kids will make the team as both Hags and Cally may not be ready to start the season.

This is why the decision to not buy out Richards is so frustrating to me. We could much more easily lock up Stepan long term and save ourselves some cap space down the road. We could have added another top 9 forward, maybe two, on a short term deal.

For all of our sakes, I hope Richards plays well and stays healthy.

we don't even have $4 million to spend. I think he signs between $3-3.5 either way.

Give him 3M then. I just want to see him back on the Rangers for my own personal selfish reasons
