And he still lands Fox. And Miller. And Kravtsov. And Lundkvist. And Chytil. And likely still has the rest of the 2018, 2019 and 2020 draft classes.

I mean look, there’s no getting around Lafreniere and Kakko being game changers. But let’s not act like we’re Edmonton without their top 10 picks.

at what price? he'd be good depth but I think he was overpaid on this last deal...

We are pretty stacked on the wings so Fast is not the biggest loss, but our depth takes a huge hit if Kakko, Lemieux and Gauthier dont take big steps and Laf and Kravstov have rookie struggles.

Because on paper and if all goes well Panarin, Kreider, Buchnevich, Kakko, Laf, Lemieux, Kravstov and Gauthier is one of the best wing group in the league.

long term we have lots of depth on the wings...less confident in the RW depth this coming season though since you'd be asking multiple kids to move up the lineup. I'm 100% good with giving Kakko and Gauthier that opportunity but would also not hate to have some veteran depth insurance in case either struggles/isn't ready. but you could potentially get someone on a 1 year deal for that rather than 3 for fast.

Ok - do you really think the Leafs are trading Dermott for like Howden and a 3rd? Would you? The Rangers don’t have a 2nd. What level of player are you drawing the line at in a Dermott trade. Where is the incentive for Toronto?

In 2 years we have Zibanejad UFA, Fox RFA, and Kakko RFA. I'm not gonna fault Gorton for wanting some pretty clear books when that time comes. Unless we are getting someone that we see as an important piece to the big future of the franchise, I don't see why we would give a 3+ year deal.

Also, Fast is older and Carolina is more set up for near term success then us, similar offers could easily lean in favor of Carolina in his mind

I’m sorry but I am not buying this. 3yr/6m is basically half of what an average cap slot is.

to make it round numbers let’s say 80m cap for 20 players. That’s 4m a player. Fast is literally making half that. Those are the contracts that you need to afford bigger raises. These are contributors that are on bargain contracts that don’t hurt you team. Those are gold in a salary cap era.
